@ tofucrazy, it shouldn't matter what's on the phone already because you are 'restoring' it to the custom firmware. I didn't do anything before hand, I just restored it to the custom firmware.
have you put any applications onto your 3g from cydia? how are they running smoothly, im waiting it out for another week till i get my 3g but i have my itouch and was wondering would it be worth updating 2.0 software and then this?

but my iphone didn't do that bootloader thing at the end it just turned on

Don't have to restore first, you will restore to the custom firmware you make. Actually you don't have to do anything first.

It doesn't matter because you are restoring to the new custom firmware. Doesn't matter where you are at now.
