  • Last time I saw the Broderick Smith band playing this was at the Western Port Hotel at San Remo,Victoria. Partied well with the band

  • On Ya Red

  • I met Broderick Smith in about 1980 when I was 17 at a friend's house who was a sound engineer in a recording studio. He was so nice to a shy, stammering teenager!! I heard his single 'Faded Roses' at that house before it hit the radio stations. Loved it then and love it now!!!

  • redo dog brought me hear

  • yes haha red dog rocks

  • @libertine234 sure am.

  • @libertine234 what the hell i said that first

  • I remember the singer wearing a harmonica belt. Which I had never seen before. It must a held half a dozen harmonicas or so. I also remember the drummer had his snare drum positioned very low, like almost down to his ankles. Great show and great memories.

Had to special order the CD through Street Light Records.

  • @mrjbkap is the drummer in this film clip Steve Prestwich?

  • I I first heard the Dingos on KSAN radio out of San Francisco. I think the song was Smooth Sailing. Was able see the Dingo’s back in the late 70’s or early 80’s at a small night club called The Old Waldorf in the San Francisco Financial District. I think it was on Battery street. The place was owned by Bill Graham. Not a bad seat in the house and nothing but top acts. AC/DC, Meat Loaf, Eddie Money, Journey…Dingo’s.

  • Yep, loved this song again because of Red Dog and the lyrics are true Australian.

  • This American LOVES Australian music, the rest of USA don't know what there missing.

  • @aerowayne4 Good on ya mate!

  • This was almost superstar stuff...cant understand why Broderick didnt go bigtime...maybe his name and personality...I loved this song...but didnt go much on him later at the time...who knew

  • MY SCIENCE TEACHER IS THE BASSIST :D

  • @gflores866 Then you should also check out YouTube videos of a band called Country Radio, as John Bois also played in that band.

  • Anyone else listening to this because of Red Dog?

  • @EddytheGurn nope, grew-up with this band

  • Effin' great song. Original. Love it. Thanks for posting . From the old Aussie.

  • still one of my favourites.great stuff

  • this was better than anything back in the 70s going on in the USA or Europe

  • @beyondalohas yeah sure!!!....you're a funny guy. I know you guys are isolated down under but come on! really? I know this statement is that goofy sense of aussie humor, right? I see the charm in the tune as well, but if this is better than anything abroad, yikes!!

  • Honest,Quality,Great.!!

  • I'm wtfing at the fact that John Bois is my Bio Professor O_o

  • and sooo sexy!!!

  • Wow! This is great! I've never seen this before (a little before my time but...) this guy had a voice!!!! I appreciate Aussie rock and blues.... :)

  • 3 people don't appreciate fantastic Aussie rock..

  • Yep, Brod had and still has a brilliant voice. Chek out his appearance on Rockwiz doing a duet with Patience Hodgson. They did an MGMT song called Time To Pretend

The tribute album was either 79 or 1980...The Andy Durant Memorial concert

Brod had a residency at the Clifton Hill hotel in the early 90's. Brilliant nights they were

  • Used to follow them around Victoria in the early 70's Station Hotel Pahran, Narbethong Pub outside of Lillydale still sound great still rockin to there music.

  • loved this band wonderful music great strong voice

  • One of the many great bands - have the album they did - great listening every few years - Carson were also great listeing

  • When I was young I destroyed an LP copy of The Dingoes that belonged to my dad. He was quite pissed off for a long time and constantly reminded me about it. It's only been last year that I found a replacement copy for him (22 years later roughly) After I bought it I realised it had been signed by Broderick Smith. Found another copy a few months later and just had to get it for myself. Great album.

  • Thanks for these gems, nzoz, some great aussie classics here!!!!!

  • Broderick & the guys were just FANTASTIC last week at Adelaide's Norwood Hotel. The band were top notch, Broderick's pipes are as good as ever plus they are just good, down to earth Aussies. I'm so rapt I was able to witness Oz Country Rock Royalty. IAN, Victor Harbor.

  • these men obviously have drunk too much milo

  • reminds me of James Reyne from aussie crawl

  • Brings back great memories grooving to the Dingoes at the Station Hotel. Was the best times.

  • Saw them re formed last night. Man they were so good

  • excellent!

  • First album in years this year 2010..and touring...woo hoo

  • @danlyons45 Going to see them at the Hunter Valley next week. Can't wait!!!!!!!!

  • Great song and this is the first time I've seen the clip. Thank you

  • Brings back great memories. Loved this band! Thanks for making this available!

  • brucewillott@hotmail.com

  • the life!

  • great aussie band... Shame they broke up so early.. they've would've been huge. Brod is an under rated aussie singer... the only artist to play at all Sunbury music festivals.

  • Could you have any better memories than these.

  • Glad to see Broderick is still performing today sounding better than ever!!

  • i love this song... and as soon as i could when i left school back then i followed...

  • A teacher at my school is the bass player!

  • He looks sorta like Brad Pitt.

  • I live way out West...It's funny I have loved this song from when I was a little girl and always thought they wrote it for us In WA...either way we do make some really great music and the bands have survived the test of time...Great name for a band too :) love from Downunder xx

  • first time hearing this song. I really like them. thanks gar.......

  • smile Broderick smile lol

    cool voice though!

  • excellent!

  • Comment removed

  • The original and the best.

  • @aussiegoosebumps My wife & Myself saw Broderick with someone else, whom i cannot remember their name. This must have been in the 60's i think.

He sang amongst other tunes the Roy Orbison number LEAH,which he performed magnificently.

Before he sang it,he said that it would be a bit of a BALL BUSTER as the last few notes were in such a high register.

I will always remember this until i drop dead & i would personally like to thank Broderick for that experience

  • So Australian......

  • @carpetcle I like it. there is lot of American music like this

  • I have never been out of Australia, I guess it would relate to many countries with similar countrysides......

  • @carpetcle I have traveled from end to end of your great country and I love the place. This is the first time I HAVE HEARD THIS SONG. And I relate more to the story of the song then the similar countysides. It,s a great song and I can,t believe that I never heard it in my travels to Australia. Australia is the only country I will travel too and I have been there 3 times. THE last time in 93 I was there for 5 months. the time of my life.

  • Such a talented band. Forever an Aust icon but should have been more. If you can get some of their albums grab them and listen to some great songs

  • this version is much BETTER than the newer one!!

  • Used to see Brod Smith play in the front bar at The Governor Hotham in Hawthorn in the early 80's. Still some of the most enjoyable gigs I have ever seen.

  • The Governor Hotham changed its name to "The Hawthorn" and it now officially sucks.

  • I know. Shame, it was a great freindly pub back in the day.

  • These guys played with AC/DC when they first started at the hard rock cafe in melbourne

  • Biology Teacher bassist.

  • hope you belt that one out tomorrow night kerin with mum and julie in the crowd cheering and singing along

  • John Bois!!! holy shit!!!!

    Northwestern High School!!!

  • This is one of the great aussie songs of the 70's. The more uptempo version only keeps getting better too. Broderick Smith is a genius.

  • Anbody got Faded Roses or My Fathers Hands by Broderick Smiths Big Combo?

  • Comment removed

  • it is so cool cause my teacher is one of the dingo members :D

  • Congratulations Dingos for the ARIA Hall of Fame

  • Dingoes were deservedly inducted into the ARIA hall of fame, well done!

  • The Dingoes must have recorded a few versions of this - I had access to an up-tempo version I believe was released for USA - it was superb (and without the la-las from memory) !!! I clocked up many, many hundreds of miles driving throughout Queensland, working on construction sites and cattle stations, listening to this song. It is probably my favourite song of this era, because I was often living this sort of life, saving to put myself through University.

    Cheers. :-)

  • it sounds creedence to me.

  • That's Australian Music Hall of Famer and Biology teacher extraordinaire John Du Bois on bass! Get funky with it! Congratulations Dingoes! Once a Wildcat always a Wildcat....

  • God am I that old. Broderick Smith one of Austs great song wrieters. I bought lots of your songs inthe 80s. beautiful songs I will surrender everything including debt!!! Take me to the poor house!!

  • Something of Canned Heat about this song...

  • Is he singing with a U.S. accent?

  • Yep

  • Self-titled album is being remastered and re-released next month through Warner Music - will sound awesome...

  • Man, he sure can sing! Natural raw voice.

  • Martini's Carlton 1975...What a hoot!

  • It doesn`t bear thinking about what would have happened if Brod had walked into a bar way out west wearing that jacket back in the 70s! Seriously tho` thanks for uploading this clip. The song is as wonderful now as it was when it was written. A true Australian classic.

  • Yep that's the one. Someone would have the vhs vid of that concert which was a commercial release.

Imagine the clips you could pull off that one...

  • Damn, Brod had a gr8 voice. Used to roadie for a band called Carson which he was in before this band(I think it's before..it's along time ago...lol).

He did some classic stuff on a tribute album in the 80's to a guy songwriter who died...double album with Renee Geyer an Barnsie and Clapton an a host of big names from those times...

    Brilliant voice

  • The guy being Andrew Durant from Stars.

  • @nzozearly1970s Saw them at the Basement (Sydney) last night. Absolutely brilliant! Kick arse and tight as a drum. Still has a great voice and Keiran Tolhurst just amazing on the slide guitar. Catch them if you can.

  • @nzozearly1970s They were a great band, we used to see them at the Narrabeen Antler with Mal Eastick on lead and Andy on rhythm, what a shame he succumbed to cancer.

  • @nzozearly1970s Andrew Durant died some years back from a tumor in the neck sad loss

  • the andrew durant memorial concert

  • The guy you referred to was Andrew Durant who was guitarist for a 70's band known as The Stars.

  • @culmie i got the first origanal carson album and live at sunberry love em:D

  • I used to see Broderick Smith every week at my local the Clifton Hill Hotel in Melbourne, didn't realise he did this song. How Awesome! Classic.

  • Of which i have updated a clip yesterday of B-S singing Ocean Deep

  • The vocals seem a little rough n raw in this version, and I like that, but., unfortunately, the recording quality doesn't seem to be too good here. Perhaps this copy of the video was warbling. There seems to be a 1973/1974 version and a 1977 version. Are either of them this exacting version? I'm thinking that this one is really live and not lip synced, but I hope I'm wrong, as this is the version I want to track down.

  • The guy has a nice voice, a natural singer.

  • cougar1233--i have something natural too cootie, lets get together again this week k

  • Saw the Dingo's in San Francisco at a Club called The Old Waldorff which was owned by Bill Ghram. Must of been 1974 ish. I was about 19 or so. Sorry for the spelling. Best so is Smooth Sailing. I picked up a cd by these guys several months ago. Man, this takes me back to my rock n roll roots.

  • very distinctive voice.....great song ...

  • As much as I love Blundell and Reyne, Brod's version wins every time!!

  • this is like Blundell's version done in slow motion.

  • The singing is great. And the drummer, he don't miss a beat!

  • This is a truly great Aussie band. I was lucky enough to see them live! Good

  • straddie! there is no better version of this song what are you thinking ya great idgit!!

  • thanks for calling me a great idgit and not just an idgit,at least LampoCastor knows what iam talking about cheers......

  • Great tune.

  • i think there was a better version of this song on 5 times the sun, i dont know help me out i think it was more up beat

  • Yeah you're right. They re-recorded it for Five Times The Sun, (great album). This is a good version but I reckon the version on Five Times The Sun has the edge.

  • The Dingoes deserved more than they got

  • I really like group. Love this song! The singer is fantastic! Singers today ain't even close, and the music ain't close either!

Thanks for posting! Would love to see more of this group!

  • Another Classic Aussie band.

    Love it to bits!

  • This band was destined for greatness. They had lined up gigs in the USA backing up Lynrd Skynrd (however you spell it)... the plane crash ended that dream.

  • Bastards...

  • I like it. I never listened it before and I don´t knew about this band. Relaxxxxxxx.

    Watch my videos.

  • Fan Bloody Tastic !!!!!

  • Thank you soooooooooooo much for posting!

  • Never did make it on to Napster

  • jon lee on drums

  • That most certainly is Jon Lee. I've known him since he ran with Harvey back in the days when we all hung out in Dandenong and Oakleigh.

  • Whoops!! spelling error. Guy not gay.

  • Great memories of Brod and Carson at Garrison in Prahan in 1972.Dingos were set to back LYNYRD SKYNYRD on tour before fateful plane crash.

  • It isnt Barry Sullivan playing bass its John Du Bois. Barry never played in the Dingoes

  • HE's MY BIOLOGY TEACHER!!!

  • The best version!!!!

  • What do you mean best version - live on Getting To Know, or did someone else do this song? I thought it was an original

  • James Reyne did a version in 1992(with James Blundell) - it was good - in fact it was very good - but this is better.

  • Aah. Thanks. must look for it. Have you noticed the stingy no. of hits to this page? The web might have a lot of information but unless you know what to ask for you can miss the best of it :)

  • nice!

  • Brings back memories, good song, sung by a good singer!

  • Written by Brodrick Smith. Hit early 1974.

Used to see them and The Little River Band play at The Station Hotel Greville street Prahran in Melbourne on Saturday arvos.

Smith was also in the band Carson circa 1971/73

  • Also written by Kerryn Tolhurst.

  • Was Broderick Smith the singer with a band called Carson in the early seventies?

Sounds like their music and it is good.

  • Yes, Smith was with Carson. Kerryn Tolhurst keyboards) was previously with Country Radio. Carson were a boogie outfit, the Dingoes more resembled Country Radio in style but Booderick's voice is unmistakeable.

  • Dingoes had a few different lineups ... that is Mal Logan on keys and if i am not mistaken Barry Sullivan (Big Goose - Chain) on bass ... great band and lets keep the aussie 70s music alive ... awesome

  • Kerryn played mandolin, slide and guitar, not keyboards. He was with Country Radio also, as well as John Du Bois (i think)

  • Great tune. Lots of Van Morrison influence.

  • Nice tune. Reminds me a lot of Van Morrison, however.

  • Great Video. I think you'll find that Kerryn Tolhurst wrote "All fired Up", not Brod. Brod though has written some great songs. Kerryn is a highly regarded record producer now I think based in New York.

    Cheers

    Rooster

  • Thanks for posting this, I'm going to watch some more of your videos. :)
