A truly great film with a really wonderful score! The stump pulling scene music obviously influenced maurice jarre for the barn building music in WITNESS.
Wowser! Thanks for the extended score!!! Cheers! I was a teenager when I saw this in the big city near us with a huge screen and great sound. Being a teen in the 50s was fabulous!
I watched it again last week on Channel 4 and enjoyed it more than ever. The wonderful score emphasises the theme of the nobility of the underdog and the redemption of the former gunman. The film is free of the cynicism underlying more recent westerns.

Has there ever been a better film than Shane? Its theme is universal -the underdog against the big corporations. The beautiful music matches the majesty of the landscape. I have never seen any other film which had such a strong feeling for community shown in the background music especially in the wedding scene- good-bye old pal I'm leaving Cheyenne and gonna Montana.
definitely my top 3 western favorite. I've seen this movie more times then I can count. The tree stump scene and the shoot out at the end still gives me goosebumps. I have young kids and hop to watch it soon with them.
I went to Tetons just to see where was filmed. I think Steven's did an amazing job capturing the area.
My parents took me to see SHANE at the Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan in May, 1953. I was six years old and it made quite an impression on me. It still looks terrific even this many years later, and the score is wonderful.
@toutarouyuki I'm glad to see many people sharing the same feeling with teary eyes on beautiful music sound. I also enjoy Japanese version of this song. I'm visiting Grand Teton this summer where Shane was filmed.
One gets so absorbed in the beautiful cinematography of Shane it's easy to overlook the beauty of the score, i.e. the music during the stump cutting scene which has to put a lump in the throat of anyone with any sensitivity. Thanks.

some call this the greatest western ever made.
others feel it is dated somewhat.
others say the magnificent seven is the definitive western ever made.
EVEN SO, THIS IS A MAJESTIC MOVIE.

OMG! Where is Cemetery Hill Track? No where to be heard or found on Youtube. Please someone upload it.
Its that epic piece where the homesteaders race back to their burning home.

Victor Young created some wonderful movie scores in his time. This one still stirs my emotions, and I get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye.

Shane is wonderful cinema, not merely a great Western. And, yes, the soundtrack lends to the overall quality.

One reason why I like so much old Western movies is their beautiful rustic and pastoral music like this in Shane.

@squirell1952 Hey, my friend, we shall whistle the good songs. We shall gather ye rosebuds whilst we may. They may not be there another day. :)
"Even if it's not good enough for anyone else but you, just sing. Sing a song!" (from Sesame Street). And that includes whistling as well.
Happy New Year! Glad to year from you! CHEERS!
