As a missionary kid, I've moved over and over and over again. When I first heard this song several months ago, I fell in love with it! I think Sara must have wrote it for me specifically! It's the most incredible song! I love it!
The Jews in the Old testament did not have Jesus! The contrast between the way God dealt with the Jews in the OT and the grace, love, forgiveness of Jesus in the NT helps us see what a gift we have through Jesus Christ and a life in Him, through Him, reconciled in our relationship to God. I love this song and totally relate to the struggle between the worlds ways/old life and walking toward our new life in Christ. At times I've felt stuck between the old and new...choose Him with each step!
The song ends with "If it comes too quick, I may not appreciate it, that the reason behind all this time and sand...and If it comes too quick, I may not recognize it, that the reason behind all this time and sand..." Well, in the passage, the reason was not "to build character" but rather "to execute those who sinned" (and to give them a chance to provide a replacement generation). Even in the NT, God's slogan is "The beatings will continue until morale improves!"
@WoundedEgo You misunderstand the principals of scripture. The Old Testament was a shadow of things to come, our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ, who is the promise. In the Old Testament, God delt with the nation of Israel, but now through the New Testament, God deals with individuals as He did the Nation of Isreal in the Old Testament. The death of the old generation is typical of the need for our unbelief to die before we can enter the fulness of the promise in Christ.
@mjeffreyl1 Actually, I understand it just as the author of Hebrews did:
Heb 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
And Paul - see 1 Cor 10:1-13: 1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
@Jesusworshipper4eva God has a funny way of showing the Jews he loves them. It seems like on every page he's maligning them, threatening them and punishing them. I don't know which is more anti-Jewish... the OT or the NT?
But all the Jews, including Moses, wandered in the desert for forty years, and died before they ever got to the promised land. God was "ticked off" at them because they murmured, and at Moses for hitting the rock.
@WoundedEgo God wasnt mad at them. Sin has a gravity affect. They chose not to fallow God; they were too afraid of the Giants in the Promised land, so they ended up in the wilderness. And disobedience can cause everything you have to be lost. Its a lesson for all of Us. Gods not Evil, He's the boss. Whatever He says goes, and if we refuse, the devil gets to take everything from us because When we sin, we put a barrier up between ourselves & God, so we dont have His covering. Its all up to us.
@Jesusworshipper4eva My point is that the 40 years were not a difficult time but a punishment designed to ensure that they all died in the wilderness and never saw the promised land. (Moses was allowed to see it, but not to enter). Check it out.
@WoundedEgo I understand the Story, and I believe Sin has precautions, Moses disobeyed God so He didnt get to go in. But the Fact that the Israelites were stuck in the Wilderness speaks to how we as Modern day Christians turn away from God and get stuck somewhere. I think Each generation has something that the world needs that the previous couldnt bring. Moses's left their bondage, but wimped out later. Joshua's marched forth into God's plan and destiny. I believe thats who we are to be
The A of G girl from Minnesota from 2002 who was first known for "The Word" through three albums into 2007 was the poet laureate of Christian music with her deep, challenging lyrics that was in the same category as Margaret Becker, Carolyn Arends, Rich Mullins, Phil Keaggy, Michael Card and Amy Grant (LMO) The greatest truth in this song is "caught between the promise and the things I know". The future is unknown and sometimes very dreadful but you can either stay in the desert or go ahead.
Spiritually speaking -- I am from Heliopolis, making my way to New Jerusalem. I can definitely relate to this song, when the old allures present themselves so powerfully, but the reality of those allures are never what they pretend they will be because I know it is all bondage and lies now.
something about the video - feels like she's staring through you, combine that with the introspective lyrics, this song is almost 10 years old but still relevant! Should be on the radio more. We're doing this for special music at church this wk, and I'm excited to share it. I wish Sara was more popular in mainstream music - she deserves to be
@daverockgtrist Sara's popularity on the radio has more to do with how the program manager determines who airs by a cookie cutter format and less on how popular she actually might be. Even in her home town of Springfield, Mo. where she grew up and went to college they rarely play her and not nearly as much as she is played on WMBI in Chicago. My wife is from Springfield, and we know the family so we know the situation you refer to as well.
@daverockgtrist - I'm gonna say something a tad selfish, I'm kinda glad she's right where she is - it's like she's our best kept secret - y'know, a gem in the pocket. I'm glad we're not being od'ed on her music. She's a pleasure to listen to - profound lyrics and interesting instrumentation. She's a treat.
This is a powerful song that all Christians can identify with at some point in their journey. Sara is very insightful and God has obviously raised her up to bring encouragement to believers. The aspect of "time in sand" at the end of the song sheds light on why God's people spend seasons in the wilderness.
Sara, i went searching for you on Google after hearing "when the saints" a few times on KAPL (Applegate Christian Fellowship's radio station)...Today I found you and am so thankful!
This video was the first exposure I ever had to Sara. I KNEW I had to find out about her. Now all this time later, she has provided years of inspiration and a lot of wonderful tunes for me to sing about the house.
I discovered this song right at the end of the time when I still considered myself "Christian." Even though I'm long past that stage of my life now, I still own this song and think it's beautiful and very applicable to anyone facing changes in life. Love it!
Wow, thanks to "God4Ever100's" comments, I really get this now. The Jews are facing the prospect of 40 years in the wilderness, and suddenly bondage in Egypt looks comparatively comfortable, despite that God has set them free.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think that possibly the point of this song is that she has unfulfilled longings. Kind of like her heart is crying out, "I'm not trying to be unspiritual - I'm just sexually frustrated." It's truly a sad, beautful song.
Sarah groves is a wonderful and faithful Christian. She has a beautiful voice and a wonderful heart. I wish I were just like her. I wish I was as faithful a Christian as her, and forget that! I wish I was this woman's identical twin sister!
ck. Please be careful of idolizing someone. I'm sure if you talked to Sara she would tell you, "be like Jesus". That's all she can do. He's our perfect example. And you have to be you. And God can use you if you keep focused on Him. What you do (for God) may not be out there for everyone to see like Sara, but God will see it, and that's what counts. God bless you girl!!!
The Jews were delivered from the Pharoh in Egypt but they longed for the familiar. They believed they were better off in bondage. That's what this song is about.
We also believe our old way of life is better but it's just bondage. God was liberating them as He liberates us today.
@WoundedEgo God loves the Jews. In the Word of God, He calls them His Chosen People. Its like a Father and His Children, when your Children Disobey, you must reprove them. Simple as that. And let me tell you friend, God is love, If Christians truly love God they are more like Him than ever. Because He's not evil.
thsi song really ministers to me :)
