I was writing about her as a music reviewer way back in 1959. I've talked to many people who worked with her and knew her beyond that and have concluded the hip kitty image she had and reputation for drug use, drinking and largely being out of it was something of her own making, the clue being her autobiography "Lady Sings the Blues" where that legend-building clearly was a choice. She was very much in control of her music and persona and a peerless, always elegant performer before audiences.

Just one of a long series or remarkable recordings she did for Columbia, every one of them now a historic jewel. She was the best at coming in on a song like she was sliding in from Mars and to Hell with the downbeat. She phrases ahead of the beat, behind the beat and almost never on the beat. She was simply a genius and she always meant every word she'd sung as if she'd lived it.

I disagree--Frances is good but she's no match for Billie's raw genius--exhilaration and melancholy wrapped up in that inimitable sound and phrasing. No wonder she continues to inspire singers even today.
