you can prove this to yourself if you doubt by taking your cellphone camera out and grabbing any object in the center of your vision. while keeping the object in focus (from doubling) move the object closer to your nose. on camera you will see that as your are focusing on the object (wich doubles the background), your eyes are crossing. patients who are nearsighted are having problems straightening thier eyes and making them parallel.
some people with nearsighted or farsighted. its most likely happening to older people because eye muscles become weaker as you grow older.your eyes can also not focus anything closer than 6 inches away (such as text) regardless if you have 20/20 vision or not.
the human eye can only do two things, look at objects at a distance or look at objects up close. if you put your hand or finger in front of you, you will notice its normal that you can only view the background or the hand, not both at the same time (unless you get your hand close to the background). your eyes cross in order to remove double vision on objects up close in the center of your vision. i believe this is musculatur related. simple eye crossing excersizes may help strengthen some.
I believe your seeing muscle problems, not vision problems with your patients. the patients that are farsighted (can only see objects at a distance) will you please check for me. they should be unable to cross thier eyes. when a patient who is nearsighted check thier eyes, they should look like thier eyes are permanently crossed. people cross thier eyes in order to remove ghosting of objects directly in front of them (in the center of vision).
My eye docter just told me I have myopia.

thiers a reason nature lets you do things like cross your eyes, its not simply for looks.your nose also helps reduce double vision up close.
