I support my local music scene, but that's about it. I go to pretty much every show I can here. I don't have enough cash to pay for all the music I want, but most of the music I download now-a-days is either from bands that aren't around anymore or have their stuff up for free somewhere. I do try to spread the word about bands that I like whenever possible, though. So I do support bands, just not monetarily (unless I am buying merch or watching them perform).
I for one love having physical copies of albums I really like. I bought all the albums of the artists I really like this year simply out of support. I make music too, and when I do charge for an album I would want people to buy it to support not just simply download it.
I definitely support music when I can. I use youtube to listen to a couple tracks from an album that I am thinking of buying, and if I like what I hear, then I will buy the album.
You have to invest in what you love. Artists need money in order to make music, so if you love someone's music, you should naturally support them so they can make more music.
I feel just feel that holding a vinyl record feels so much better, it feels like you actually physically own that tune. Furthermore, whenever you just dished out a fair amount of money to for the physical analogue vinyl release, you're going to pay attention to every single detail in that tune. I find that whenever I illegally download albums, they're just albums that I listen to a couple of tracks from, and then forget about forever, the album doesn't mean anything like having an album on vinyl
I posted my opinion on this topic six months ago. The fact that this video remains in my memory and on my mind says something. I want to thank you, not only for making it, but also for avoiding taking the approach of an attack. Hopefully, this video will cause viewers to think about the results of their actions (as opposed to just defensively trying to justify them).
Although I don't always buy CD's or records, I do support an artist if I really enjoy it, or I like their album artwork. I find lots of hard copies of music come with really nice art that a jpeg from the internet doesn't feel the same as.
I should say though, I support music. If I like an artist (after illegally downloading their album), when the next one comes out, I will buy it and then listen to it for the first time. Pity the next album never ends up being as good as the album I illegally downloaded. But I often go back and buy albums that I have illegally downloaded if I really think that that was the album that deserved my money.
i literally started playing this video then clicked over to another tab to download Teebs' Collections 01 illegally. I feel bad. But i did see him live a while back. But the ticket was cheap.
I buy a lot of CD's and buy a lot of records, but mainly because I feel that a piece of art deserves respect when I listen to it, or if it's a film, view it. And to me, respect means that when I put it on, I have to hold the album in my hands, I have to set the mood, I have to absorb the artwork, I have to put the disk into the try or the record onto the turntable, and then I have to sit and appreciate it from start to finish. Money doesn't come into it for me. Art transcends money.
What about artists I would love to support, such as Jimi Hendrix, but are dead....? I never really thought of the "voting" idea you came up with but that is a perfectly accurate way to describe it. Love your channel.
I buy album's that are essential to me. I download everything else. I only have 65 cd's in my collection but each one means something to me and is great in my eyes. I don't ever regret buying music or a movie because I know the money would just otherwise be spent on dope. It's really nice having something to show for your money, especially if it's a sweet music collection.
20 years from now pretty much all the non major record labels will be dead and actual artists (not pop stars) will be relying on the internet and word of mouth to get their music out to the mass
I support music and I have to admit that I do get music for free, but its not because I don't want to go out and buy albums. I just don't have enough money to do so as a young adult still in high school and without a job.
I download a lot of albums, but that's because I LISTEN TO very much music, and I couldn't afford all of it. I can barely afford one album a month.
But I give every single album my personal ratings, and I buy those that gets the highest rating. I don't buy vinyls though... Don't have a... vinyl-player'ish-thing?
Money is hard and it always has been. Being 15 without a job and relying on your allowance a month later is hard. I do buy albums but what do you do when your wallet is collecting dust and you rely on parents to do everything.
Same here. I almost always buy music, but I've downloaded some when I had no money. But even then I felt guilty, and a few months later (when I had money) I bought it.
I buy some cds, but i download usually, the trouble i find with cds is so many artists today are a product rather than an artist. I think when it becomes about the money, artists lose sight of their true expression, take the velvet underground for example, they created very little buzz, and due to the lack of money they were making, went off and released loaded, not that it was horrific, but i find if you stop conforming to trends to make money, music is much more ... just more.
I love Vinyl. I love the size, bigger pictures, better art. I also love the quality. It's a nice soft sound. Any album that I really like, I try to buy on Vinyl.
I personally think it involves a change in consciousness in the way music is perceived. Music is now perceived as something that is free and paying is like making a donation to the band. Albums cost thousands of dollars in recording time, instruments, man hours and people don't acknowledge that any more. So if you think about it, not paying for music is genuinely stealing and until this consciousness that music is free changes then people will keep downloading.
Oh and as an added note, whenever a band that I like swings through town, I almost ALWAYS end up buying something while I'm at the concert. Be it a t-shirt of theirs, an album, or in the case of an Opeth concert I went to, an awesome zippo lighter with a green flame ;D
When maudlin of the Well put out their album "Part the Second", it was entirely fan funded so they made the album free to download and there actually isn't any hard copy version of the album other than a vinyl record released in a limited quantity (500, I was lucky enough to purchase one). HOWEVER, they have a paypal account set up on their website for donations, if you appreciated the work, so I donated. I wish more bands would take donations, I'd gladly throw some money their way.
ill get an album, sit there and enjoy the hell out of it for months. when you pay for an album that youve been waiting to get it means alot more to you. As opposed to downloading 3000 songs in a sitting because u like the album artwork. music in bulk means little to the soul, but having an album provides feelings of nostagia and deepseeded connections that will last a lifetime~
I download a lot of the music that I listen to. Though, I do go out and purchase certain albums that I think are worth my money. I do pay to attend live shows, I do purchase merchandise from live shows, and in some cases I've even handed money to artists. So while I do download the majority my music, I also make an effort to support musicians. Believe me, if I had the money to buy every album I listen to, I would. But that's obviously not the case.
I agree entirely with the notion of using the internet as a listening booth. The albums i like, I buy. I'm only 17, and with my average job at a video store I still make the effort to pay. Having a CD is physical documentation of your music taste, whether on not that changes in the future, I enjoy looking at my phases of musical interest and revisiting the different music that characterises different times of my life. Its a special thing.
It wouldn't be nearly as bad if there was some actual price differentiation between media formats. The price of mp3s and digital media is absurdly high. Don't believe that then look at the lasest brand of ipod classic which holds 160 GB. In other words apple is trying to sell you a $250 container to go along with your supposed $39990 collection of songs if not more. That's like filling up a drinking container from Walmart with the most expensive wine on wine.com. How does that make sense?
I'm a student, so 99% of the time I download music. Even though I'm a student, don't get me wrong, I have free money. Money I spend on gym, movies and drinks with mates seems to be more important than music because I can get music for free. Maybe if I'm earning more, I would buy more music but for now the biggest support I give is attending concerts and buying the odd hard to download music (which mostly turns out to be the artists that need the most support).
I go to shows whenever a band I like/enjoy comes through town (nice to now that there are a lot of venues in my area and I happen to have bands I like come once a month). I sometimes pay for music, but that's usually when I decide to stroll through a local music shop. I do feel guilty not buying music, but it's the financial situation that prevents me from buying. College and broke. Plus if I buy one, I'll end up buying 2, and if I end up buying 2, I'll want to buy 3, and so on.
I download stuff, if I really like it i will go out and buy the physical album, sometimes i go out on a limb and buy an album without ever listening to it. For example I got The Books album, thought for food from a blog, i loved it and i bought that album along with most of their other discography. Another thing was The Wavves, I hadn't ever heard any of their music before, I saw the review that needledrop did, and dropped 20 bucks on the vinyl, loved the album.
I'm at this University and barely can afford to pay for my rent and uni fees. So yeah, even just one album can be pretty hard on my wallet right now. I do WISH I could support the bands though.
I love music and I love buying albums but its hard cause everything is so expensive these days and just paying for every single artist I like would leave me in major debt lol. But I buy albums of people I like I.e Bon Iver , Wu tang Clan, Ministry of sound etc
Honestly, I think microsoft's zune pass is one of the greatest things there is. For those of you unfamiliar, it is a monthly subscription costing $15 a month for unlimited music downloads that you can keep as long as you subscribe, and 10 free song downloads that you can keep forever. It means i can listen to all the albums i want, confident they will be subsidized by microsoft.
I'm one the small percentage younglings that likes to (STILL) buy CDs and vinyl. Vinyl just has this sound thats more real to me. I buy vinyl if the artist's album is just "Wahoo!" I like everything about it etc. But yeah, lack of money is tough when supporting artists. I have a few Sufjan Stevens vinyls, I have a Radiohead vinyl (I would like to get more of those), I have a Muse vinyl, (which I wish I wouldn't of bought-but in like 10 years it will be worth a lot), blah blah yeah!
Honestly, I first download if I've never heard of the band before. If I think it's just not good enough, I'll keep the download. When I think it's amazing, I'll buy the record, cd or vinyl, depends (psychedelic mostly vinyl or both, sometimes friends only have a pc or laptop to play music). I might buy the entire catalogue of the band and even go to shows! If you don't care bout sharing music, lemme put it very simple:
don't buy records, no money for the band, no money for instruments, no music
lately, Spotify has been useful for me to listen to way more music then ever before because it's just so easy (and free for now). I only buy digital downloads these days, I love the sites that ask for a "donation" because that gives the buyer the option of giving more or less depending on how much they want to support the music. Perhaps it is hypocritical, but I tend to purchase music from bands that are just starting out, and listen to bigger bands for free.
I'd love to support music, but being a teen and all, I don't have any money to do so. However, I'd rather help the artists I like through a different means of support (e.g. merch, shows). Wearing a shirt with [insert good band here] on the front lets me express myself and my love for that band, and shows are for the experience. They have more meaning, at least to me, than a collection of records stacked in the corner of my room. If I'm going to buy a record, it has to be one that I REALLY love.
The less money I waste on music, the less crushing debt after college. I have been eying some cds on amazon of my all time favorites but I doubt any of that money goes to the original artist or label. I feel like a dick but whatever
i dont illegally download music anymore because thebands i see now a days have to work day jobs. i feel paying is thanking the band for something good. even if the band dont get all the money they won't get any if we dont buy there albums, plus if people buy a bands album there is more reason for the lable to fund the next album. i do have music i have not payed for because friends lend me albums. but if it is a good album will go and get some merch t.
The answer is simple: I like music but I do not have money to buy original music. Some people will say that it's like saying "I like driving so I steal cars because I can't afford one" but in my opinion it is a different matter. If I had the chance to buy music, I would buy it. I have tons of CDs that I would love to buy. But you cannot simply divide in Supporting-by-buying/Not-supporting-by-not-buying. Cheers.
I have downloaded quite a bit recently, but I got to a lot of gigs and festivals and whatnot. And I do buy a lot of my music, especially from smaller artists/bands.
I love mostly old bands, so I don't feel as bad downloading stuff like The Beatles or The Velvet underground because they're time has passed anyway. It would be nice to own physical copies of albums I like, but I am a poor bastard that craves new music constantly. If I buy in future it will be records probaby, because it would be cool to have a record collection.
I havnt downloaded anything since the morpheus and kazaa lite days. Especially since the music I look for is usually hard to get, I prefer purchasing music from the artists directly at theyre shows. meeting them. chatting w/ them. shaking of hands and thanking them. ill download free mxitapes or singles, or rip streams of albums or songs I really like, then eventually buy them. Im broke n poor and the money I do somehow manage to aquire goes directly to music.
I download mainly, but not by choice. If I had the expendable income I'd definitely buy all the albums I like/love. As it stands, I only buy the albums that I consider amazing.
The recent trend (not a negative trend) in buying vinyls is definitely a great thing for supporting music, kids love having these awesome vinyl collections, and with more and more labels printing more and more vinyls, and as you say, making more money to fund new bands or bring out new clothes to further the supporting of your bands, so that they have money to do a tour and pass through your town so you GET to see them. It sort of seems like a symbiotic relationship, run out of text to explain.
I don't suport music. But not because I don't want to, but because the music that arrives here in my country is very, very overpriced that because taxes are huge here in my countr (Chile), and the music that gets here is not the music I like but he music that sells and it's proven to sell in europe or the usa. I don't have a job yet so I can't get a credit card or anything to import music and I really want to, but it's not possible for me yet.
yes and no. depending on how good the LP is, if i appreciate most of the tracks of the songs then ill buy it. few months ago i listened to Gonjasufi's a sufi and the killer (thanks to you needledrop) and it struck me like a lighting bolt so i bought it, loved it ever since. going to gigs is a great way to support the artists, they have to make their money somehow right? i have have to admit i download shit loads of albums, cause im a poor ass student motherfucker
Well what we should really be doing is using the energy from the earths vibrations to generate heat, and use that heat to power everything that is currently being powered by fossil fuels, essentially utilizing eternal renewable energy. With that energy use, there would be no need for money. Artists wouldn't have to pay bills & record companies wouldn't need to invest/waste so much time on bands that suck to promote bands that don't. Same goes for physical goods. Yes, I support music.
totally agree with you, thanks for promoting good ideas, I live in Ukraine it's sometimes hard to find stuff I need in a record store so I purchase from Amazon
I like downloadin the album and if I like it enough I'll pursue a physical release. I usually buy physical releases of classics like Black Widow, Uriah Heep, BTO, etc. I wish I could invest more into new albums, but they tend to be more expensive (last new album I bought was Warbringer's War Without End in 2009) .
I use to pirate a lot but now I kinda don't. Well thats not true. I just havent found the time to rly sit down and listen to whole albums even ones that I pirate. I got a vinyl player recently so I bought some LPs for that and i buy all the animal collective cds also cause i love them.
I give all my music away for free because treat people the way you wanna be treated. Give your shit away for free, but have a donate button.
If it's an artist that is already super successful, I figure they don't need my $15. But if it's a new/rising artist and they put out something I love I will buy a physical copy. I also support bands that I genuinely love by owning all physical copies of their material.
I love the ability to get music free on the interwebs because it lets me try full albums without having to have spent money on them and the full album experience is really what defines an artist. After I try an album and I find myself really enjoying an artist. Then yes of course absolutely I will buy that album.
Iv'e spent all my money in the last four years on music. I know it may not go right into the pockets of the artists that i love. But just as you said: It's like voting. It's not all about the money. It's about showing statistically that you care and support that artist and recorded music in general. Also I like good quality. I love the the whole experience of music. The album artwork, the lyrics and good quality sound. That's is something i think is well worth the money.
Really enjoy the reviews and appreciate you engaging others on this question. Sorry to shill, but I have a book coming out on this subject, FREELOADING, towards the end of the year. You will be 'down' and I bet others here will be interested...
An artist owns the right to decide whether to release music for free or put it up for sale. It's certainly easy for us to violate that right, but we ought to be honest with ourselves about our choice to do so, rather than attempt to rationalize it away.
i only buy music from Artists i want to get big. i dont see a point in buying kanye's/eminems music although i am a big "fan" of theirs. because they have made it, they're stinking rich.
i have only bought one album and one single.
album; JME - Blam! and single; Mr Hudson and Caspa - Love Never Dies
i do however buy my mum the odd dolly parton / beyonce cd on christmas or her birthday
I must admit, I download a lot of albums, there are way too many artists that I would have never known or truly appreciated if I hadn't get chance to dl their stuff from the Web.
On the other hand, I try to buy the physical copies of upcoming/favorite records as well; along with going to the shows/buying a merch, when I get a chance or when I can afford it. In fact, I've bought quite a few albums from bands which albums I've downloaded in the past.
Now, supporting music, I buy everything I can afford that week and what I can't gets put in my Youtube favorites until I can afford it. I LOVE Physical copies of music. This time three years ago I was using Limewire, Frostwire, etc and I realized how awful that really was when I started a band. I realized how none of the bands get recognition for their art. I support music through concerts, stores, t-shirts, everything possible.
My motto is that I believe I can download and listen to music from the internet for free. However if a particular band's album appears to grow on me and I enjoy it, I have to buy it.
It is absolutely important that when a listener becomes a fan, they should show their support, as a fan, it is their role to support and fund them in a commercial sense. Otherwise, the listener is not a fan but an unappreciative pirate.
Yes, I support music. But no, I do not support spending $60 at Best Buy for four CD's(Animal Collective's "Strawberry Jam", Sleigh Bells' debut, and The Black Keys' "The Big Come Up" and "Rubber Factory"). However, attending a live show of an artist you enjoy I think is the most beneficial way of showing monetary support.
last album I brought lupe fiasco LASERS and that was because i have his first 2 albums i wasnt gunna buy it because of all the label drama he went thru and didnt want atlantic to get my money but if I dont buy it for petty reasons we all lose...b4 that the last music I brought was Clipse til the casket drops dec 09... I have never purchased digitally i like to feel something in my hands but do i support my favourite artist honestly no i champion them to my firends am i a hypocrite.
All of the underground emo bands I listen to now give away all their music for free and only have merch for shows, but when I can buy something I always do.
I buy music when I can find and afford it, but otherwise no. I do support the hell out of it by telling everyone I know and have actually gotten some people to buy t-shirts and go to concerts just from name-dropping them.
as many of you have probably mentioned - retail CD's is an outdated format and i honestly don't think most artists care how well their CD's sell. buying a shirt from a merch stand instead of buying a mass produced one at the mall doesn't only make you more of a supporter of music but a more interesting person that your surroundings can relate to.
I'm just going to say... I don't have enough money to support my music habit. I would love to pay for LPs but I'd rather go to a concert and buy the merch and pay the door price. A band called Guidance Counselor came by my town and they blew out one of the monitors they were using, so I felt compelled to give them as much money as I could. They hooked me up with a free CD.
I feel like if I had more money, I would be able to buy errthang on vinyl and transcribe it on my computer.
I like buying physical music. Buying digital music will seem very silly in a few years, trust me. It will all be streamed. I buy merch, concert tickets etc. so in that way yes I support music.
@christchin910 I hope that you really do buy vinyl when you love an album (instead of just saying that, like many do). Right at this very moment, there is a record store just two miles away from me that is shutting down and packing up. No BS: CDs and LPs are going out-of-print at an alarming rate, bands are being dropped by their labels, indie labels are struggling or going under and musicians are giving up on their craft (food takes precedence over music for them as much as anyone else).
there is nothing i love more than taking home an album ive just bought and spending quality time digesting every part of it, if im not sure about a band i will download their album, if i listen to it more than 5 times i will buy it. having said that i have bought albums before simply based on the cover and i do still believe we should support the physical format :)
There is a middle ground in which I stand. I think that music (digitally) should not carry a price. A donation, sure, if the owner does not have means to release his music another way. Only owning music in the physical form should have a price tag. If I went to an art museum and took a picture of a piece of art, I do not need to pay royalties to look at my picture everyday. BUT, if I bought the art work physically then it is mine and I am helping the artists. I support music but not digital mp3s
@MarcoWeirdOh I mean the only problem with that is the fact that once you get it in mp3 or whatever format, you can put it on your iPod or mp3 player and physically carry it around. My problems are just not having enough money and records being really kind of hard to find around here.
i go to shows. those are the best way to support an artist anyways. a lot of times even if you buy the product the artist gets no music. so when i really want to support i buy an album at the show.
If the album/artist is good enough, logically you'll want to support them in some form anyway... you may not buy the album but you'll want to maybe see them in concert. What you enjoy and Interacte with and do, Is largely apart of your Identity, which If you're honest with yourself you should want to let people know who you are...even if you wear the bands T-shirt..anything etc. Music by & large Is not at the same quality as before. It's not hidden It's taken a DIP!..4 sure 2011=MORE oppression
There's absolutely NOTHING WRONG with music downloading. Was a super passionate music fan for a long time and right as downloading caught on big in 2000 onward with napster etc, music quality across the board! NOSEDIVED!, mainstream or even the "option to be exposed to an alternative music artist/soung of each genre that wasn't widely pushed or recognized.. became obsolete. Mtv controled It all. Then reality TV killed the "video star" prettymuch. I feel oppressed for CHOICE, 00'S you HAD to DIG!
I try to buy music now and then, but I just dont have the income to do it. I am effectively faced with a choice between paying for other peoples music, or spending that money on equipment to make my own music, at this moment.
I think the system is fine how it is now. People that really are into music seem to buy it, the people that only listen to singles download it. Main stream artists make money from other ways, which is why they are all so rich, you think every Lil Wayne fan bought all of his albums. I think it just just important to support artists, weather it be going to a concert, buying a tee shirt, and so on.
Illegal downloading definitively helps spread music and broaden peoples horizons
I buy CD's from labels and legally download from Amazon. Personally, I think some labels act responsibly, though many do not and often fuck over artists. I would rather my money go to the artist, rather than a crooked label, as they had little to do with the creation of said music. Being primarily a metal fan, I see the neccesity to support bands, as these guys need the money to keep recording, and illegally downloading is a disservice to bands that you claim to respect.
I never owned a record player so I never got into vinyls. When I started listening to music CD's were the medium, and that is still my preferred medium. I have never purchased more than two tracks of an album off of Itunes or any other mp3 music source. I don't like the non-physicality of that medium: I would have to spend my time duplicating it all onto CD format or risk losing it all in a computer catastrophe. I go to see my favorite music live if I can.
i used to d/l albums all the tim and if i liked it i went out and bought it, now i just buy things out of curiosity, even if ive never hard much by a said artist....plus im always going to shows
the bes way musicians can earn their cut nowadays is touring. these days, i go to about 5 concerts per week, may they be big or small. as a musician myself, i know that i may not reap any benefits from illegal downloads, but i feel secure in knowing that touring will keep my passion afloat.
I don't see why any music fan would not support music. I am really big on downloading music and usually don't buy what what I listen to. However, I still do have a sizable physical collection of albums that I love and had no problem paying money for. My excuse however for not paying so much is that the nearest place that sells music (a Best Buy...) is way too far away. And being a minor, I don't own any credit cards that I could use for online purchases. If I could, I definitely would. But yeah.
in a way. I dowload a ton of music but i mean ill buy something that i really like. I got the explosions in the sky , take care , take care , take care albumnmnmnmmnmnmnmnm
albums I find myself returning to I always buy on vinyl and I'll definitely see the band if they come through my area... bad music I delete.. I love downloading music , simple as that
just recently bought the new bon iver album. it is the first physical album i have bought in maybe five years. the large majority of my music i have torrented, downloaded from music blogs, bought on itunes, or swapped with friends. i completely forgot what it was like to own an album. there is a whole aesthetic to the thing. the album art, graphic design, cd art--all adds to the music as you understand the artist's (or label's) vision for what you're about to listen to.
Thanks for the awesome question :) I am against illegally downloading personally, but maybe that's just my guilty conscience. I do download lots of free tracks/albums that artists offer but never illegally...oh and if it's a pay what you want album...i usually don't pay :P But I do purchase a lot of digital music. I would like to buy more physical music but I kind of lack an income, hahaha. But I'm all for supporting music
Always buy never ever download. If its something I'm not crazy crazy about it goes top the end of my buying list. But pretty much buy. Support music or go fuck yourself! Listen to the new Black Dahlia Murder; Ritual. Fucking awesome. Also looking forward to the Lock up album coming out soon. Also new opeth can't wait. And WITTR are in the studio do I need to say more there... Didn't fucking think so. Dig your reviews keep it up needledrop.
You make me download a lot of shit. That being said, I own around a hundred band shirts and see numerous bands a month I normally would have never been introduced to without the internet. The listening booth metaphor works beautifully
I download every album I listen too. If I enjoy the album, I see the band live, I buy their album on vinyl (if not available, CD or cassette), and I see them live. If I find myself not liking it, I delete it off my computer. I treat it like I would a CD I got from the library.
I will always buy physical music. I know this has been said before, but there is nothing like going to a record store and talking to the guys who work there and buying music, (most of the music i love now is from bands they told me about) and bringing it home. Im just 13, so my money is limited, so i usually check out bands music, and reviews online before i buy, but sometimes i just go and buy whatever i want. My local record store will always be one of my favorite places.
I download albums online and if I really like the album, I'll buy it. If I don't like it, it would have been a waste of money to buy it to begin with. I don't have the money to go out and buy every album I want to hear.
When I appreciate a musician's work enough to call myself a fan, I find that it is only appropriate for me to purchase their music. Musicians do not deserve to remain in debt to their labels if illegal downloading is the reason why they can't make back the costs. Claiming that "the industry rips off the artists" just comes across as hypocritical when you are also ripping them off.
I'm guilty of buying my music. I think music is so engulfing and can be so much that I'll download anything I think sounds pretty decent even if I won't listen to it for a few more months because that track gave me some sort of entertainment for that period of time. I also feel like when you buy music you respect it more and actually listen to it rather than take it for granted and just consume it.
I get all the arguments in favor of 'illegal' downloading, but I'll still always buy CDs. I just love actually having a physical copy of the music, with the art and the lyrics and all that. I look at, re-organize, etc. my CD collection all the time. I love it.
The only time I download is when I REALLY want to hear something, and I don't have the money/time/whatever to buy it. But if I really like it, I'll still buy it eventually.
I download music because there is SO MUCH out there and I just don't have the fundage to try out everything, but if I d/l something and I really dig it, I go out of my way to either see that band live and buy shirts/albums from them or if they aren't really a touring band, I'll order from their website (or the websites they link to). I hate buying music on iTunes and Amazon because I feel like those corporations get in the way of my money getting to the band.
lol at defending illegal downloading because of some bullshit moral high ground. we download because it's free. having said that, i still buy CDs/records of albums that i've listened to over and over again and want to own.
I always try to buy cds I like but being a student, that's not always possible, so I stream it on spotify, but most of the time I try to give the band some money, whether its by buying merch, going to gigs or buying the cds, if I feel like a band has had some type of impact on me I have the same reasoning as you, I want them to release more.
why do the only bands that i'm listening to have some kind of link with the animal kingdom? fleet foxes, panda bear, animal collective, deerhunter. very strange
I love to buy albums from artists that really amaze me. There's something really satisfying about it, knowing I'm supporting them and all. But as much as I'd like to, I can't buy all the albums I like. I don't have the money or the space for all that. The music I download is the kind of stuff that I just wouldn't be listening to if piracy wasn't available. But I assure you, if I had the money, my walls would be stacked with LPs.
I definitely agree with you in that the freedom of downloading gives listeners access to a lot more material that they may otherwise never would have found. If I hadn't downloaded all of Spoon's albums 6 years ago, they wouldn't have become one of my favorite bands, and I never would have eventually bought all of those albums (and beyond). Whether or not you like Spoon, my point is, downloading is an enabler, not only in access, but in the creativity that access can inspire.
Hell yes I buy albums. I absolutely love to support the music that I love.
Message to anyone who is going to dance around the question. It's plain and simple. Do you buy the music you love? Not justify downloading to listen or anything else and failing to answer the question.
The only grey area I see here is out of print material or stuff that's too expensive to own (I'm talking $50 for one CD or more).
@xxdanxexx I personally dont buy CDs a lot because my little town doesnt have a record shop, but everytime I go to a show (the latest being The Black Dahlia Murder) I always buy the CD sometimes from the support band if I like it, its better to listen to a CD...its...better :D
fantano i salute you. I love your reviews but this is a serious question and something that my generation will have to deal with in the coming years. Physical music will never go away i love to buy records. but i download too... i just salute you sir. i respect you and don't stop doing what your doing.
I illegally downloaded every Dilla song I could find. I have never purchased a digital Atmosphere album, yet I have over 200 of their songs on my iPod. I got all of my DOOM songs off YouTube.
That being said, I've bought Donuts three times (CD, Vinyl and Vinyl reissue), I've bought posters and shirts from Atmosphere at concerts, and I bought every reissue of every DOOM album that's been released, plus DangerDOOM posters. I rip music illegally, but I find a way to support my favorite artists.
I hate 30 second samples (they don't give me any real way to judge the album) and youtube doesn't usually have vids for the stuff I listen to, so I pirate.
HOWEVER, if I like the album, I will buy it from the artists' website. There is a difference between being an internet "pirate" and being a thief.
Supporting musicians by buying music? What a nonsense! How can i support frank zappa with buying his albums? What good did buying his albums to kurt cobain? I bought all the nomeansno albums on cd and lp - did it change something? No! They still tour in their shabby bus through all the sh*ttiest clubs all over the world, except the ones that are near me! Most of my idols are dead! Buying music is not about supporting! Its about owning! Owning a physical lp or cd! I hate all this torrented crap!
I'm a musician that releases my own music for free, cause I pirate music. An artist only gets a few percent of the money from the record; they get a lot more from playing live.
I realize that it would be hypocritical of me to pirate music and then attempt to sell my own stuff, so I release it for free--because I love sharing music, and I love giving people my music, and I think with examples like Radiohead, other acts are okay with giving away music for free. I think it should be free.
I support music/musicians as much as I can. I admit that I get a few burned copies of records and a few digitally shared things. I also buy digital downloads from labels and I have an eMu account (which feeds the labels). Whenever I have a chance, I'll buy a physical copy of an album directly from an artist on tour.
Also, artists like Kristin Hersh and Juliana Hatfield have started to release records that are financed 100% by listener "donations". I support both of them financially.
I think you're omitting the impact of good ol' word-of-mouth hype. I see the analogy that buying an album is like voting, but I think liking a band on Facebook, contributing to their view count by watching them on YouTube, and hyping them to your friends are alternatives to buying an LP. Music as a profession never promised easy wealth, and I think bands know this. They have sweet lives, nonetheless, w/ or w/ out wealth. If I really like a band though, I'm sure to see them live or buy merch.
I have Spotify, so I don't need to download music and I'm will soon starting to pay for i so I can skip all the commercials. I also "Suport Music", if I listen to a very good album (on Spotify) I often buy it.
all bands should be independant. I used to buy a lot of albums but in the end the phisical album the cd just sucks i listend to my albums a fukton and now they all skip. CD suck, vinyl is great but in the end im buying it from someone that is selling the album for a second time i only buy old classic rock vinyls by second hand sellers. So who gets the money? the band? the company? No. If you support the band go see them live. Nowadays bands that come to my country Argentina, ask for $200 pesos.
@Frekifreks or more the average income for an Argentinian man is about 1500$ pesos so its very very expensive but we go anyways because we support the bands. just think about it the album is worth $30 pesos. For 200$ pesos you can buy several albums of a band almost a discography (radiohead has tickets at 250$ and they have just a few albums).
Gonna be honest, no, i dont. I download alot of music and hype it up to other people. Im one of them people that likes to find music instead of hearing it when its gone popular so if i find something i like quite early on in that bands career then i would set my heart on telling people about them and making sure everyone I know knows about it. Is that kind of supporting them? haha
I do like to buy phsyical music, but to be honest, I don't always do it to support the artist. Sometimes I just prefer to own a physical copy. But there are times where I will buy to support, especially with local artists.
Often times buying the music directly supports the bigger corporations behind the artist and not the artist themselves. If I really want to support an artist I love/like, I see them live (which goes majorly to their pockets as opposed to the small % they get from cd sales) and/or I purchase merch from the show (ie shirts, posters, etc) which they also get a larger profit from. Every now and then I will actually buy a vinyl for my record player, but you can't burn a 12" now can you? ahhaha
Well, I'm brazilian. And I love good music. No matter what kind or nationality, that's why I watch you Anthony. But here at Brazil, there's a huge problem about the music industry: the taxes are wayyy too abusive, until the national records sometimes are very, I said VERY expensives for what they really worth. So, downloading is a way out to protest about this. It's not cool I admit it, but... (sorry my english)
yes, i buy music, mostly vinyl or cd. if an artist wants to give away music for free, thats their choice, but if you want something, you should pay for it.
I buy physical albums as much as I can. As a not so wealthy college student, that is difficult. I have spent tons of money and have probably bought 30 albums since last October.
Well I spend all my spare money in music, gigs and albums. And still I have tons of albums in my pc just downloaded. I support music, i'll buy albums i love everytime i can afford it, but i'll have into hand every single piece of music i can downloading it, music god knows im innocent.
All I know, is I had a job when I was 16, for the exclusive reason of buying music and going to shows. So, that's not an excuse. I do mediafire things, but it's only a way to introduce myself to music before I buy it or support the artists. Also, I'm a sucker for deluxe editions :3

GunSmoke347 2 weeks ago

MrMortHD 2 months ago
I should say though, I support music. If I like an artist (after illegally downloading their album), when the next one comes out, I will buy it and then listen to it for the first time. Pity the next album never ends up being as good as the album I illegally downloaded. But I often go back and buy albums that I have illegally downloaded if I really think that that was the album that deserved my money.

I don´t support vinyl (for ecological reasons).
I preffer to buy CD's (not good for the planet, but at least less poisoning for the planet)
I don´t have that much money to spend, so I´m very picky.
But I try support music

P.S I dont pay for everything
kolllsss 4 months ago

DarkAngelEU 6 months ago
lately, Spotify has been useful for me to listen to way more music then ever before because it's just so easy (and free for now).

Cheers.

What I do is download the album first, and if I like it enough I will go out and buy it on vinyl. VINYL FTW!!!

First off, I just subbed, you're a very cool guy.

Otherwise, the listener is not a fan but an unappreciative pirate.
stefmano88 8 months ago
Yes, I support music. But no, I do not support spending $60 at Best Buy for four CD's(Animal Collective's "Strawberry Jam", Sleigh Bells' debut, and The Black Keys' "The Big Come Up" and "Rubber Factory"). However, attending a live show of an artist you enjoy I think is the most beneficial way of showing monetary support.

I buy music when I can find and afford it, but otherwise no. I do support the hell out of it by telling everyone I know and have actually gotten some people to buy t-shirts and go to concerts just from name-dropping them.
emdotceedot 8 months ago
as many of you have probably mentioned - retail CD's is an outdated format and i honestly don't think most artists care how well their CD's sell. buying a shirt from a merch stand instead of buying a mass produced one at the mall doesn't only make you more of a supporter of music but a more interesting person that your surroundings can relate to.
SoreThroatVocals 8 months ago
I'm just going to say... I don't have enough money to support my music habit. I would love to pay for LPs but I'd rather go to a concert and buy the merch and pay the door price. A band called Guidance Counselor came by my town and they blew out one of the monitors they were using, so I felt compelled to give them as much money as I could. They hooked me up with a free CD.
I feel like if I had more money, I would be able to buy errthang on vinyl and transcribe it on my computer.
tobywongcharliechang 8 months ago
I like buying physical music. Buying digital music will seem very silly in a few years, trust me. It will all be streamed. I buy merch, concert tickets etc. so in that way yes I support music.
condorlio07 8 months ago
@christchin910 I hope that you really do buy vinyl when you love an album (instead of just saying that, like many do). Right at this very moment, there is a record store just two miles away from me that is shutting down and packing up. No BS: CDs and LPs are going out-of-print at an alarming rate, bands are being dropped by their labels, indie labels are struggling or going under and musicians are giving up on their craft (food takes precedence over music for them as much as anyone else).

tooltard 8 months ago
There is a middle ground in which I stand. I think that music (digitally) should not carry a price. A donation, sure, if the owner does not have means to release his music another way. Only owning music in the physical form should have a price tag. If I went to an art museum and took a picture of a piece of art, I do not need to pay royalties to look at my picture everyday. BUT, if I bought the art work physically then it is mine and I am helping the artists. I support music but not digital mp3s
MarcoWeirdOh 8 months ago
@MarcoWeirdOh I mean the only problem with that is the fact that once you get it in mp3 or whatever format, you can put it on your iPod or mp3 player and physically carry it around. My problems are just not having enough money and records being really kind of hard to find around here.
I do see your point though.

nbafreak93 8 months ago

Being primarily a metal fan, I see the neccesity to support bands, as these guys need the money to keep recording, and illegally downloading is a disservice to bands that you claim to respect.
misanthropyeternal 8 months ago
I never owned a record player so I never got into vinyls. When I started listening to music CD's were the medium, and that is still my preferred medium. I have never purchased more than two tracks of an album off of Itunes or any other mp3 music source. I don't like the non-physicality of that medium: I would have to spend my time duplicating it all onto CD format or risk losing it all in a computer catastrophe. I go to see my favorite music live if I can.

But yeah.

just recently bought the new bon iver album. it is the first physical album i have bought in maybe five years. the large majority of my music i have torrented, downloaded from music blogs, bought on itunes, or swapped with friends. i completely forgot what it was like to own an album. there is a whole aesthetic to the thing. the album art, graphic design, cd art--all adds to the music as you understand the artist's (or label's) vision for what you're about to listen to.

My local record store will always be one of my favorite places.

thebroncos9 8 months ago
When I appreciate a musician's work enough to call myself a fan, I find that it is only appropriate for me to purchase their music. Musicians do not deserve to remain in debt to their labels if illegal downloading is the reason why they can't make back the costs. Claiming that "the industry rips off the artists" just comes across as hypocritical when you are also ripping them off.
CardinalKickass 8 months ago
I'm guilty of buying my music. I think music is so engulfing and can be so much that I'll download anything I think sounds pretty decent even if I won't listen to it for a few more months because that track gave me some sort of entertainment for that period of time. I also feel like when you buy music you respect it more and actually listen to it rather than take it for granted and just consume it.
FakYbiGspiN 8 months ago
I get all the arguments in favor of 'illegal' downloading, but I'll still always buy CDs. I just love actually having a physical copy of the music, with the art and the lyrics and all that. I look at, re-organize, etc. my CD collection all the time. I love it.
The only time I download is when I REALLY want to hear something, and I don't have the money/time/whatever to buy it. But if I really like it, I'll still buy it eventually.
ANTIanitmetalclub 8 months ago
I download music because there is SO MUCH out there and I just don't have the fundage to try out everything, but if I d/l something and I really dig it, I go out of my way to either see that band live and buy shirts/albums from them or if they aren't really a touring band, I'll order from their website (or the websites they link to). I hate buying music on iTunes and Amazon because I feel like those corporations get in the way of my money getting to the band.

@christchin910

I hate all this torrented crap!
kingandkongo 8 months ago
I'm a musician that releases my own music for free, cause I pirate music. An artist only gets a few percent of the money from the record; they get a lot more from playing live.
I realize that it would be hypocritical of me to pirate music and then attempt to sell my own stuff, so I release it for free--because I love sharing music, and I love giving people my music, and I think with examples like Radiohead, other acts are okay with giving away music for free. I think it should be free.
Theseventhknight 8 months ago
I support music/musicians as much as I can. I admit that I get a few burned copies of records and a few digitally shared things. I also buy digital downloads from labels and I have an eMu account (which feeds the labels). Whenever I have a chance, I'll buy a physical copy of an album directly from an artist on tour.
Also, artists like Kristin Hersh and Juliana Hatfield have started to release records that are financed 100% by listener "donations". I support both of them financially.
redblackhockey 8 months ago
I think you're omitting the impact of good ol' word-of-mouth hype. I see the analogy that buying an album is like voting, but I think liking a band on Facebook, contributing to their view count by watching them on YouTube, and hyping them to your friends are alternatives to buying an LP. Music as a profession never promised easy wealth, and I think bands know this. They have sweet lives, nonetheless, w/ or w/ out wealth. If I really like a band though, I'm sure to see them live or buy merch.

all bands should be independant.
Frekifreks 8 months ago
@Frekifreks or more the average income for an Argentinian man is about 1500$ pesos so its very very expensive but we go anyways because we support the bands. just think about it the album is worth $30 pesos. For 200$ pesos you can buy several albums of a band almost a discography (radiohead has tickets at 250$ and they have just a few albums).
Frekifreks 8 months ago
Gonna be honest, no, i dont. I download alot of music and hype it up to other people. Im one of them people that likes to find music instead of hearing it when its gone popular so if i find something i like quite early on in that bands career then i would set my heart on telling people about them and making sure everyone I know knows about it. Is that kind of supporting them? haha
rhysj987 8 months ago
