at school my class saw something just like that i told my teacher to look it up and it throw a bench over when my class saw the we all just run and scream and we all been saying i don't want to die this boy had run slow all the time and when that came now he run fast i was like wow we all went and run in the building that was true
This is a dust devil. Dust Devils are NOT supercell Tornadoes like you mostly see in the Great Plains, The Southern states, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, most of michigan, most of wisconsin, southern minnesota, missouri, and tiny sections of pennslyvania.
Well in some parts people call them Dust Tornados even though they aren't tornados. It is just what they call em. We get them a lot here in the desert but people back east seem astounded when they see one. Although recently a couple of elderly golfers were injured when a dust devil knocked their golf cart over on top of them so they had reason to be in awe. Oh and nice Target bag, :-p
Great vid - that dust devil was ASTOUNDING - we were there. It shrunk a little once it got into the camps (or maybe this vid is from the side of the city where it began) - but when it was in the open it was HUGE - like a city block at the base I'd say.
I love how the guy on the bike in the foreground just waits for it to move through the intersection - like it's just another traveler on the streets of Black Rock City.
good point and thanks for the comment. it didn't have much of a defined shape higher up, was mostly distinct only where it was close to the ground. But that would have been good to show too.
I don't know! But if I had to guess: the small dust devils/tornado's i've witnessed seem to arise from small, local atmospheric conditions: probably the heating of the desert surface by the sun. But then the larger, destructive tornados i'm guessing come from larger atmospheric situations, not just the heating of the sun?
it was in the black rock desert, nevada, about a couple hours drive northeast of Reno. it's on a dry lake bed with a consistency more like packed talcum powder than sand, so the dust whips up once disturbed like that... loved the people chasing it. :)
oh shit man THATS AN F5 DUST DEVIL!

It's dust devil not dust tornadoes. Tornadoes, waterspouts, and dust devils are different.

Could a dust tornado do the same damage as a normal tornado?

Nope
Martek100 4 years ago
Yes, a strong dust devil can do the same damage as a weak tornado. However, the average dust devil doesn't usually cause noticeable damage.
torontostorms 4 years ago
So its mainly just like a mini tornado then

Well, it's very unlikely to die in a tornado, even if you get hit by one (as long as you take the necessary precautions, that is).
