A black belt in theory should know a persons level after one roll getting to know a student peronally is nice but with the lack of black belts this is not always possible. Standards will be maintained as long as black belts maintain integerity and do not become money motivated
What is your opinion on non black belts promoting students?
According to the ibjjf anyone being promoted to blue to brown must be promoted by a black belt; someone to black belt, has to be promoted by a 2nd degree black belt or higher.
I know some teachers go by the standard of promoting students as long they are two belts higher than the student being promoted. Ie, a brown belt can promote someone to blue, a black belt to purple, 1 degree black to brown, 2nd degree black to black, etc..
i share your opinion on the belt system as far as it being not as important as it is sometimes portrayed and as it is not to be taken advantage of for the sake of given out like "candy". I do not care to participate in a belt test if i have to pay money for my belt. I personally do not think that is necessary.I just want to learn.
Pardon me Ken, i noticed you have a black belt with red tips, what does that mean? My background is merely boxing, where u jump rope and on wednesday we try to know each other out. Thanks! I appreciate your videos.
I actually agree with all the points in this video. When I got my blue belt from Royce he never tested me in the literal sense, (there where no set moves I had to show). He based me getting my belt off the fact that while rolling I taped all other white belts, tapped a blue belt and hung in there with the one stripe blues. When I moved to my current location I became involved with a school that gave rank to certain people based on just being able to do certain moves. I always tapped higher belts
The black belt is belt no 1. All the others belts are little goals to achieve in the journey towards black. They help keep a student motivated in that tough journey.
A good way to tell if you are as good as your belt says you are is competitions. Or for me, anyways. Although I am new to BJJ, it makes me feel good to see blank white belts from our school getting W's over 3- and even 4- stripe white belts. Basically if you're a purple belt at your school and go to another school and roll with a blue belt and get smashed then your instructor is probably to lenient in his promotions.
Tell ya how I was brought up I asked Pedro Sauer about this he told me it this way.
Pedro I asked him my friend what is blue belt and how to you get to be a black belt.. Look my friend over there see that guy he is a blue belt he is very tuff, see that guy he is a Purple belt is is really really very tuff, see that Brown belt oh he is really very very much really very tuff, oh and that guy over there he is a black belt he is really really very very very very tuff I mean really very tuff :)
Hey Ken, I'd love to know what you think about the IBJJF and their restrictions on how long you have to wait between belts. As I understand it there needs to be a certain amount of time between each promotion. Thoughts?
Great video. Very true for any martial art. I think BJJ specifically has a pretty good set up for ranking at the moment, based very much on quality knowlede and ability to apply that knowledge against a live opponent, I hope the mass majority of BJJ always stays this way and doesn't not give into the belt factory mentallity of so many Mcdojos out there.
@kenprimo Sorry, you could probably barely decipher my comment lol so plauged with grammatical mess ups. I've practiced Karate for many years and hope to add Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu soon, I'm very excitied! It looks fascinating! How long did it take you to reach 1st degree black belt Ken? And what were the most important things you learned along the way. Whether actual techniques or more on the side of philosophies what are the main things BJJ has taught you?
I agree, in my school you earn your belt on the mat. The "test" is more of a right of passage/ psychological test where you roll with no breaks against everyone in the school for 10-15 minutes..
I think that is what separates bjj from a lot of the traditional martial artists. I became a blue belt when I started rolling at a blue belt level. The actual receipt of the belt was merely my instructor acknowledging what I already knew to be true. in Trad MA the test is everything..

@concretejujitsu your belts doesn't mean much when a lower belt taps you and beats you at the tournaments

@WhiteOps13 I agree, belts have no relevance to tournaments

I think belt = skill , pure and simple , and i think that the love for the jiu jitsu plays a big role in all that system !
buchechajj09 9 months ago
@buchechajj09 Belt does not equal skill. How is belt = skill when I've seen blue belts submit brown and black belts in both Judo and BJJ ?

@pcjudosambo Right here on brazil i've never seen a blue belt defeat a brown belt !
