it is a speaker, i have 3.5 inch speakers that im adding ontop of my other speakers, but you can pretty much consider them tweeters

basically the difference is the size and frequency responce. Tweeters are smaller usually about an inch and pick up high frequencies. Mid range speakers like your 4.5 5.25 and 6 inch speakers pick up your middle range frequencies. 6x9 speakers pick up the majority of your mid and low frequencies. it's better to have each speaker for each range then to push one speaker to do all three and overload it, because all thats going to do is cause it to be distorted.
