  • Stop commenting about the whip..

    The horse isn't in pain...

  • Ah excellent. Makes a lot of sense. Thanks a mill, I really appreciate the advice! Wish you all the luck in the future! :)

  • How do you get the horse to stop doing the piaffe again? do you just ask for extension?

  • Stop your cues and aids for piaffe and ask for "and whoa" - or however you ask. I add the "and" to signify a downward transition. You can ask for an extension when you get stuck, or you stop having suspension, and to make the horse think "forward" again. Disclaimer - this advice is coming from me, Deirdre, not from the professional, Matt McLaughlin, in the video. But this is my understanding of it and how I work on piaffe with my horses.

  • how do you do Piaffe

Very nice training, amazing to see such steadfast progress in such a short term. How much would it cost to have a horse trained in dressage by this talent man?

  • So then for the Passage, did you just ask for more forward movement while asking her to Piaffe? Or how did you do that?

  • Yes, in the simplest of terms. Allow more forward motion, keep the suspension, slightly different aids.

  • the use of the whip, the fact that the horse has its mouth open, and it's ears back literally the entire time whilst mounted says it all -.-

  • The whip touches her maybe 4 times during the entire thing - difficult to tell from a 2 dimensional point of view, but I can assure you that's how it was.

  • @battlingtheodds - remember that the horses ears point to what they are paying attention to.. say.. the trainer here. Not all ears back are actually pinned.. and of course there will be a subtle amount of crankiness whenever you are teaching difficult maneuvers to any horse. this horse & trainer are doing a great job.. the equipment is always only as harsh as the hands it is in. Good job w/the piaffe training! Just my $0.02.. lol

  • @battlingtheodds Ears back and erect mean she's alert to what her trainer is doing. If the ears were DOWN, she'd be angry and her movements would be more dramatic.

  • Rhytm and forwardness is always the most important thing in any exercise, even more in its beginning! Why are the classical principles of educating of the horses so neglected nowadays...? :(

  • Beautifull to watch.

    Dressage-arena (Hyves)

  • shame yourself to learn a horse to do something by using a wip that way..!!

  • She's a beauty!

  • what is the song by??

  • wow she is gorgeous! i have done reining and western pleasure, natural showmanship and halter classes, and i am thinking of also learning dressage with my instructor aswell...but great job she is doing great!

  • hi i love ur horse shes beautifull and has alot of tallent but i was wandering if u would no if it is okay if ur horse kicks out as a response to the dressage whip in piaffe training?

  • It is so nice to se a correct piaffe, when there are so many wrong ones showed here on youtube. The rhythm was so beautiful, it just made me smile and gives me much hope that there IS such a thing as good riding!

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW! Unbelievably difficult for the horse but yet so cool!

  • wow, just beautiful! She looks like an amazing mare!!

  • this is a beautiful horse, and he moves nice too but the frothy drool and unpleasant expression on his face makes me second guess...

  • In Dressage we like the frothy drool. :)

  • @cowgirl4lyfe999 Frothy drool is good! :) Means the horse is accepting contact and is mouthing the bit :)

  • beautiful!

  • What is the song?

  • that passage is beautiful! i love her movments and the trainer!

  • Wow amazing - What exctly are the aids for Piffe and Passage I know it takes a certain type of horse to get to this level and would love to know the exact aids to try and establish that movement if the right one come along. Thanks

  • So beautiful the last part! :D

I wish my horse could do that too..

  • ich schließe mich Westernreiten1 und Smile6556 absolut an. Sch*** Kandarre.

  • @westernreiten1 westerreiten is aber spass gel?

  • Wunderschön! Sehr konzentrierte Arbeit, toll!

  • die passage is wunderschön :)

  • Danke :)

  • Beurk !!!

  • The praise is so important otherwise they wont know when its right. however a small release of tension might be all she needs.......

  • You'll notice that the curb rein is always loose when he works with her and on her back. Thank you for your positive comment :)

  • Beautiful, you must be proud she's willing trying hard which obviously is a credit to the trainer as well :-)

  • super hübsches geiles Pferd, super knieaktion.......wunderschön

  • this was causing goose bumps! georgeous!

  • :-)

  • Instead of the music, it would be great to hear the trainer and what sounds they are making with the horse while training.

  • very nice but irritating music though!

  • hes a beautiful horse, he does that really well

  • very good training... Is she for sale?

  • nice horse

  • LOVE IT! exept the music

  • hamma !!!

  • Such natural animated movement, especially at 3:05-3:10. Lovely to watch! Great training, it's comforting to see how a tense horse is allowed practice a movement to become accustomed to it - the reality of training very gracefully and correctly handled. Brilliant mare.

  • hahaha, the trainer was tapping the whip in time to the beat of the song! nicee. very nicely done =)

  • it was a pleasure to watch that!

  • Its cool to see how they train them to do things like that :)

  • that is brilliant for mare who is just learning. really like this matt guy, he's very constant, but i really like that he gives lots of praise and lots of little breaks. and he's really cute :)

  • Awesome!

  • fabulous!!

  • Nice to see another tall rider. YES!!! Also very talented trainer and that was impressive WOW

  • yeah I definately agree, should stop and praise after a certain amount of good strides.

  • i agree entirely with stopping and praising as soon as you get a decent set of strides, its the only way to go but i love the fact he got this on so classically, and for a new horse her passage was excellent for classic dressage, some people should find out before they preach, this andi is excellent, i used to work a pre stallion like this, would again if i had the cash, well done keep it up

  • In my opinio he is a very very good rider.Aditionally he looks good:-). I like your style and your riding!

  • The piaffe is really good!!

    but passage could be better....

    5 stars!

    love the song - silence!!

    lol

  • hi i was woundering how you make a horse prance i cant make my morgan hors prance for some reson

  • Very good job, and wow a ,,REAL´´ Piaffe and Passage without Hyperflexion. GREAT

  • I know a fair share about horses, but may I ask why she is salivating so much after he mounts her? Is it because she is not used to that bit, or is that just natural for horses to do with the dressage bit?

    Thanks :-)

    ~BBR13~

  • The salivating is good, even if it seems like a lot; it means she is accepting of the bit.

  • Oh okay! Thanks for letting me know :-)

    ~BBR13~

  • Matt taps her, (he's not really hitting her), to keep her active and rhythmical.

  • Why he hit the horse, when it does the Passage and the Piaff so good?

  • Nice job. I am not a trainer, but a student of horsemanship. Having seen MANY trainers & training over the years, I find the easiest thing to do in H'manship is to find fault in someone else's methods. Everyone's a critic. In any case, the horse and trainer looked focused, but relaxed; good karma.

  • Can I ask why such a long period of work before the release... considering she is still so new with it. If horses learn by pressure release, how is making her do it for 45 seconds straight a release?

I just would have thought if she'd only done it 6 times, perhaps a dozen good steps then a pat would have been a better approach. I worry about frying their brains- if no release of pressure, then they get confused. Maybe I'm too much of a softy!

Love the passage she is showing.

  • Nice... But I would have made sure he put the stirrups up first. Many horses will cow kick at the whip if they get frustrated. I hoof through a stirrup can cause horrific injuries.

  • She is actually doing good, more self carriage than you can normally see.. BUT, you are saying again and again that she has only done this a few times before. Tell yourself that too, i think you are asking too much at once. You have some halts, but i think you should have let her walk freely a bit before you asked again. Like this, the milk acid won't get time to go out from the muscles, and the piaffe won't be fun to do anymore, cos it hurts, and will give training aches the next day.

  • Caranbee, i totally agree with you!

  • how do you train a horse to do that man!

    this is awsome

  • I truly appreciate everyone's comments and critiques on my mare and the work Matt is doing here with her. PLEASE keep in mind that this is lterally shot after the 6th time he's ever worked these movements with her. I've YET to see another horse do it PERFECT after 6 times. Keep your comments coming!!!

  • Nice but if I did this by my pony he was gone... He get nervous! And start to run...

  • Get out of the middle of that horses back, get her hind end underneath her self and make it as beautiful as the front end. You're missing one essential key.

  • Actually - imo, looks good period for only having done it a handful of times. :)

  • Looks good once he is in saddle.

  • I like how once she is reminded to stay active she really concentrates and becomes very animated. Beautiful! I also like the trainer's light hands.. good job!

  • really beautiful horse. whats the song called?

  • The song is "Silence", a Tiesto edit featuring Sarah Mclaughlan.

  • how much does it cost to have your horse trained to do piaffes?

  • Horse feels moving of the whip making rythm even in half a meter away from skin, through the slow wind from whip's movements felt by the keen horse skin

It is not necessary to slap the croup every time:)

  • Matt starts all his horses from the ground first.

  • Hello i am definitely not a expert in things like the piaffe and passage but i am trying to learn. I have watched workouts many times but i have a question. Do yu start off a horse riding him or on the ground like this video? Ive seen people start them on the saddle and i do not think it correct but im not sure.

  • WOW thats amazing eventhough shes learning!!

  • How do i start my horse off in that movement?

  • This is what I love about dressage the precise execution, the discipline, the beauty, learning true patience, its an amazing discipline.

Very nice work with Belleza, it needs work but she's shaping up nice and the passage is beautiful. Great work!

  • GORGEOUS

  • I have a question, I have a 4 yr old moresian gelding and I tried teaching piaffe in hand like you are doing but he likes to run me over instead of stay in one spot and in his own space. How do I stop this? Do all horses do this when they first start off?

  • lol. i think they all do that at first. lol. but keep trying, my coach trained her horse to do it by hand, and exactly the same thing happened- he is now at grand prix level, and is going perfectly!

  • her passage is very nice(= piaffe needs some work. beautiful mare

  • she is georgeouse - i love dressage - theres so much stuff you can do and its amazing that a horse can recognise what you ask of him, this realy makes you apreciate how complex it realy is...

  • Music is:

Delerium ft. Sarah McLachlan - Silence

  • my idiot of a cousin saw some videos of people working in hand on youtube and tried it out on his brand new gelding. He got trampled. XD.....well kinda anyway. The gelding got his foot fair and square.

    Anyway great vid. Awesome mare.

  • silence by delerium for those of you who were wondering about the music. gorgeous video!

  • Oh sorry forgot to ask if you can make a video showing how to get other movements? Like Half Pass, Canter Half Pass, Extended Trot, etc. We want more Matt!!!

  • Thanks Matt for making an instructional video to teach Piaffe and Passage!

  • hi, can you send me a link to the instructional videos plz

  • oo she is hating that whip but tries her heart out.. what a perfect mare

  • Who is the music by?

  • Who is the music by? Anypne know?

  • AMAZING!!

  • oh i love matt! i got a lesson with him this past december! it was so amazing! hes the best!!

  • she seems quite apprehensive about the whip being used, but she's trying so hard, what a sweet mare.

  • WOW

  • She is trying so hard to please, bless

  • Has anyone on here ever taught a AQHA to do this? Like the chunky halter type? I am just wondering if my mare is even physically capable of it before I try it. Its pretty awsome though I am definitly thinking about doing some english stuff and taking a break from cutting and reining!

  • yes, it is quite possible for an AQH to do this. the great thing about dressage, is that it is just a system of training and all horses are capable of it. just keep mind your mare's previous training and learn together. please, for the sake of your mare though ;) consult a trainer and not just this video! :) good luck!

  • Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame here. I have a yearling filly whos 100% foundation quarter horse...yet I'm a juper and I do dressage...

  • Yes, My first Grand Prix horse was a AQHA App. He could not only do Grand Prix Dressage, but also Airs above ground.

  • Piaffe is one of the most beautiful dressage moves ever! I wish my dressage horse could do that! :( anywase I really think he a good trainer, He seems very mute in emotions and very clam even though the horse isn't cute horse too!

  • I'll be seeing Matt in Harrisburg this weekend. I'm really looking foreward to it! It's just amazing what he does with these horses!

  • i saw him too! he actually helped me with a horse

  • ok but do you know how much it is

  • how do you teach a horse to do that my morgan mare doesnt get it when i tap her with my dressage whip on her bum?!

  • You start with one back leg at a time. You can order Matt's instuctional DVD; it's easy!

  • how do you teach the piaffe? it seems that you got faster results then the way that i learned, which i think may be the wrong way. holding the horse in and bumping your legs on his side with tapping the whip on his forelegs. it seems that you started from teh ground first. how did you teach that at the ground? then transfer that into the saddle? i am quite intersted to know. thank you.

  • Cute! Good trainging

  • Such a pretty horse. Looks awesome. I wish my horse could do that!

  • wot a beautiful horse, she is listening to you so intensly, she has a great future.

  • I think she looks really good! I remember seeing him during one of the Amercian Lippizan tours - he had a hole in his pants. Irrelevant, but there was a hole XD

  • great horse. great walk..

  • Her name in Spanish Means beauty right?

  • Beautiful horse!

  • beutiful horse

    what gait is it?

    Is she a lipizzaner/

    Heard those were rare!!!

  • Thank you. The song is "Silence", a Tiesto edit featuring Sarah Mclaughlan.

  • love the mare..great work...what is the name of the song and singer for this video? It would be perfect for my GP free style.

    Cheers

  • Not with a Spanish horse it doesn't - Doesn't hurt to have Matt doing the training either. Thanks for the video - many don't get the opps to see great trainers at work with good horses. Few only get to see the finished product. Many think it's easy. Kudos.

  • Love the mare. great work...what is the name of the song and singer...this would be perfect for the combo i am putting together for my GP free style.

    Cheers!

  • Loved the vid. post more. and keep us up to date with the horses progress. maybe some of us can learn from this thanks again

  • Thank you for all the interest and the comments! Matt has been out of town for 2 weeks, but once he gets back and begins working with her again, I will be filming her progress.

  • she seems really eager and listening to his every word...just my 2 cents

  • Continued. Under saddle one has to be careful to not use the whip (due to habit) always on one side, you 'can' create a hitch that way.

  • Only in my opinion, horse training comes in many varieties. Just realize how many people train horses, meaning how many different ways exist to train the exact same 'movement'. I command the horse for its adaptability....continued below

  • Anybody can train the piaffe - "dance in place", but how efficiently is the horse using itself in order to create an athlete who will be able to execute these movements with ease and endurance, and feel comfortable and happy. Too many horses are sore, and show their discontent clearly. ...continued below

  • Sadly this is widely accepted as "normal" or excused with ex: 'mare-ish behavior'. Time, depends on proper training methods and the horses ability and character. A horse needs to be able to properly engage and gather (collection)-using the abs and be connected from head to tail (simply put). ...continued below

  • I realize this horse has only been working for a short while on this, but you can already see the typical evasive behaviors, hollow back, even in-hand. The Passage is very strung out, and many trainers believe this is a minor detail, but proper engaging of those muscles will prevent this. We don't teach our children Calculus before knowing what 2+2 is!

  • The person above is an idiot. Many trainers teach passage and piaffe this way you dumbass. The famous Lippizaner Stallions go through training similar to this.

  • 8 to 10 Sessions?

What are you doing? You can't tell people this...Do you have any idea how many "Dressage Trainers" that will be out of work if their clients find this out it doesnt take 10 years?
