Bending Bamboo / Doblando Bambú

Impressive. I recently read to put a permanent bend in bamboo that it needs to be a fairly fresh stem which is bent and heated to 150 degrees celcius; is this perhaps only the case for thick stems of over 2 inches or five centimetres diameter? If someone could mail me and give me information on the strength of bamboo, I would appreciate it.

Now, is the piece entirely hollowed out?

The sand keeps the wall of the hollow bamboo from crushing like a bent straw. The sand is removed after bending.
