  • having sex after marriage doesnt mean anything your talking rubish, its possible to marry someone who has aids.. . or if your husband or wife cheats on you.. Just use condoms and test alll your partners with the at home aids test and be careful and then youll be fine.

  • Damnn this shit scare the shit out of me!,, and i dont even have HIV

  • If I may add to this video. I find it very helpful, but I disagree on one thing. You do NOT have to be married before having sexual relations with a partner, BF, GF, whatever. A ring and a some paper does NOT defined commitment nor honesty in your relationship. Does getting married bring your risk down? Nope. Think about it. However, if you believe in sexual relations before marriage then maybe. But reality is, it it NOT for most people a safe way to prevent it. (Excluding the ones who believe)

  • i m sex with in life only one partner many times if i have aids plz tell me

  • @cenanationful: This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. Only a doctor can diagnose you with anything. See a doctor and get tested for HIV. Watch our vids "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" and "Do I Have AIDS? Symptoms of AIDS" and "Did I Just Contract HIV? Symptoms of Primary HiV Infection" for more.

  • Does saliva or sweat carry the virus?

  • @comedaman1234: Watch our videos "HIV in the Household," "Top Ten Myths About HIV/AIDS," and "Ten More Myths About HIV/AIDS." Go to aidsvideos web site and click "FAQ". Short answer is "yes," but exposure to saliva or sweat alone in normal social interactions is not believed to pose a risk of HIV transmission.

  • @abadajos: AIDS is a syndrome (like a disease). It is caused by the virus called HIV. You can't "make" HIV. You have to contract it from a person who has been exposed to it or from their bodily fluids (e.g. by needle sharing). So no, two sexual partners who are both "truly HIV negative" (i.e. neither has ever contracted HIV) cannot "make" HIV. Go to the AIDSvideos web site and click "Myths" and "FAQ."

  • halo..i want to knw that...when we have symptoms in our body, does it mean that we have enough antibodies to be tested and get a correct result.............?...plz ans me and help ma..plz..thank u......and how accurate the serodia hiv test at that time...?plz ans...plz....and help me...

  • Halo...can i knw something about the particle agglutination test of hiv...?is it reliable..?..plz....ans me..and help me....thank u..please ans me.....

and i hav one more ques..i had a test after one month of the possible exposure.....and that time i also felt sick....tht time i had gonorreha....but the hiv test came out negative........so can i rely on the test that i dnt have hiv..?..plz ans me...and save me...

  • My girlfriend and I likes to perform oral sex. Is it very dangerous ??

    Please reply..

  • @QuantumCerberus: See our vid "Some ways you can contract HIV and the risk of each one."

  • @QuantumCerberus YOU HAVE TO TRUST EACHOTHHER!

  • @2011leroywright, @QuantumCerberus: Realize that if you have unprotected sex, you are betting your life on the belief that the partner does not have HIV, and you continue to bet your life on that every subsequent time you have unprotected sex. See our video by Phil Johnson, M.D.: "Condoms, Testing, Monogamy, and Honesty"

  • Informative and sensible video, but I have to say I'm sceptical about the "sex before marriage" part. Even in a married relationship, adultery is quite common in many parts of the world. Being married doesn't guarantee anything. Look at Lutheran Germany where those nice, married German businessmen and mayors drive to the Czech Republic to co-habitate with 50 Euro Roma prostitutes in West Bohemia. Sad as it is, marriage doesn't mean as much anymore.

  • How much marriage means depends on how much meaning the married individual ascribes to it. You're correct that if a spouse has sex outside of marriage with or without revealing this to the other spouse, marriage is significantly less meaningful and also then ineffective for HIV prevention. The fact remains that abstinence until marriage and fidelity in marriage are available, feasible options for HIV prevention, regardless of how many people actually choose this approach.

  • So much faith based propaganda. I refer to the reducing risks part! Safe sex works, regardless of the circumstances! That should be the greater message.

  • Every statement in this video and its script is based on scientific research findings; nothing in this video is based on any religious belief system. Becky and I have our own religious beliefs but the videos we've made to date have been secular and science-based. Any faith-based videos we made would be separately branded. AIDSvideos does do interviews with people working on HIV (both secular and religious organizations) but those are noted as interviews. See our content guidelines.

  • This is a great thread,

    Very informational and sensible,

    Thanks for sharing Eric.

  • i have couple questions

1.) so if i have oral sex with my gf does that mean i can get hiv?

2.) if you have sex with partner that have HIV is it 100% thaat hiv will be transmitted, or not always?

  • This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. (1) Yes, if your girlfriend has been exposed to HIV and you have oral sex with her, you could contract HIV. See our vid "Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One" for details. (2) Having sex with an HIV+ partner does not GUARANTEE that you will contract HIV, but the risk is real.

  • oh ok thnx so much

  • thanksu :)

  • You can't catch HIV from saliva? I just thought the risks are very low from saliva but technically you can. Saliva is not considered a bodily fluid?

  • "HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients. It is important to understand that finding a small amount of HIV in a body fluid does not necessarily mean that HIV can be transmitted by that body fluid .... Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV." [CDC, "HIV and Its Transmission," July 1999] Note that even though saliva doesn't transmit HIV, oral sex can. (You have contact with more than just saliva.)

  • your mom has aids oooooooooooooh!!!!!!!!!

  • If you have sex with a person has sex before marriage then you have had sex with everyone they had sex with . It only takes one person that .........had sex with a scum who has no moral fiber and who does not value having values or moral fiber. If your husband had sex with a hooker who had sex with 7 people per day times 7 days a week is 7 times 7 customers=48 aids sex shots towards death all from one frig who was with one person who is fornicating around and brings it to your table.

  • Even if he said what you claim, comments by an individual scientist are not guaranteed to have any scientific validity at all. Whatever isolated comments he may or may have not said at particular times, he agrees that HIV is the cause of AIDS, and moreover, there's nothing ANY scientist or person could say that would outweigh tens of thousands of published, peer-reviewed papers providing evidence that HIV is the cause of AIDS. Statements have little weight. Published peer-reviewed studies do.

  • Gallo and Montagnier don't question that HIV causes AIDS. From their joint letter to Harper's: "The position of us both is that HIV is the essential and sufficient agent that causes AIDS. One of us (Luc Montagnier) has emphasized that there may be .... other factors that can favour HIV transmission .... and also promote faster progression toward the clinical stages of AIDS in untreated HIV infected people ... but this does not put into question that HIV alone is the cause of AIDS." (aidstruth)

  • I had sex (protected sex) with a man last December. I went to get myself tested yesterday(march 16), and the results came out HIV-. I have not been able to sleep for for three days because I am still not confident that I am free from this disease. What should I do doctor?

  • This is Eric, not Dr. Kuhn. I'm not a doctor. If you're experiencing stress, consider seeing a licensed mental health counselor (psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.) to discuss how to manage your stress. Realize that since the sex was protected and you got an HIV- test result at 3 months, the odds are extremely high you are in fact not infected at all. Follow your doctor's advice for any follow-up testing. See our vid "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for more info.

  • wat ?

    6 months

    ???????

    somthin wrong

  • This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. In rare cases (e.g. immune-suppressed people) it can take up to 6 months after first exposure to turn HIV+ on typical blood/oral swab tests. Usually it's much sooner. See our video "The Top 10 Questions About HIV Tests" for details.

  • wat if u wait 6 months after sex and Test ?

  • Then you can be extremely confident that the test result is correct.

  • hi.. i really want to ask u sumthing..!! my frnd's doc 1st told him tht he cant become a dad cuz he had too much sex with unknown partners.. later he said tht he has aids.. my frnd went to UK for sum operation.. the doc said tht we cudnt remove the virus completely frm ur blood.. so u just have 2 yrs to live...!! plz tell me isnt there any cure for this..!!!?? plz i really need ur help..!! i dont want to lose him..! there might be sumthing tht can be done..!! plz help.. please..!!

  • 1 month passed,

    hows yor frend doing?

  • There unfortunately is no cure, and the reason it is hard to find a cure for it is because like the flu virus, the HIV virus is always mutating and changing. That is why we always have to change our flu shots.

  • I've never had a flu shot in my life and never will.

HIV is constantly mutating and there are so many viral strains of it they are calling it HIV A, B, and it's sub groups and so on.

What people don't know is that the human immune system has the ability to keep up with the HIV virus, so they take blood samples from those who have no symptoms but are carriers to find out why.

I know why. All viruses can mutate to a less harmful or more harmful state and the human immune system can keep up

  • This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. You're correct that HIV mutates rapidly, and that viruses can mutate into less harmful strains, and that *in some people* the immune system is able to keep it at bay without ARVs. However those people (long-term non-progressors) are a small minority of all HIV+ people. Frequently, they have a genetic mutation to one of the two receptors that HIV uses to enter cells (CCR5 delta 32 or deletion mutations). Don't assume your immune system can stop HIV.

  • Thanks Dr.. I learned a lot from this video

  • This info is wrong. It doesn't take 6 months for hiv test to turn postive, in reality if you do not have a suppressed immune system (i.e. drugs, kemo, cancer) then a 3 months test is conclusive... As stated by the CDC and almost every where else around the world. Also a 3month test accompanied with an RNA/DNA PCR can be definitive proof a person doesnt have HIV.

  • The info is not "wrong." We are making responsible, conservative statements in a brief summary video that's intended for a mass audience. Since the Internet includes both immune-suppressed and non-immune-suppressed people, we have to err on the side of caution (i.e. six months) when making brief statements for a mass audience. This video is supposed to be short so it doesn't drill down into those complexities. We'll post new videos discussing HIV test issues in more detail soon.

  • Our new video "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" is now available. It discusses test accuracy based on time since last possible exposure and other related issues in more detail.

  • Currently, there are no documented cases of HIV transmission through SALIVA. Be afraid of blood, sperm and vaginal secret ONLY!

    Happy SAFER sex!

  • will i get hiv from deep kissing? pls reply im very concerned ):

  • Of course, certain people would like you to conveniently forget that AIDS was called by a different name 20 years ago.

GRID stands for "Gay-Related Immune Deficiency." No matter how true and accurate that name is, it has been wiped from our memories. It is not politically correct to consider that those involved in the homo lifestyle have been walking incubators for a PANDEMIC that endangers everyone.

    Sickening.

Okay, history lesson is over. Let the attacks begin.

  • GRID is not a true or accurate name. It is misleading because it suggests that HIV is related to being gay. That's incorrect. HIV is related to having been exposed to HIV. There are HIV- gay men and HIV+ infants, transfusion recipients, workplace needle stick victims, and heterosexuals. By referring to HIV/AIDS as "GRID" in 2008 you showcase your ignorance of more than 20 years of scientific research and reveal your true agenda of wishing to stigmatize gay men.

  • I did not name the disease. The name GRID "Gay Related Immune Deficiency" was the name given by the scientists who were collecting the facts and trying to come to the bottom (if you will pardon the expression) of where it originated and why it was spreading through the population.

You are right. It is no longer a gay man's disease. 20 years later we are ALL in danger.

My true agenda is not to stigmatize gays. They are doing a bang-up job of that themselves. My agenda is that we do not forget.

  • And what do you mean by "Let the attacks begin?" Are you encouraging people to commit hate crimes against gays or HIV+ people? Or are you merely anticipating that people will criticize your hateful and ignorant comments? I hope the latter, but it's not clear from your wording. If you're going to preach hate against others, you should be careful not to use terms that could be interpreted as encouraging violence against others.

  • No, I am not advocating attack against gays. I am so accustomed to personal attacks against me when I attempt to remind the populace that I was just giving the cue.

Predictably, you responded with the name-calling. My comments were motivated by love for my fellow man, not hatred, and I do not see how you can accuse me of ignorance when I am reminding people of a FACT that has largely been forgotten. But an attack is an attack, and it was totally expected.

  • @ AmosPressley: I remember hearing about AIDS being labelled "GRID", but that was in the very early stage of awareness that "something" seemed to be causing illnesses largely in the gay population - and it was even theorised that "it" (AIDS) and being gay might be gene-related. This was obviously b4 it was discovered to be contagious. It was also before it was discovered that AIDS was affecting many straight people in Africa. Why do you make no mention of THAT fact if you have no hate agenda?

  • Your videos and comments elsewhere indicate that you consider yourself a Christian. Some reminders: (1) Christ preached "HEAL the sick," (Matt 10:8) not "HATE the sick." (2) "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven" (Luke 6:37) How about you take a break from condemning the alleged sins of others and focus on seeking forgiveness for your OWN sins?

  • fantastic video and great info..thank u x

  • fuck hiv!

  • sigh i just found out my bro is hiv+ hes 33 y.o and i dont no wat 2 do i cried prayed i dont no wat 2 do sigh i only have 2 bro but im da closest 2 my hiv+ bro its hard 2 deal with can ne1 with hiv tell me about it plz!!! thx

  • See our videos "Facing HIV as a Family," "Personal Testimonial of Cory Norlund," and the videos of Danny West, Cass Mann, and Charlie Johnson for information about HIV from people who are HIV+. Hang in there. If your brother follows his doctor's instructions exactly, he could have a long, healthy life.

  • ok thx

p.s i really appreaciate your help

  • The annual infection rate is expected to be DOUBLE that of those in previous years. The CDC say that stronger PREVENTION tactics are needed to curb the spreading of hiv infection. There are over 33 million! people living with hiv -or- aids around the world man! That's WAY too many people, aand your going to sit there and tell me they should be able to walk the streets? No way! Put 20 years on that number! Are we going to wait until 50% or greater occurs?

  • You've got your facts wrong. "Global HIV incidence [# of new infections per year] likely peaked in the late 1990s ... at over 3 million new infections per year, and was estimated to be 2.5 million ... new infections in 2007 .... This reduction ... likely reflects natural trends in the epidemic as well as the result of prevention programmes ..." [UNAIDS, 2007 AIDS Epidemic Update, p.6] Prevention and treatment programs are working.

  • No one can really complain about being quarantined if the standards are more than decent. As for stigma, if everyone is hiv + -or- has aids who will be applying any stigma? Keeping people that are spreading disease and are a health risk separate is NOT harmful, and does not mean that they will -or- are automatically be mistreated. What about all the lives they ruin each year? I don't want them around me-sorry, it's like that movie 28 days later i say. Quarantine equals saftey & healthy people.

  • Fortunately, we don't make human rights and public health policy decisions on the basis of Hollywood movie plots. The fact that you do suggests that you're probably not well qualified to be recommending public health policy. You needn't quarantine HIV+ people to protect yourself from HIV; you just need to make responsible decisions yourself.

  • I'm far from Japanese, if your trying to make a plea based on on perceived racial background (username/ect). Weather you like it -or- not, these folks ARE willfully spreading this to others. You can't just excuse this when you look at annual infection rates. Out of 2.5 million, how many should be excused for infecting healthy people "accidentally". I don't see why i should excuse them, or ignore what's going on to be politically correct. This is serious and should be dealt with accordingly.

  • You're completely missing the point. I was commenting not based on any perceived ethnic background on your part (if I were making assumptions based on your username, I would have assumed you're Chinese) but rather on the injustice of imprisoning innocent people without cause. You're assuming without evidence that HIV+ people are willfully spreading HIV. Even if a few are, you can't assume they ALL are and imprison them all on that basis!!!

  • They could have whatever they want, cable, libraries, nice grounds, the best foods and a higher quality of life than they currently enjoy. They would be among fellow sufferers so they would not be the target of stigma, ridicule, ect. The world world be a happier, healthier & safer place for everyone. The honor system does NOT work. They are destroying everything, imagine not having to worry about aids because everyone is off the streets, that would be FUCKING awesome! This disease is disgusting!

  • People said the same thing about the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, and they weren't right (and that wasn't right) either. Even if you believe that quarantined HIV+ people would have a "higher quality of life," that's not your decision to make. By definition, quarantining people makes them the targets of stigma; it's an automatic social outcome. Stop overgeneralizing. Many HIV+ people do not want to infect others and take steps to prevent that. They aren't "destroying everything."

  • I think EVER country shold make testing MANDATORY, do sweeps for the infected, separate them and keep them isolated. I'm not saying they should be harmed or mistreated, i actually think that organizations like your and other should help design and oversee that everything needed is provided. There is too many of them, especially in Africa / India / Russia / Asia / America & in Europe. The idea of no aids in 30 years should be the incentive, even you should thinking this is the best solution.

  • It would be impossible (except in a police state, and likely even then) to effectively enforce mass mandatory testing of the entire population and to ensure that everyone had been tested even against their will. Quarantining people is by definition harming and mistreating people; it's violating their rights. It can only be justified when there's an absolutely compelling public health interest that overrides the individual liberty interest. HIV is not such a case.

  • Everything IS possible...

  • The amount of people they infect each year IS cause for public concern. I know how aids is spread, i know that is not airbourne, but i also know that it is an epidemic and it's carriers are now living for 20-25 years. This makes them able to destroy a great deal of lives. How many people are infected world wide? My solution would put almost a complete end to new infections versus the current solution. These folks are too dangerous to allowed to co-habitat with the health.

  • You need to study the history of the HIV epidemic. What it has clearly shown is that when HIV+ status is stigmatized, people avoid being tested and avoid seeking treatment, so the virus spreads more. When HIV+ status is destigmatized and treatment is made available, people get tested and treated and the spread is reduced. Your "solution" would massively stigmatize HIV+ status, drive people into hiding, and increase spread. You need to look at how people would RESPOND to your system.

  • There would be no elective testing if it were up to me, it should be MANDATARY. No room to hide, go underground, ect. I don't think it's right to let these folks keep destroying the quality of life we enjoy. There are 33 MILLION-PLUS! If quarantined in the best of conditions, there is no room for complaint, and this disease would be all but gone in a short span of time, what wrong with that? You make it sound like i'm saying concentration camps, i'm saying everything the same-just separate.

  • People with HIV are doing nothing to destroy your quality of life. On the other hand, unjustified segregation of people for no rational justification has been a necessary enabling step in some of the greatest injustices of history, including the Holocaust, the Cambodian death camps, and the internment of Japanese Americans in WWII. Who are YOU to decide if there's "no room for complaint" by a person who's been "quarantined" against their will for no reason?

  • Separate but equal? See Brown vs. Board of Education. Being not free is not the same as being free! Being restricted from traveling is not the same as being free to travel! You would take nurses infected by a needle stick, hemophiliacs and others infected through transfusions, and children infected at birth away from their families and quarantine them? Before you start recommending quarantines, learn something about disease transmission public health, and what happens when quarantines are tried.

  • If a Dried blood is HIV+.

if a person had cntact with the blood(wound, eye, etc)

    will the person be infected?

  • This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. There are no guarantees, but HIV remains viable outside the body for only very short periods of time. It degrades quickly in the environment (UV, drying, etc.). I haven't investigated this specifically, and I don't recommend that anyone treat HIV+ blood casually, even dried blood, but for my part, I wouldn't worry much if I had contact with HIV+ blood that had been fully dried out for an hour, for example. (I avoid all contact with blood to be safe regardless.)

  • Thank you :D

  • What you need to know is that people with hiv & aids are killers, they kill 2.5 million people a year and are never prosecuted. They ruin the quality of human life and should not be allowed to walk freely among healthy individuals. It's time to turn the tables on them and separate them from society as a whole, worldwide. This will curb the spread of hiv & aids to nearly zero because this disease can be cured through quarantine. A cure will never come, so this is the best option for 30 years.

  • First of all, there's no public health justification for quarantining HIV+ people at all. It's not like XDR-TB--a disease that highly contagious and airborne. Second, if people knew that if they tested HIV+ they would be exiled, would they get tested? No. So no one would know their status, so no one would change their behavior and/or get treatment to reduce the risk of transmitting it, so the disease would spread MORE. Also, stop making generalizations. Lots of HIV+ people try to prevent spread.

  • HIV is a bacteria and not a virus, the body eat food and it breaks down into nutrient to fuel the body. Then it breaks down into a bye-product. And this is what the HIV feeds off. That's why it feed off the kidney to the point that it the kidney fails.

  • This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. HIV is not a bacterium. If it were, you would expect some antibiotics to be able to treat HIV infection. They don't; they only treat some symptoms (like bacterial pneumonia and other opportunistic bacterial infections) but not all (like Kaposi's sarcoma). HIV is a retrovirus. It's been imaged in electron micrographs and genetically sequenced. Antiretroviral medications reduce the rate at which HIV disease progresses, which wouldn't be true if it were a bacterium.

  • How many years is many years? Do I have to worry about high risk sex 12 yrs ago?

  • If you have any risk factors for HIV at all, regardless of how far back, you should be tested for HIV. High risk sex 12 years ago (or after any other period of time) is absolutely a reason to see a doctor, discuss your risk factors, and be tested for HIV.

  • I hate to be nit-picky, but the ceremony of marriage is irrelevant to HIV infection risk. Having an exclusively monogamous relationship carries exactly the same low risk, with or without the marriage ceremony. "Sex before/without marriage" need not necessarily elevate risk. Fornication need not imply promiscuity. Doubtless there IS often a correlation between the two, with fornicators likely to have a more "liberal" approach to sex than those who abstain.

  • what are the chances of contracting HIV though oral sex? Is it really common? How about for the receiver or the giver?

  • See wikipedia article on "HIV" for a table showing risks of transmission for different sexual practices.

  • why won't you guys mention about the early test. its like 96% accurate. you can take the test one week after exposure.

  • See our new video "The Top Ten Questions About HIV Tests" for more detailed info about tests and testing.

  • Does this mean that all tests have a six month period after infection before they can be deemed to be an accurate indicator of HIV status? Do some tests give more accurate results?

  • No. This is a complicated topic and we're working on new videos about it. Modern "HIV+" test results are rarely wrong (false positives). However, you can't assume that an initial "HIV-" test result, less than six months after exposure, proves you haven't contracted HIV. PCR detects the presence of the virus itself, not antibodies, and can give a positive test result sooner than antibody tests.

  • Sharing needles for IV drug use 67/10000

    Receptive anal intercourse 50/10000

    Needle Stick 30/10000

    Receptive Penile/Vaginal int 10/10000

    Insertive anal intercourse 6.5/10000

    Insertive Penile/Vaginal int 5/10000

    Receptive fellatio 1/10000

    Insertive fellatio 0.5/10000

  • From the source I cited, this is the authors' estimates of risk of HIV transmission per these particular exposure routes to an infected source (I'm simplifying the fractions):

    Blood Transfusion 9000/10000

    Childbirth (no precautions taken) 2500/10000

  • Because of the 500 character limit, this is going to be posted in two parts. My source is: Smith, D. K., Grohskopf, L. A., Black, R. J., Auerbach, J. D., Veronese, F., Struble, K. A., Cheever, L., Johnson, M., Paxton, L. A., Onorato, I. A. and Greenberg, A. E. (2005). "Antiretroviral Postexposure Prophylaxis After Sexual, Injection-Drug Use, or Other Nonoccupational Exposure to HIV in the United States". MMWR 54 (RR02): 1-20.

  • I really appreciate the video. it's scary but very good for my own protection. thanks i will follow every thing possible to also be one less statistic.

  • Can you get aids from recieveing oral sex (I am a man) from a woman.

  • Yes, it is possible. If a woman is HIV+, her vaginal fluids will contain HIV, which could then contact the man's mouth's mucous membranes during oral sex. Using a dental dam would reduce the man's risk of contracting HIV.

  • He was asking if you can get HIV by inservited fellatio.

  • You're right, I totally misread his question. Yes, it's believed possible for an HIV+ woman to transmit HIV to a man by performing oral sex on him. The risk was estimated as one time per 10,000 unprotected occurrences [Varghese et al, "Reducing the risk of sexual HIV transmission: quantifying the per-act risk for HIV on the basis of choice of partner, sex act, and condom use". Sex. Transm. Dis. 29 (1): 38-43.] but mouth or genital sores or other STDs could raise the risk.

  • 1/10000 is the risk of receptive fellatio I believe, I think the risk for insertive fellatio is 0.5 out of 10000. My source is Smith, D.

  • Argh! I stand corrected, AGAIN, on the SAME QUESTION! ;-) Thank you for straightening this out. Yes, the source I cited (referenced in the wikipedia article on HIV) also gives the risk numbers exactly as you cited.

  • Always glad to be of help on this subject. As a 23 year old gay man living in the NYC area I'm very concerned that HIV/AIDS is making a comeback among people in my age bracket. Thank you so much for your videos attempting to provide education on this subject.

  • Question for AIDSvideos:(seeing as you, although not a doctor, are well informed, and i admire how you help people) Can a virus be tottally cured? becasue i have a virus,( not of sexual transmision) and i have been told that i will have it for life.

  • I'm not aware of any treatment we have that can cure a virus where the body is incapable of ridding itself of that virus on its own. However in some cases like HSV-1 (cold sore virus), even though the body can't eliminate it completely, the immune system often gradually gains the upper hand and the person may become asymptomatic, although the virus remains present in the nerves and suppressed.

  • Thanks for the answer

  • good shit

  • and now its hard to sleep... can u plz tell me the chance tht i could hav got hiv..... and when is it a good idea to get a test..???? thnx man i duno if she was positive(she told me tht she always practices safe sex) :S

  • This is Eric Krock, and I'm not a doctor. It is believed possible to contract HIV via oral or vaginal sex with or without a condom. • hi,, u seem to know a lot so i need advice,, this is what happened 2 days ago,, i had an affair with a gurl who i think has sex alot, we were kissing(around 10-15 min) and she gave me an oral for like 10 min(no protection)... then we started intercourse(i did put a condom) and i decided to stopped after 5 min becuz i just got scared of gettin a disease or sumthin(willpower worked i guess).....

  • Thank god there is someone talking about HIV/AIDS on YouTube who is in touch with reality. We're drowning in all these 'AIDS dissenters' who seem to have little familiarity with the scientific method. Thank you.

  • Is it possible to get Aids from a sex worker in kenya through reciving oral sex without a condom and vaginal with. And how effective is PEP cobivor.

  • This is Eric Krock, and I'm not a doctor. I'm assuming you're a male who received oral sex without a condom & had vaginal sex with and that you're referring to PEP via combivir. It is believed possible to contract HIV via oral or vaginal sex with or without a condom. See the "HIV" article on Wikipedia for a good table showing relative risks of different practices. If you think you may have been exposed to HIV, see a medical doctor immediately and ask what you should do.

  • satanist

  • I'm letting that comment through just to let the world see how foolish StreetSmartVideo is. For the record, Dr. Kuhn is a devout Christian and about as far away from a "satanist" as I could imagine. StreetSmartVideo: how about not shooting your mouth off about things you know nothing about?

  • As far as I'm concerned propagating erroneous information is pure satantic. It's the meds that people are dying from. And now you're sending that garbage to Africans. Remember The Tuskegee Experiment. What study specifically states that HIV is the cause of AIDS?

  • See the "Myths" page at AIDSvideos dot org for references to studies showing that HIV is the cause of AIDS and that ARVs are effective for treating HIV infection, prolonging patient lifespan, and reducing opportunistic infections.

  • So...if it is the drugs that is killing people, what was killing people living with AIDS in the 80's since there were no medications at that time. Your belief system is what is killing people

  • to AIDSvideos: where can I be tested for free? Will a regular blood test do?

  • Make an appointment with a medical doctor. They will tell you what test or test(s) are right for you after they take your medical history. For example, if this kiss took place six months ago and you have no more recent possible exposures, an oral swab or blood antibody test alone might be enough. Ask the doctor. Public health clinics in almost any country will test you for free.

  • for how long can the hiv be detected after having intercorse with an hv person

  • Tests don't detect the HIV from the source infected person's bodily fluids (e.g. semen, vaginal fluids). Rather, a PCR test detects HIV once the recipient has been infected and HIV is reproducing inside them. How long that will take will vary depending on amount of HIV exposed to, strain of HIV, genetic resistance factors, etc. See a doctor if you think you've been exposed to HIV.

  • One time a boy that has Aids kissed me in my upper lip and in my mouth.I didn't see any blood in his mouth or teeth.I don't remember if I had blood in my mouth or teeth.I hope not!!!

I usually don't bleed in my mouth or teeth unless I

pull my lips or brush my teeth real hard. This happened 3 years ago.I don't have any of the symptoms, if I get sick a week or so later I get better. I hope I'm O.K.,but sometimes I start to panic. Can anyone help me?

  • Risk of HIV transmission through light kissing is believed to be zero. Risk through deep kissing is considered to be either zero or near zero. The risk that you contracted HIV from that kiss is probably zero. However, there's a simple step so you can know the answer and stop worrying: get tested! It's free, easy, and will put your fears to rest.

  • you mean get a regular blood test? Will that tell

    me everything?

  • Thank you so much! very useful and comforting information! Will do the test as soon as six months pass! and hope..bottle of champagne ready! cheers!

  • Don't wait six months--you don't need to wait and wonder! See a doctor now and ask to be tested with PCR (polymerase chain reaction), which can measure HIV viral load in the blood (if it is present) well before antibodies develop.

  • HI! I had anal sex with a girl in north east brazil. I was drunk and forgot the condom (yeah, well done eh?!). Well am scared, completly. waking up at night and stuff like that. what is the possibility I contracted HIV? and what should i do? and if I contracted it? solutions? thak you so much!

  • Don't panic. See a medical doctor immediately and follow their instructions on testing. Ask if your possible exposure was recent enough that post-exposure prophylaxis (short course of ARVs) would make sense. Your odds of contracting HIV from a single exposure are probably low. Adult prevalence rate of HIV in Brazil is 0.7%, so unless she has other risk factors (sex work?), there's a high chance she was HIV-.

  • Even if she was HIV+, risk of contracting HIV from single instance of unprotected insertive anal intercourse is 6.5 per 10,000 instances. [Wikipedia HIV article, citing European Study Group (1992). "Comparison ... in 563 stable couples". BMJ. 304 (6830): 809-813. Also Varghese et al (2002). "Reducing the risk of sexual HIV transmission: quantifying the per-act risk for HIV on the basis of choice of partner, sex act, and condom use". Sex. Transm. Dis. 29 (1): 38-43.]

  • Finally, in the relatively unlikely (although possible) event that you contracted HIV from a single sexual encounter, follow your doctor's instructions. With proper monitoring and management, HIV+ people may now in many cases be able to have a relatively normal quality of life and normal lifespan. You may wish to see a counselor about the stress you're currently feeling. Good luck and best wishes!

  • I think i may have been stuck w/ an hiv infected syringe, the next day the wound became red all around, so i went to the hospital and they gave me antibiotic to take for 7 days. If the needle was dirty, what is the % that i will get hiv, 100% certain/90?/ when can i be tested? If i have it i'm going to kill myself at the end of the year, no joke.

  • See a doctor IMMEDIATELY to get personal medical advice. I'm not a doctor. Not sure how long ago the needle stick took place. If you were exposed to a syringe with possible HIV, ask if post-exposure prophylaxis (short course of ARVs) is right for you. Sounds like needle might have not had HIV. Even if it did, risk of HIV transmission in percutaneous needle stick is only 0.3% on average. [DM Bell, Am J Med, 19 May 97, 102(5B):9-15.] You can be tested various ways (PCR, antibody test) over time.

  • Above all, don't ever commit suicide. The odds are overwhelming you won't contract HIV from a single needle stick. Even if you do, being HIV positive is no reason to kill yourself. HIV can often be managed quite well. With modern medical monitoring and treatment and ARVs if/when needed, HIV+ people may be able to have a normal lifespan and quality of life. You can have a great, full, meaningful life even if you're HIV positive. Life is precious--don't waste it or end it!!!

  • The stick was in my chin on 7/28/07. I'm consumed with thoughts about becoming positive, i don't smoke, drink, ect. I enjoyed life whole heartedly up until now. The fact that the doctor administered cephalexin because of the redness around the wound means something. I've never had an infection from a needle prick at the D.R's office.Quality of life is paramount, i decide my fate, people die all the time i'm not afraid, but this is an undignified, prolonged, miserable existance.

  • Please seek counseling from a licensed psychiatrist to help evaluate how best to address your understandable anxiety. Also, please have an appointment with a medical doctor to discuss an HIV testing sequence that will hopefully prove you free and clear anyway. Administering an antibiotic such as cephalexin in no way indicates the doctor thought you'd been exposed to HIV; it was just a precaution due to the local redness against bacterial infection.

  • AIDS is BIG business!

    Hooray for you!

  • Censoring of comments also I see.

  • Actually, I just approved three ignorant and misleading comments from you alone. My policy for moderation of comments is clearly documented on the AIDSvideos web site. Go there and click "Comments Policy" to see it. I spend more time than I should approving and debunking lies from denialists, not to mention deleting comments with outright obscenities and personal attacks on presenters.

  • The #1 killer of HIV positives who are taking HAART is liver failure, a side effet of the toxic chemicals in HAART.

  • Even if it's true that liver failure is the #1 killer of HIV positives on HAART, and I'm not sure it is, it completely misses the point. An HIV positive who meets the criteria for HAART is more likely to die of HIV/AIDS if they don't take HAART than they are to die of HIV and all HAART side effects put together if they take HAART. Studies clearly show that HIV positives meeting criteria for HAART live longer on HAART than without HAART. References in next comment.

  • From AIDStruth: A meta-analysis of 54 ARV clinical trials showed that using one ARV reduced progression to AIDS or death by 30% compared to a placebo, using two ARVs reduced progression by an additional 40% vs. one ARV, and using three ARVS reduced progression by an additional 40% vs. two ARVs. • j2thadee thats terrible news if you happen to have HIV and HEPc.

  • it is very usefull and simple for every one even for second languagers

  • why hasn't the virus ever been isolated in the first place ..... that would be a good place to start .....

  • AIDSvideos person are you a doctor? and what do you think of AZT?

  • As stated at my web site, I am not a doctor. Becky Kuhn is an M.D. specializing in HIV/AIDS and she reviewed and approved this video for accuracy. AZT was one of the first antiretroviral drugs. Even as monotherapy, studies showed it extended lives. See AIDStruth dot org for details. Now there are more and better ARVs used in combination; AZT monotherapy is most widely used for prevention of mother-to-child transmission in resource-constrained settings.

  • Even mainstream studies show that AZT shortened everyones life. Why lie and spread misinformation?

  • Wrong. BW002 trial showed only 1 of 145 patients treated with ARV died vs. 19 of 137 on placebo; 24 on AZT had opportunistic infections vs. 45 on placebo. [NIAID citing Fischl et al, "The efficacy of azidothymidine (AZT)...." N Engl J Med. 1987 Jul 23;317(4):185-91.] ACTG016 trial showed that HIV+ patients with CD4 counts of 200-500 on AZT were less likely to experience disease progression. [NIAID citing Fischl et al, "The Safety ..." Ann Intern Med. 1990 May 15;112(10):727-37.]

  • lol. you dont answer questions with GUTS do you. your videos preach command science not scientific proof. you still did not post or link to the study or studies that supposedly proof HIV causes aids. you always speak of this overwhelming proof and overwhelming consensus but where is the proof that led to this? deal me the why and the how...throw some logic into it.

EVADE AND DISTRACT thats all you have.

  • Wasn't Dr. David Ho responsilbe for coining the phrase"HIT early and hit hard" with regards to Hiv meds. Well we all don't need to be reminded of what a disaster that became now do we.....Just how many people lost their lives from Grade 4 events because of his "Hit early and hit hard" Mantra.....Ho has NO credibility what so ever........

  • First of all, research continues about when it's best to start ARV therapy, so that's an open question. Second, even if Dr. Ho had said something that was wrong, the whole point of the scientific method is that results do not depend on the individual scientist, they are dependent on the METHOD for validity. As usual, HIV denialists don't understand what the scientific method is or why it works. Dr. Ho's published results in this paper remain valid; they've never been overturned.

  • At thr end of the day Dr. David Ho ****** up and now thousands of people are dead....Your mantra means NOTHING to me but I'm sure the loved ones and families of those who were POISONED to death with HIV MEDS may find comfort in your words but I don't

  • As usual, the HIV denialist Saidrick4 provides no references to studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals to support his wild claims that ARVs are poisons that killed thousands. We have a choice between believing the evidence from 6000+ scientific studies published in reputable scientific journals like Science, Nature, etc. ... or we can just believe whatever some guy on YouTube named Saidrick4 says "because he says so." I find Science and Nature more convincing.

  • For all you doubting Thomas's who don't think that Anti retrovirals can't or don't cause end stage liver disease copy and paste these into Google SEARCH..UPMC Health System News: Liver failure is the most common cause of ...

Acute Renal Failure in Hospitalized Patients with HIV

  • As usual, the HIV denialist Saidrick4 highlights possible side effects of ARVs without acknowledging their main effects, which are increased net quality and quantity of life in those are taking them compared to controls who do not! Most medications have possible side effects. You have to rationally compare the frequency and severity of side effects with the benefits.

  • I think if I was HIV Pos, which for the record I'm not, I'd be inclined to forgo the "Possible net quality of life" in view of all the dangerous side effects of taking ARV'S I'd take my chances with out them thanks very much.Just read the listed side effects on the drug packet inserts.

  • You're entitled to your opinion, Saidrick4. And I hope everyone will accord your opinion the importance it deserves, namely, "the opinion of some guy named Saidrick4 on YouTube who isn't a doctor and thinks he knows more than CDC, NIH, WHO, and UNAIDS and doesn't believe the scientific evidence that HIV causes AIDS." HIV patients making treatment decisions based on your opinion would be like NASA making flight plans based on an opinion from the Flat Earth Society.

  • wow...quoting Duesberg...are you allowed to do that?

instead of copying and pasting your doubletalk how about answering just one question without a canned answer.

is their a study that PROVES HIV as the cause of AIDS? POST THAT.

instead you'll delete this Mr. Evasion.

or maybe you'll just deal us more goosechase...

  • If you knew how to read a journal reference, you'd know the article was BY Weiss & Jaffe and ABOUT Duesberg, not BY Duesberg. See the "Myths" page on my AIDSvideos dot org web site for references of NUMEROUS studies proving HIV causes AIDS; no space here. I have written standard answers to save time because you denialists ask the same uninformed questions over and over. Accusing me of evasion is ridiculous; I've created a whole web site and videos to confront you. Lose the obnoxious attitude.

  • Wrong. NIAID: Many viruses are pathogenic even after antibodies appear [Oldstone MB, "Viral persistence," Cell 1989;56(4):517-20], including polio [Kurth R, "Does HIV cause AIDS?" Intervirology 1990;31(6):301-14], measles [Gershon AA in Principles and Practices of Infectious Diseases, 3rd ed. NY: Churchill Livingstone, 1990, pp. 1279-84.], cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, and varicella zoster [Weiss & Jaffe, "Duesberg, HIV and AIDS (commentary)" Nature 1990;345:659-60.].

  • AIDS in America, especially homosexual AIDS is 100% preventable. All gays need to do is sit down and shut their mouths.

Simple, but it is 100x more successful than the scientific dialogue going on here.

  • HIV is not the cause of AIDS.irrevocable AIDS comes from years of damage via drugs like heroin and nitrate inhalants(HIV latent period is a euphemism for this drug damage).same as smoking cigarettes for 10-20 years.nitrates are used by some homosexual men for anal intercourse, a drug rarely used by heterosexuals, that is why the gay community is at risk. if you are gay do not use "poppers"(nitrates) they are poisonous. the arrival of AIDS cooresponds with the drug use explosion of the 60s.
