i think theres only 2 tanks that can truly surpass the king tiger even today, its the Leopard and the M1A2 Abrahams not too sure about the T90 plus the king tiger is still 1 of the most powerful tank in history
@willy1315 No friendby April 1945 there were at least 3 US Tanks tath surpassed the Kintifer and by 1946 the Centurion. Its engine, track system and drivetrain was already obsolete,
The 88 mm Gun was origanally an anti aircraft gun. It was put on to a tank body in 1942. What is more interesting is the fact that it was set to 88 mm because the number 8 and the letter H is the 8th number of the alphabet. So 88 is HH, you see HH is an abbreviation for Heil Hitler, so every time that 88 mm gun is firing, it is blasting out HEIL HITLER. The Germans called the Sherman Tank Tommy brewups, because all they needed was one shell hit anywhere on the Sheman and it would blow up.
No you thought wrong. Wittmann was indeed one of the best tank commanders of all time, but he wasn't the best overall. There were some other tiger aces who scored higher tank kills than Wittmann. for example Otto Carius (150 kills) Johannes Bolter (139 kills) Kurt Knispel (168 kills) and on 4th place comes Wittmann with 138 kills.
In total there were 12 Tiger aces credited with more than 100 tank kills...
Yes, but it was not a matter of 1 x quantity vs 1 x quality. It was more like 3 x quanitity vs 1 x quality.
Don't forget the King Tigers fought on two fronts at the same time (East and West) while the mass produced Shermans, T34s, Cromwells etc. could concentrate their full power strenght on only one front.
However, I'm sure if Germany had only fought against Russia or the USA alone in an 1 vs 1 match, maybe then even quality could have won over quantity!
I guess we should be thankful that it wasnt that way, the Germans had a excellent military and the most badass shit around, but this world would suck if they had won, half the world would be under the control of Nazi Germany.

@snyp0r65 - Nazi Germany didn't have the industrial capacity to keep up with American industrial might, not even in their wildest dreams. Tank per tank, plane per plane, ship per ship, gun vs gun, etc., they never had the industrial capacity to keep up with America alone and then when we add Canada in too, along with England, the comparison isn't even on the same planet. Nazi Germany lost WWII before the first shot was fired. They never had enough of *anything*, even at the beginning of WWII.
@gonefishingwithjw thank you. But it doesn matter what song i choose because none of youtube library's music has anything got to do with WW2 or the King Tiger, SADLY! sorrry but you have to deal with it... I wish i could find some better music for this video.

@dunnobutwayne - Which is why it broke down so much with engine and transmission problems. Just to get this thing moving required redlining the engine, as the engine was so underpowered and overstressed.
@becurious1977 But then again, not ALL variants of the M4 shermans were able to kill the King Tiger! Look up at 3:13. You have to consider that only the upgraded Shermans (with the long 76mm gun) could penetrate the King Tiger's side and rear armor. But there were still many outdated Sherman variants during 1944/45 with the short 75mm guns which were ineffective. So this strategy worked not always.

@becurious1977 The KT was not an efficient tank, most of them had many defects so that many KT tanks had to be left alone on battlefield, best german tanks were Panther and Tiger

@becurious1977 - As the above poster, (AirDB23), correctly pointed out, the King Tiger had many serious mechanical defects which led to very poor reliability. As the book, "Tigers in Combat", documents, most of these tanks never even saw combat because they were broken down so often. A very poor tank with serious engine, transmission, steering gear and fuel leak problems. The engine was so underpowered and overstressed that it had to be red-lined just to get this thing moving. Not good.

Son if you dont like the King Tiger then fuck off somewhere else. WE DONT WANT YOU HERE.
best armored/most potent (88mm HV cannon), tank of the war:::however it had difficult logistical problems (3 gal per mile!), no transport, very poor automotive characteristics, poor reliability (esp the front drive/torquedrive sprocket), and sluggish field performance due to wieght, it was easily outmaenuevered by lighter allied tanks for the thiinner sides/back. excellent tank though, and the "fear factor' was the best!

@adampie12 - The book, "Tigers in Combat"., documents that the King Tiger tank was so plagued with serious mechanical issues that most of them never saw combat. It might be that immediately predisposes it to not making the, "excellent tank", category.
@Echeque5 It's just a book, one of thousand others. If you want to analyse you have to read more than only one book! I've read quite a bit of literature on World War II and most of the literature I have read, depict the opposite of what you said.

@gunmetalxXx - I've studied history and WWII in particular for over 40 years. I have over 3,000 books in my library and any of them that covers German tanks of WWII mentions that poor reliability of the Tiger tank and the atrocious reliability of the King Tiger tank. Let's be brave and accurate enough to call a spade, a spade. The King Tiger tank was so unreliable it makes the rolling piece of junk list. We have to face facts and not fantasy. Doesn't matter what a tanked *looked* like.
ok ok, surely you read 3000 books and studied for 40 years. So you surely know as well, that Germany hat and will ever have the best tanks and military techniques. Look at the numbers how fucking powerfull the Tiger and Kingtiger was. Look how many tanks a Tiger destroyed, before being destroyed. The fucking sheran is a peace of shit. Look what the KT and Tiger done at the eastern front, LOOK at the NUMBERS: FACE THE TRUTH, the NUMBERS DOn'T lie, it is a killing machine.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@mathiehesse - No, the numbers don't lie as stated in the book, "Tigers in Combat", that most King Tiger tanks never even saw combat because they were crippled with mechanical failures and were often broken down. The tank video game, "Company of Hero's", is not a historical resource.
your changing the facts: Most of the Kingtiger weren destory by enemies, they were destroyed by their own crew. For 1 KT/Tiger at least 5 allied tanks had been destroed. That are facts. Compare the numbers.
look at the heavy tank companys: Tank company with only 14 tanks fucked 1400 allied tanks.
ture! And don't forget that many KTs were also abandoned for lack of fuel even though fully functional engines. best examle is Kampfgruppe Peiper which had to leave 17 fully functional King Tigers only because they had no fuel anymore!
Kampfgruppe Peiper was part of the 501st Abteilung. And that's why the 501st has a very bad kill to loss ratio because not all losses were killed by the enemy but also by the germans themselves.
Your just incarning the stereotyp of an american: Stupidy, without any idea about history, thinking ur the centre of the universe, only speaking 1 language and for sure never leaving the borders of your own country. Btw: 40%of the americans have german roots.
@mathiehesse 107 was over 1/5 of all mad.e 1400 about 1/1000 of allied tanks. I have been to all the Earth's inhabitied continenst and will be in Berlin Next month to commemorate V-E Day 65 years on
did you know that even if a sherman shot a tiger from a 100meters the round would just bounce of. the tiger 2 could take out tanks from nearly two miles away.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Joshx2iPac - "In combat", which is the keyword here. If a tank doesn't even make it into combat because of serious mechanical issues, that is the most glaring weakness of all.
@Joshx2iPac All tanks during WW2 had the exact same wekness, not only Tigers. It is well known that all tanks were best protected at the front, therefore thinner at the side/rear. Anyway, the Tiger's rear armor (80mm) was even thicker than most of the Allied tank's frontal armor! And It was hard to be prenetated for many guns used by medium tanks. Only the new-designed T34-85 and the uparmed shermans with the long 76mm guns could do this.
@gunmetalxXx - The history shows that the American Sherman tank and the Russian T-34 were far more reliable than the Tiger tanks. Tanks being designed and manufactured by different people, from different countries are not all going to have the same weaknesses. There is no excuse for the Tiger tanks well known and documented mechanical breakdowns. Too much armor plating was one of the very reasons the Tiger tanks broke down so often with engine, transmission and steering gear failures. Sorry.
As well as history shows that the American Sherman and Russian T-34 were hopeless inferior against the German Tiger when facing it on the real battlefield due to lesser firepower and armor protection. They had only better mobility and speed, but this could not help to survive a direct hit by a 88mm round. But I were never comparing the Tiger with allied tanks in terms of mobility and speed because I know the Tiger was a heavy tank and not as fast as medium tanks. (obviously)
We can repeat ourselves every time again and again, but this discussion won't stop by this.
The Tiger had some psotive parts as well as negative. OK, if you like you can keep talking about the Tiger's unreliability - but i will always keep remembering you of the effective kill statistics on the battlefields - thanks to great armour and a powerful gun.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@gunmetalxXx - Which all means nothing if a tank is unreliable. Let's not forget, the evil Nazi Germany LOST WWII and their unreliable tanks were one reason why.
What? It means nothing? Only that the Russians lost over 80,000 AFVs during WW2 and you say it's nothing? LOL! In fact, most german tanks were very reliable like the Panther, Panzer IV, Stug and Panzer III which combined good speed, mobility and fire power. Only the heavier 50-60 ton-class Tiger/King Tiger/Jagdtiger were unreliable. But there were only 2,000 Tigers compared to over 6,000 Panthers, 8,800 Panzer IVs and 9,400 Stug IIIs!
@Echeque5 - Tigerphobia had nothing to do with propaganda. Just watch all the vids on YT, documentaries on TV, and listen to the words of veterans, which had to fight against the Tiger in WWII. And no tank had a break-down-rate of 99%, not even the crappy T34, which broke down by the thousands and was shot to pieces in horrenduous numbers, but there were always enough left to win the war, because quantity is also some sort of a quality
Anyone of you can see & touch a King Tiger en Axvall. Faaaar superior no anything actually. Russian archives TODAY can explain all about scared T34's crew.
the king tiger had the best gun in ww2, its shells could penetrate 150mm of armor from 2,200 metres thts nearly 2 miles!, the tiger 2 failed because its engine was under powered so it broke, it had 180mm thick armor but unfortunatly it was made of cheap metal due to low resources. even with these drawbacks it could still defeat the m26 pershing and the IS tank series with no problem. if this tank was mass produced and made of better materials and powerful engines it would be unstoppable.
@rocknrollmetal93 - The allies had air superiority over Europe, which meant German tanks were hunted by fighter bombers and blown up left and right. No German tank would have made any difference in WWII if for nothing more than this reason alone.
@rocknrollmetal93 - Oh stop it! lol Everyone knows the Tiger tank was invincible! It could travel at 100 mph, shoot enemy tanks from 50 miles away, drive on top of the water and cross oceans, had a never-ending supply of ammunition, never needed to be refueled and never, ever broke down! All the history books are telling lies! Nazi Germany actually won WWII! lol I am kidding of course! LOL Just trying to highlight the absurd by being absurd. The Tiger broke down a lot and was very unreliable.
dude im not saying its invincible. lol. but it was a lot better on then any other tank, it knock any other tank in one shot, its shells like i said before could penetrate 150mm of armor from 2miles away. allied tanks couldnt even fire from a mile away

@ltshiro - I'll have to call you out on that one. Look up a video on here using Keywords - Sherman vs Tiger and you will learn that 5 Sherman tanks, (or less), could take out 1 Tiger tank. Let's not build this thing up to more than it really was, please. Historical accuracy is important.
The Tiger I's design used vertical armour so it could be defeated by all Sherman versions. But the King Tiger used sloped armour on all sides which means that not all Sherman variants were able to defeat it. Only the upgunned M4A1 or M4A3E8 Sherman with the long 76mm M3 gun was able to penetrate the 80mm thick and 30° sloped side armour at 800-500 meters distance. But the old 75mm M3 gun which was still used by the most Sherman variants in 1944 could not penetrate any armour of the KT.
@ltshiro "At will"? How so? The Sherman Firefly's would destroy Tiger tanks too, so it wasn't, "at will". The Tiger tank commanders had to be very wary of the Sherman Firefly's, or merely a numerically superior number of standard Sherman tanks.
@ltshiro - This tank is a King Tiger tank, not a Tiger tank. Two different tanks entirely. The King Tiger was plagued with serious reliability issues that were so bad that the book, "Tigers in Combat", points out that most of them never saw combat, as they were broken down so often. Kill ratio's aren't the only thing to look at in historically evaluating a tank. If there were 10,000 King Tiger tanks made and 9,999 broke down, only 1 made it to the battlefield and destroyed 100 much smaller...
@ltshiro ...Russian T-34 tanks before it was finally destroyed, that would give this tank a 100 to 1 kill ratio. But would that mean it's a good tank? Of course not.

@rocknrollmetal93 - The historical record proves that the Tiger tank was far less reliable than any allied tanks. Let's not forget, the evil Nazi Germany lost WWII and their tanks breaking down with regularity was one of the reasons why.
Echeque5 I think everybody is well informed about the weak engine. BUT,not all King Tigers broke down, if so, they would never have reached the battle front. How can the King Tiger have a combat history if they broke always down? That makes no sense, right?
According to Tiger Unit Histories, on 27 December 1944, Heavy tank battalion 501 received 35 King Tigers of which 26 were still operational.
SS-PzAbtl 501 received 45 King Tigers of which 30 reached the front without breakdowns.

@gunmetalxXx - Most younger people are not informed about this tank at all. They see a silly 1 minute video on YouTube about it and they, "Wow man, that is one cool looking tank! What a beast!", and then go on to say how, "indestructible", it was and all other manner of unadulterated BS.
Well, people just say what they think about this tank. If they say it's a cool looking tank then i think it is the truth and you shoould respect it. For me and most other people the King Tiger loos very "cool" indeed! But i think that's just a sense of taste, everyone has a different opinion about this. Overall i think only a very few people don't agree with the point that it looks damn cool. And hell yes, the King Tiger WAS A DAMN BEAST! 68 TONNES! it was a MONSTER ON WHEELS! - fact!
of its very good armour protection that safed the crew inside the tank plus of its very powerful main gun that could destroy any enemy tanks at 2 miles away!
This is the official version that most people know about. Of course we should not forget about the negative parts like its overheavy weight and engine/transmission failures which caused technical failures. But i think overall you make a bad balanced picture of it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@gunmetalxXx - Not too many scenarios on the Western Front where a tank with a gun that had a 2 mile range was much of a benefit. Most King Tiger's never even saw battle as they were so incredibly unreliable. Yeah, that's a pretty bad picture and the truth.
Many of them have seen combat at two battlefronts during 1944-1945 while serving in 8 Heavy Tank Battalions - documented Fact. And they scored very high tank kills and caused very high enemy losses - Fact. Even though it was so much unreliable, it still caused such a huge amount of damage to the enemy forces - Fact! Now just imagine what it would be like if they had a better engine. Alright, You would speak german now!
@gunmetalxXx - Speak German now? That's impossible. The King Tiger tank not only was extremely unreliable, but it also guzzled fuel when fuel was in short supply. When the huge amount of resources that were used just to make one King Tiger, along with the very great expense, are also factored in, this tank hastened Nazi Germany's defeat.Further, Nazi Germany could only dream of the industrial capacity of America and as such, never had enough of anything and this is the primary reason they lost.
@Echeque5 Most of these were not abandoned because of mechanical problems, but because there was no fuel anymore. don't forget, Germany was having difficult times supplying the front lines with fuel. Why do you think the US captured so many largely intact without any mechanical damage? Because tank crews simply ran out of fuel and had to walk back. german tanks were gas guzzlers at a time when germany was very short on fuel, this had to have an impact on thos captured tank figures.

@rocknrollmetal93 - Dude, the best gun and armor in the history of the world would mean absolutely zilch when the engine, transmission and steering gear broke down with regularity. Add the well know fuel leaks and fires to the picture and it was far from the best tank.
@Echeque5 No, you stop it. lol Everyone knows allied aircrafts were invisible, they could fly at 100,000 mph faster than light speed, bombed tanks from 50 miles away, flew under the ground so they could not be shot down, never needed to be refueled bycause they used Electric motors (engine), plus they had infinite ammunition and bombs.

What about Wittmann? i thought he was the most successful Tiger tank ace of ww2
GermanSniper666 2 years ago
No you thought wrong. Wittmann was indeed one of the best tank commanders of all time, but he wasn't the best overall. There were some other tiger aces who scored higher tank kills than Wittmann. for example Otto Carius (150 kills) Johannes Bolter (139 kills) Kurt Knispel (168 kills) and on 4th place comes Wittmann with 138 kills.
In total there were 12 Tiger aces credited with more than 100 tank kills...

The Germans must ahve been pissed that "Quantity" beat "Quality"
Im surprised that the King Tigers could be destroyed AT ALL.
TheChaosUndivided 2 years ago 2

An unknow US general said on the KT
If you encounter a KT on the battlefield do the following. Find an excuse and get the hell away
becurious1977 2 years ago
@becurious1977 But then again, not ALL variants of the M4 shermans were able to kill the King Tiger! Look up at 3:13. You have to consider that only the upgraded Shermans (with the long 76mm gun) could penetrate the King Tiger's side and rear armor. But there were still many outdated Sherman variants during 1944/45 with the short 75mm guns which were ineffective. So this strategy worked not always.

Let's be brave and accurate enough to call a spade, a spade. The King Tiger tank was so unreliable it makes the rolling piece of junk list. We have to face facts and not fantasy. Doesn't matter what a tanked *looked* like.

Echeque5 2 years ago
your changing the facts: Most of the Kingtiger weren destory by enemies, they were destroyed by their own crew. For 1 KT/Tiger at least 5 allied tanks had been destroed. That are facts. Compare the numbers.
look at the heavy tank companys: Tank company with only 14 tanks fucked 1400 allied tanks.
mathiehesse 2 years ago

@Joshx2iPac - The main weakness of the Tiger was its well known reliability issues. It was not a dependable piece of equipment.
Echeque5 2 years ago
@Joshx2iPac All tanks during WW2 had the exact same wekness, not only Tigers. It is well known that all tanks were best protected at the front, therefore thinner at the side/rear. Anyway, the Tiger's rear armor (80mm) was even thicker than most of the Allied tank's frontal armor! And It was hard to be prenetated for many guns used by medium tanks. Only the new-designed T34-85 and the uparmed shermans with the long 76mm guns could do this.
gunmetalxXx 2 years ago
@gunmetalxXx - The history shows that the American Sherman tank and the Russian T-34 were far more reliable than the Tiger tanks. Tanks being designed and manufactured by different people, from different countries are not all going to have the same weaknesses. There is no excuse for the Tiger tanks well known and documented mechanical breakdowns. Too much armor plating was one of the very reasons the Tiger tanks broke down so often with engine, transmission and steering gear failures. Sorry.
Echeque5 2 years ago
As well as history shows that the American Sherman and Russian T-34 were hopeless inferior against the German Tiger when facing it on the real battlefield due to lesser firepower and armor protection. They had only better mobility and speed, but this could not help to survive a direct hit by a 88mm round. But I were never comparing the Tiger with allied tanks in terms of mobility and speed because I know the Tiger was a heavy tank and not as fast as medium tanks. (obviously)
gunmetalxXx 2 years ago
We can repeat ourselves every time again and again, but this discussion won't stop by this.
The Tiger had some psotive parts as well as negative. OK, if you like you can keep talking about the Tiger's unreliability - but i will always keep remembering you of the effective kill statistics on the battlefields - thanks to great armour and a powerful gun.

Echeque5 2 years ago
But there were only 2,000 Tigers compared to over 6,000 Panthers, 8,800 Panzer IVs and 9,400 Stug IIIs!

the king tiger had the best gun in ww2, its shells could penetrate 150mm of armor from 2,200 metres thts nearly 2 miles!, the tiger 2 failed because its engine was under powered so it broke, it had 180mm thick armor but unfortunatly it was made of cheap metal due to low resources. even with these drawbacks it could still defeat the m26 pershing and the IS tank series with no problem. if this tank was mass produced and made of better materials and powerful engines it would be unstoppable.
rocknrollmetal93 2 years ago

Echeque5 2 years ago
The Tiger I's design used vertical armour so it could be defeated by all Sherman versions. But the King Tiger used sloped armour on all sides which means that not all Sherman variants were able to defeat it. Only the upgunned M4A1 or M4A3E8 Sherman with the long 76mm M3 gun was able to penetrate the 80mm thick and 30° sloped side armour at 800-500 meters distance. But the old 75mm M3 gun which was still used by the most Sherman variants in 1944 could not penetrate any armour of the KT.
gunmetalxXx 2 years ago
@ltshiro "At will"? How so? The Sherman Firefly's would destroy Tiger tanks too, so it wasn't, "at will". The Tiger tank commanders had to be very wary of the Sherman Firefly's, or merely a numerically superior number of standard Sherman tanks.
Echeque5 2 years ago
look up your history and you will see that Most Tiger crews had about 15-20 kills on avg and some crews getting in too the 100s.
Firefly gun could kill a Tiger at 700m, Tiger could kill Firefly at near 3 times that range.
Numerically superior is important but the kill-ratio is too one sided to the germans.
ltshiro 2 years ago
@ltshiro - This tank is a King Tiger tank, not a Tiger tank. Two different tanks entirely. The King Tiger was plagued with serious reliability issues that were so bad that the book, "Tigers in Combat", points out that most of them never saw combat, as they were broken down so often. Kill ratio's aren't the only thing to look at in historically evaluating a tank. If there were 10,000 King Tiger tanks made and 9,999 broke down, only 1 made it to the battlefield and destroyed 100 much smaller...
Echeque5 2 years ago
@ltshiro ...Russian T-34 tanks before it was finally destroyed, that would give this tank a 100 to 1 kill ratio. But would that mean it's a good tank? Of course not.

Echeque5 2 years ago
Well, people just say what they think about this tank. If they say it's a cool looking tank then i think it is the truth and you shoould respect it. For me and most other people the King Tiger loos very "cool" indeed! But i think that's just a sense of taste, everyone has a different opinion about this. gunmetalxXx 2 years ago
The Tiger is known as "indestructible" because:
of its very good armour protection that safed the crew inside the tank plus of its very powerful main gun that could destroy any enemy tanks at 2 miles away!
This is the official version that most people know about. Of course we should not forget about the negative parts like its overheavy weight and engine/transmission failures which caused technical failures. But i think overall you make a bad balanced picture of it.

Now just imagine what it would be like if they had a better engine. Alright, You would speak german now!
gunmetalxXx 2 years ago
@gunmetalxXx - Speak German now? That's impossible. The King Tiger tank not only was extremely unreliable, but it also guzzled fuel when fuel was in short supply. When the huge amount of resources that were used just to make one King Tiger, along with the very great expense, are also factored in, this tank hastened Nazi Germany's defeat.Further, Nazi Germany could only dream of the industrial capacity of America and as such, never had enough of anything and this is the primary reason they lost.
Echeque5 2 years ago
@Echeque5 Most of these were not abandoned because of mechanical problems, but because there was no fuel anymore. don't forget, Germany was having difficult times supplying the front lines with fuel. Why do you think the US captured so many largely intact without any mechanical damage? Because tank crews simply ran out of fuel and had to walk back. german tanks were gas guzzlers at a time when germany was very short on fuel, this had to have an impact on thos captured tank figures.
