I think you are mistaken about the etymology of the word Kangaroo. It comes from the Guugu Yimidhirr word gangurru. The aborigines weren't so stupid they didn't know the name of one of the most common animals around! In 1820, Captain Phillip K. King used the word mee-nuah, derived from the local word minha, meaning edible meat, to refer to kangaroos. This started the myth that Captain Cook had wrongly used a word meaning "I don't know".
