What do snakes have anything to do with worship of the Lord. I don't recall any lesson in my UPC Pentecostal church about handling snakes in a form of worship. This is like murder they are holding snakes and making other do it and 60 something have DIED this is just pure ignorance not worship.

There is a noted accidental confrontation between the Apostle Paul and a snake, but after the snake bit him, he shook the snake off into a fire and the poison did not effect him...

Granted, odds are it did envenomate Paul, given Luke's description of when it struck and how it held onto his hand. Unless it injected all of its venom into some prey before striking Paul.

There are so many people today that CLAIM to be christians, that get more excited about a ball game than they do church & then criticize those who do worship God enthusiastically; not all christians handle snakes, of course, but these people are doing what God has called THEM to do & it is biblical. I am a huge advocate of church attendance, THIS IS THE EXCEPTION!! If you're watching this and not a Christian, don't judge this misguided UNSCRIPTURAL STUPIDITY to identify with Christianity. No where in the Bible does it advocate such a practice, Mark's Gospel reference has nothing to do with what they Practice. Think about the deeper implications of snake handling. Let's say someone truly believes in God and Christ. They show up to church one day, began to handle the snakes, and the snake bites and kills them. They will then be seen as someone who did not truly believe what they said they believed.

Mark 16:17-18 speaks of, they will take up serpants ( means, to put away demons spirits, has nothing to do with reptiles), and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them (speaks of protection; in no way does it speak of purposely drinking poison, etc., in order to prove one's faith; the word, "if," speaks of accidental ingestion).

It's funny most bibles will note that the last part of Mark 16 (the part that includes the portion where it says you can pick up serpents and not be bit) isn't found in the earliest manuscripts and may have been added by later sources.

the bible is not saying to run out and grab the first serpent you see or gulp down a glass of hemlock! Many people take this verse (Mark 16:18) out of context with some very deadly results. In Georgia for example, there are many that dance around with serpents because of this verse. The Bible states very plainly "...Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." [Matthew 4:7]

Mark 16 is one of the most clearest scriptures you can read. Jesus bluntly and flat out says if you believe in my name you Shall take up serpents "snakes" He didn't leave room for any other conclusion of the matter He was very clear on this point. Freehandling venomous snakes is extremely dangerous. Many of these people won't even go to a hospital when they get bit as they think of that as "not trusting god".
These people also give a bad name to any legitimate keepers of venomous snakes. Every time some crazy person like these gets bit new laws are made that completely ban the keeping of these beautiful reptiles, even from those who do have the experience and facilities to keep them.
James 1:13 says you cant temp God, Serpent handling is right. If you cant handle them, then dont lay hands on the sick or try to cast out devils, because it comes from the same scripture.

Mark 16:17-18 does not urge these dangers, it merely declares us victors over such things. It says that we wont die when poisoned. not to chug poison.

I was up in Jolo about 3 weeks ago and I visited with these people, and I have never felt more welcome anywhere than I did there. They were nice to me. I felt like some of the visitors did not treat them with the respect they deserve, The power of GOD was there, Hope to go back next year (If not before) These people have something that I really need. I am a Christian Pentcostal and will say that toying with snakes and poison is nothing more than ignorance. There is nowhere is the Bible where the act of handling snakes is actually used to worship God. There is a noted accidental confrontation between the Apostle Paul and a snake, but after the snake bit him, he shook the snake off into a fire and the poison did not effect him...

@kelckeri That event can be explained with a dry bite. Though the species that bit Paul was likely more venomous than the common European adder, it was still capable of delivering a dry bite. Granted, odds are it did envenomate Paul, given Luke's description of when it struck and how it held onto his hand. Unless it injected all of its venom into some prey before striking Paul.
By the way, snakes have been extirpated from Malta, possibly because of the snake that bit Paul.

Think about the deeper implications of snake handling. Let's say someone truly believes in God and Christ. They show up to church one day, began to handle the snakes, and the snake bites and kills them. They will then be seen as someone who did not truly believe what they said they believed.

I got ten bucks that says that if they did this with my harmless Boas or worse, Inland Taipans, they'd get bitten...repeatedly. Taipans don't care about g_d. They care about eating, mating and not being handled or provoked. And they will strike in excess of 5 times when handled, will dump venom with each bite and chances are better than not that you will die unless you are near a hospital.

It's funny most bibles will note that the last part of Mark 16 (the part that includes the portion where it says you can pick up serpents and not be bit) isn't found in the earliest manuscripts and may have been added by later sources.

Mark 16 is one of the most clearest scriptures you can read. Jesus bluntly and flat out says if you believe in my name you Shall take up serpents "snakes" He didn't leave room for any other conclusion of the matter He was very clear on this point. So if we are true believers then we should obey our Lord. We shouldn't pick and choose the Word.

I'm a liberal atheist and I think this is really cool. At least they put their "money where their mouth" is so to speak-they put their faith up against a real threat to the lives. The only other ones I have any respect for is Christian Scientists who will not even use medicine, THATS hardcore. The other religions use all matter of scientific wonders to keep themselves from dying, why is that? Shouldn't every religious person want to die ASAP? Oh well, much respect for the people of Jolo WV.

Why aren't these people drinking poison also? It's in the same bible verse as the snake handling part. It's one thing to play with snakes and not get bitten and say it's from God but I doubt anyone of these people could gulp down a bottle of strychnine and not drop over dead

I was up in Jolo about 3 weeks ago and I visited with these people, and I have never felt more welcome anywhere than I did there. They were nice to me. I felt like some of the visitors did not treat them with the respect they deserve, The power of GOD was there, Hope to go back next year (If not before) These people have something that I really need. I fear GOD too much to badmouth them!!!!!

Why not stick with the original texts? unless free masons over many years have changed things while ajoined by the hand of satan. Too much proof out there!
