Rats are generally good swimmers (especially as babies) but until they are very used to the water they are justifiably scared of it. This vid reminds me of my little guy House as a baby.

rats do love to swim... but try to give him/her somewhere where they can sit out of the water and go back in when they like... i know i personally wouldn't like to be forced to swim (eventhough i enjoy it)

TheYellowtulip, no offence but i disagree, if a rat has been introduced to shallow water where it is able to touch the bottom with both front and back legs it should be ok with more deep water after all they are natural swimmers (: i have two of my own btw :)
I think the water should be more shallow enough for the front legs to touch the bottom. It is hard for it to stand with its back legs for too long, it needs to rest once in a while on all four feet.
That rat is adorable, but like people are saying the rat doesnt look like its enjoying the water too much. Even though people assume rats swim in water, live in sewers, exc. Remember, PET rats are NOTHING like WILD rats. Just as the dog was bred from the wolf, PET rats were bred from WILD rats. So although wild rats may be fine with swimming in sewers, but pet rats hate water, and since they're very clean animals, cleaning themselves often they shouldn't need a bath

No, some rats LOVE the water. Mine did. Would just lounge around in a little pool I made for him out of an old glass pie pan. He was also a great swimmer.

Aww, i discovered the other week that one of my rats cant swim. I usually bath them in a bucket but because the bath tub was full aleady i just put them in there. The little one was swimming around fine but the big one just sank so i had to hold him up the whole time.
Yeah, it's not a himalayan like it says in the text - himis don't have the coloured spot at the root of the tail, they just have the one on the nose. Siamese have both spots =)
mean would have been making the water too deep for him to stand. as long as he can stand, he has the ability to jump out at any time. it is VERY rare, but there are rats that enjoy the water, sometimes so much that their human has to keep the toilet seat down to stop them from jumping in during free roam time. this rat is lucky to have a human who loves him enough to let him enjoy his passion for swimming. he is so handsome too.

My 2 old rats hated bath times!! But sometimes they just needed a good clean, they pooped so much whilst I was bathing them!
I'll have to see what my 2 new ones think of the water!

mean would have been making the water too deep for him to stand. as long as he can stand, he has the ability to jump out at any time. it is VERY rare, but there are rats that enjoy the water, sometimes so much that their human has to keep the toilet seat down to stop them from jumping in during free roam time. this rat is lucky to have a human who loves him enough to let him enjoy his passion for swimming. he is so handsome too.

if he didnt like being in there he would jump out if he hated it that much , because bath tubs arent that high , becuase my rats hate water & they always jump out & its not high for them at all .

i think, this rat likes water. it's true, some rats like water some rats don't. My rat ketchup(he died a month ago=() didn't liked water. my rat joey loves water. he's also jumping into the water!=)he was also acting like that and i also though he wants to get out, but when i put him out the water, he jumped into it again!XD it was so funny

He not trying to get out, if he wanted to I would have got him out and rats are very good swimmers. Not all rats like it and like I said he was the only one that enjoyed it.

Not all rats hate water! I had a couple of rats who LOVED water.If this rat hated it,he would of been jumping to try and get out or climbing up the owner's arm!

Are you sure that rat was having fun? seriously-Looked like he wanted out..I would believe he liked it only if there was an island he could access, and still decided to stay in the water. That just looked unkind. He could not escape?

I know my rats and he was perfectly fine in there and if he wanted to get out he would have jumped up the side of the bath or scrambled up my arm like the others did.

LOL Thats so cute! My rat Jade will stand in shallow water to eat peas but will NOT take a bath LOL All of my rats hate baths. Once I made the mistake of washing 5 of them together. Never again.

Hi I didn't get him to like water :-) he was just the only one out of 9 that liked water.
You could keep trying them water, such as try pea fishing in a small tray to get them use to water
