I went to saw David in concert recently in Perth, the audience was completely captured by his playing and he is a great guy, at the break he just wanted to meet everybody. He managed to turn the music into emotion, just brilliant.
It's like he has another person inside him - one is his inner teacher and the other is himself learning from his muttering, one of the best musical film's in my opinion too
It's not the Hungarian Rapsody I listen to whenn Helfgott play it. It is the dream of it, its memory. The strength isn't his point but he kidnaped you in a parallel world. I love this.
Listing to a composition for the first time is like eating a certain food ect for the first time. We tend to compare and grade music ect from our first experiance. If it does not raise the hairs on our backs the next time or vise versa, we critisize it. David is playing his interpratation of a masterpiece we've heard someone else play, and we pull out or pencil and paper and grade. Sad, but true.
He is without a doubt a musical person with a talent and a nuanced soul. His playing is not at a level of a great pianist or a genius as he is sometimes called due to his tragic or happy (depends on how you look at it) condition and outlook of his mind.
As long as he is happy and making music - I am happy for him. He does have something to say and that is much more then most pianists on stage today do.
I readed the book of Gillian Helfgott (his wife) and his life is a lot different than movie, anyway i appreciate a lot this video, he's the best human in this world, and his piano is more than good for a person that have so many 'mental problems' (i can't translate better).
When David is planning, the difficultés seem so easy, his high notes are like cristal,he is sooo musical and intense,he lives the music with all his soul.He is really a very great and genuine artiste.
Ok so there might be better versions technically but enjoying and being moved by music is not just about these things. i woul be simply delirious if I could play so effortlessly well. i would be euphoric infact. I cannot think of any pianist I would weant to see more live. His history and triumph over adversity is the closest thing i have ever known to a 'real' miracle and I m sure his fans like myself never cease to be moved and uplifted . We LOVE him and his playing.
what a performance. what an interpretation. what an inspiration. we are blessed to have witnessed him in his/our lifetime. the movie shine is a standing ovation to this genius. thank you so much for the post.
all those hi-falutin conservatory people are full of it. David Helfgott is a very gifted muscian who enjoys himself at the keyboard , and the audience enjoys with him. His gusto may sound a bit childish sometimes , but the art is called PLAY
@bonsema1 What is music? The voice of the soul or a series of mechanical keystrokes... I say I want to listen to a voice. A computer can make keystrokes, only a deep, passionate human being can provide me with a window to their and my soul.
It's not just a music piece with him, it's a whole adventure!
Sometimes he might sound as if he loses and regains focus, but I believe his expressive abilities are rich and highly creative. I'd listen to anything he plays.
i don't know about his piano playing, but he's an incredible talker. he managed to talk for the entire piece! i don't know many pianists who could do that
A genius! Liszt apparently didn't object to a free approach to his Rhapsodies. This is the most recreative performance I've ever heard. He relives the music rather than it being a museum piece set in stone. Remarkable.
the feeling you must get when playing such a masterpiece must be incomparable. I'd love to feel the music in my fingertips. To bring something alive that has been written by a mastermind and share it with a group of people that have nothing but appreciation. THAT must be one of the greatest feelings in the world.
I'm sure this is at the Old Vic in London. I was there for my birthday. Well, thats definately the shirt he was wearing anyway... It was an incredible night! He's quite a performer!
My son spoke to me of this movie and the true story behind it. Just watched it and now my life is so much richer. Just amazing.. thank you for the story and the brilliance of your music.
I meet him by accident in Ballarat Victoria as I was staying in the same hotel. Let me tell you if he is in the same place as you he will make sure to say hello even if he doesn't know you. Well I didn't know who he was till I walked past her Majesty s theater and saw a poster of him. Than it clicked that I have been eating breakfast with this guy for two days before going to work.
I'm not sure that an interpretation can be critizised, If you don't like David's interpretation, that makes it neither right nor wrong, it's just your taste. I personally love David's interpretations, and that is my taste. Plus it is always great to catch him live as he is a most generous performer, and wonderful to watch him play as well.
i recall after seeing this movie i was inspired to learn all of the music on the soundtrack. I'm a lover of playing Liszt music since this phase of my life. Thanks David!
From the technical point of view, bad interpretation, arbitrary, idiosyncratic. A student playing like this fails at any half decent music examination. But these imperfections are beautiful. Warm sound, soft touch, just enough accent at places just enough unexpected. Mesmerising! He puts his heart to it, and that is enough. In retrospect, perhaps, if he switched to jazz in his youth, he might have avoided the seizure. Perhaps his mind is too fluid, and the classics too rigid. Perhaps
@bighairybaby Liszt himself would mess around with his own music as well as that of other composers. So if you say that improvisation during a piece is not art, and that this is not Liszt, then you don't know what you're talking about. Liszt was one of the biggest advocates of improvisation on the work of others. Maybe do a bit of research before making wild accusations and talking about subjects you apparently don't understand. You, sir, are ridiculous (deserving of ridicule).
@ifreshwater I'm aware of that. I'm also aware that the modern art of interpretation is much more to do with fidelity than florid virtuosity. Even if I believed that Helfgott is a committed improvisor rather than a bad pianist, I'd still think that this is an awful performance. I'm sure that Liszt's legendary improv would not have rendered his works as slurred and spasmodic as Helfgott does. Also, I expressed an opinion; I didn't punch your gran. Chill out.
@bighairybaby "But don't pretend that it's Liszt. It's not." That is not an opinion, jackass. If you had said that you thought or felt this, it would be an opinion. And don't pretend like I'm overreacting. You're wrong! I might not be right, but you're definitely wrong. (About your first comment, that is.) Whether or not this is an awful performance doesn't change whether it is Liszt or not.
@ifreshwater Listen, we're having a chat about music and you're acting like a mental case. Calm down. The fact is, this performance goes way beyond the usual boundaries of interpretative flexibility and at many points deviates totally from the score. Maybe you've never heard a good performance of this piece, I don't know. But this is a terible one.
@bighairybaby I understand that we're having a chat about music. Just because you don't like a performance doesn't make it a bad performance. And nothing will happen without breaking boundaries. Almost all of the greats, in the arts, and the sciences, and literature, and politics, and just about everything were people who broke boundaries. Copernicus paved the way for a working heliocentric solar system. Without breaking boundaries we don't find what works and what doesn't.
@bighairybaby To add to that, Helfgott may not be one of the greats of the musical world, but he is certainly trying much harder than a lot of other people. He enjoys his playing as well as many thousands of persons around the world. According to Youtube, more people liked this performance than didn't. I realize it's not a very accurate way to judge something like this but this performance is good because people like it. Beethoven and Hummel also pushed boundaries with their Romantic works.
It's not just that the rubato in this interpretation is nuts; it's that the music is unrecognisable at several points. It's one thing to have a unique interpretation of a piece, but a performers unltimate responsibility is to communicate music as the composer intended. If it was really okay for a perfomer to just mess around with every aspect of a score nobody would bother to write anything down. If you like this playing, fine. But don't pretend that it's Liszt. It's not.
I used to be interested in psyquiatry, but they really fucked david, still he's got balls, he's not crying because of his inability to stay still or shame, and he's there making a concert. He's someone I really admire, I don't know why i'm writing this, but yeah...
It really upsets me at how some folks talk so badly about David Helfgott. He has done so much for classical music. He single-handedly introduced classical music to more people than any other pianist in recent times. David and his playing has captured the imagination of millions. Bravo David Helfgott!
David is an enigma. Psychiatrists have tried to "install" a diagnosis on him, with great difficulty, since he doesn't fit any particular behavioral pattern of one condition, but probably a combination. That said, his life is the piano and his long suffering wife, who at one point wanted to both profit from him...and see him get to his potential as well. I don't know if they're still married or not.
Thanks to science we've stopped demonising mental health issues and started to trying to understand them and help people who suffer from them. This is a perfect example of how people with these disorders can still be talented, passionate, david loves to hug people yet his disorder is commonly associated with withdrawal from society. . David is quirky, talented and endearing and there's nothing wrong with being different.
5-19-2010. He's full of glee at 63. Happy Birthday, David. Maybe you can come perform in my area sometime (Newberry Opera House, Newberry SC). Think about it. Many happy returns.
I get huge kick out of people who say they don't like classical music, I just say oh yeah? do you like cartoons, they always say yes, then I say how about Rhapsody Rabbit starring Bugs Bunny, and they say yeah it's great, then you wait for it to sink in, and the light to come on!!! LOL
@jagang31 Anyone who doesn't like classical music is either ignorant of music itself (as it is music in its highest and most intricate, moving form), or a moron. The vast majority of people on this planet are morons.
@farbrorblo Ah, look. Someone who clearly knows jack shit about musical theory or the history of music. Congratulations for bringing that to our attention.
@maulcs I don't know what you do for a living, but im a musician, and i've studied music for a long time. And i do like classical music, but im tired of people saying this and that kind of music is the best, and that everything else sucks. In my oppinion music is at its highest form when it is honest. It doesnt matter what genre.
You can see some of his former genius showing at 5:10 to 5:20.
I dont think that anyone has the right to critisize this man, he is a former prodigy that underwent many life changing events and I think that his story is amazing.
Music is about self expression and emulation, if you actually think you need to imitate a great musician such as Liszt, maybe you need a reality check. Just my humble opinion...
you can criticise him all you want but lets not forget that he really knows how to play good. the point is that he would never be pfor a keyboard teaching position at the Moscow Conservatory.
But he cheers people up , bless him , by his way of exposing the pieces.
@breathingtube You don't have to feel sorry for him! He's probably happier than you will ever be! Have you seen the movie? OR seen him live? Pure genius, & SO LOVED.
MOST of the audience SOBBED with appreciation & joy. You cannot IMAGINE the brilliance & perfection. EXQUISITE!
I took an ACCOMPLISHED Musician friend to see him. He stood on his chair & SCREAMED for an encore, & when I got the film out for him tears streamed down his face, in realisation of exactly WHO he'd seen Live. HEART & SOUL!
@ShmOprah Hi I think you may have misread who the i feel sorry comment came from. I'm with you, to hear him live is simply magic. ps check out some of his other clips that I have posted on the breathingtube channel.. If you haven't already. ps I have know David personally for the last 10 years and sorry is defiantly not one of the feelings you get in his presence.
@breathingtube Maybe I'm dense, but from the movie and other sources, I've never been able to find out, what the hell HAPPENED to him? Nervous breakdown? That would explain a lot if so. It almost makes me want to cry that I have not seen him live, only videos.
@breathingtube You're right :o) I meant to reply to kempff95.
I just want to add [to the people who criticise his technique .. while I'm sure there are some 'imperfections' in his work, he expresses more emotion [RAW & REAL LOVE] for the music & even the piano than any musician I've seen.
PS: Lucky you to have known him for 10years!
PPS: Geoffrey Rush immortalised him & told his story as I don't think anybody else could have. WHAT A beautiful & BRILLIANT Man!
@breathingtube :o) Sorry I mistook you for making the "I feel sorry for him" comment. Of course you'd be 'with me' if you posted the video. I agree 'to hear him live is magic'. As I said, I took a musician friend to see him live. The 1st half I felt was GOOD for a man who'd endured a mental illness, & the 2nd half changed my mind. My friend & I & the entire audience was in AWE. It was brilliant & you're right 'sorry for him' is DEFINITELY NOT a feeling you get in his presence! :o)
@ShmOprah So Glad you got to hear and see him in concert.... David comes over to my place regularly and we have brilliant conversations, he is quite remarkable.
@breathingtube@ShmOprah So Glad you got to hear and see him in concert.... David comes over to my place regularly and we have brilliant conversations, he is quite remarkable.
@ShmOprah is he still alive? where can I see him play i cried watching the movie, such a powerful movie. I'm a musician as well so this movie touched me deeply.
@kempff95 why..? he is so admirable to me, and probably to most everyone in his audience. remember: a mental disorder isn't a grounds for pity. i like to think of it as if he had a reached a level of understanding that not many humans can reach, and that brings about both his genius and his mental condition.

no se puede decir que este señor es pianista, pero luego escribe su persona:

No será de lo mejor pero tampoco creo que sea tan malo,
quizá sea el "poder de convicción" que tienen las películas que nos lleva a no ser tan imparciales.

And don't pretend like I'm overreacting. You're wrong! I might not be right, but you're definitely wrong. (About your first comment, that is.) Whether or not this is an awful performance doesn't change whether it is Liszt or not.
ifreshwater 1 year ago
@ifreshwater Listen, we're having a chat about music and you're acting like a mental case. Calm down. The fact is, this performance goes way beyond the usual boundaries of interpretative flexibility and at many points deviates totally from the score. Maybe you've never heard a good performance of this piece, I don't know. But this is a terible one.
bighairybaby 1 year ago
@bighairybaby I understand that we're having a chat about music. Just because you don't like a performance doesn't make it a bad performance. And nothing will happen without breaking boundaries. Almost all of the greats, in the arts, and the sciences, and literature, and politics, and just about everything were people who broke boundaries. Copernicus paved the way for a working heliocentric solar system. Without breaking boundaries we don't find what works and what doesn't.
ifreshwater 1 year ago
@bighairybaby To add to that, Helfgott may not be one of the greats of the musical world, but he is certainly trying much harder than a lot of other people. He enjoys his playing as well as many thousands of persons around the world. According to Youtube, more people liked this performance than didn't. I realize it's not a very accurate way to judge something like this but this performance is good because people like it. Beethoven and Hummel also pushed boundaries with their Romantic works.
ifreshwater 1 year ago
It's not just that the rubato in this interpretation is nuts; it's that the music is unrecognisable at several points. It's one thing to have a unique interpretation of a piece, but a performers unltimate responsibility is to communicate music as the composer intended. If it was really okay for a perfomer to just mess around with every aspect of a score nobody would bother to write anything down. If you like this playing, fine. But don't pretend that it's Liszt. It's not.

His playing is super interesting to listen to,.
He almost continually avoids standard cliche emotional phrasing. So its always fresh.
You need a real good technique to do that.

I don't know if they're still married or not.
sanjosemike 1 year ago

LOL
jagang31 1 year ago
@jagang31 Anyone who doesn't like classical music is either ignorant of music itself (as it is music in its highest and most intricate, moving form), or a moron. The vast majority of people on this planet are morons.

@maulcs And who th efuck are you to judge classical as the highest form of music. There is no higher form of music. There is just music.

@farbrorblo Ah, look. Someone who clearly knows jack shit about musical theory or the history of music. Congratulations for bringing that to our attention.
maulcs 11 months ago
@maulcs I don't know what you do for a living, but im a musician, and i've studied music for a long time. And i do like classical music, but im tired of people saying this and that kind of music is the best, and that everything else sucks. In my oppinion music is at its highest form when it is honest. It doesnt matter what genre.

Genius or not, he sucks at playing Liszt, nothing felt spectacular in his playing.
Liszt was a genius, and if one tries to imitate that without the right knowledge and wisdom, then it's a disgrace
PrincessDesert 1 year ago
Music is about self expression and emulation, if you actually think you need to imitate a great musician such as Liszt, maybe you need a reality check. Just my humble opinion...

I don't his style of playing. And he cuts many notes in the opening Friska theme, which I would name a little "Struggle"
Also he has a couple mistakes but I don't mind that.
Its pretty good. Some parts are alittle weird but I would said good.
5/5 :)

you can criticise him all you want but lets not forget that he really knows how to play good. the point is that he would never be pfor a keyboard teaching position at the Moscow Conservatory.

@breathingtube You're right :o) I meant to reply to kempff95.

@kempff95 why..? he is so admirable to me, and probably to most everyone in his audience. remember: a mental disorder isn't a grounds for pity. i like to think of it as if he had a reached a level of understanding that not many humans can reach, and that brings about both his genius and his mental condition.
