I am a former Canadian Submarine Captain. I took a Yamaha DX27 to sea with me and would on occasion use it when conducting torpedo attacks during NATO exercises. I would connect the instrument to the Underwater Telephone and transmit two notes similar to the theme song of Jaws just before giving the Attack Signal. In the voice of The Shadow I would give an evil laugh followed by "Who knows what evil lurks in the deep dark depths...callsign Mike Three Charlie knows..." :-)
So I got a DX27 about 6 years ago for free from a friend. I never used it. I just started to really look into it and I enjoy it simply because it has different sounds than my other pieces of kit. I have been using my Roland and my Korg so much that it is refreshing hearing Yamaha sounds. Plus I like that fact that it has a data sliders and a modulation wheel. They help when using it midi connected to other synths.
The dx27 has only 4 operators vs 6 operators in the dx7. You won't find the typical dx7 piano in the dx27. Although the dx27 is a great fm synth, capable of some nice and weird sounds. I like it because of the funky sounds and leads. good luck finding a nice fm synth.
funky playin' believe it or not i play that way, too :)

Hello all good friends and since I am user of the motif xs
and now I'm also getting a DX 27, I wonder
if DX has the same Synthese of DX7 (the electric pianos
etc.), I await your reply, Thank you. Eric

Thank you for your comment. It's filmed with my telephone.. just a quick demo, nothing special. In the future i will record it with better audio.
