  • I hate refine edge. Extract was a lot better and easier to use !

  • Talk too much? The man is trying to teach you an art , God forbid you would actually have an understanding of the details of your work.

  • I agree with the guy up above. He prattle`s on too much, and he already has the masks and layer`s done. Or i forgot to feed the dog before i started this tutorial.

  • Dude! You are a Godsent!

  • learned more than one technique from this tutorial. Thanks so much, appreciate that you have taken the time to do this.

    DeLarren Sr.

  • This video was EXTRA helpful while watching. But while trying to follow, I tried to work on a photo and my refine mask tool wouldn't work. I click on the radius, smooth, feather; move them from side to side and nothing changes. Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong? Wrong settings? Did I miss a step?

  • Out of all the videos i have watched.... this was by far THE MOST HELPFUL! and also i've learned (on my own since i couldn't really find any help on the subject) is that with mixed backgrounds you should dup the layer (i always put my dup layer under the original)... then go and cut it out with the lasso tool... everything very close (except hair) then go in and follow his instructions. afterwards go in and erase everything from your dup layer that you dont want (normally background).

  • You are an awesome teacher. Your tutorials are very detailed, which i need because this is my first time working with photoshop so i am learning basically from scratch. i learned so much in this one video. thanx!

  • Epic video. I knew some tricks with smart radius but not that much to get the perfect result :D thanks

  • Yo, this is fucking stupid. Why would anybody watch some fucking 15 min. video just to know how to use one fucking tool!

  • @MyAnthony9 Because some of us don't want to do some sloppy "quick fix" and are willing to learn how to do it right, even if it means taking 15 mins out of our horribly busy lives >.<

If you don't like the time it takes to learn how to do it right, take that ten seconds it took you to type this comment, and use it to click a shorter video that will benefit you and your hectic life style far better than this comment did.

  • Wow, some people are just so critical..maybe they stink just like me, but just don't realize it..

  • Awesome, I ought to have this mastered in about 5 years..you just remind me how bad I really am lol..

  • STOP SHOUTING! I can hear you just fine, sir!

  • @mikvance You do have what is called 'volume control' try it sometime.

  • @GardenOOblivion You do have what is called 'a sense of humor' try it sometime.

  • @mikvance No I don't. How dare you make an assumption about my personality. *rolls eyes*

  • @GardenOOblivion hahahaha! I owe you a beer :D

  • Masking out a girl with dark hair, that's on plain, solid blue background and placing that over another blue background is not that impressive.

Refine edge is a brilliant tool though…

  • dude, talk too much, just get to the point.

talk about Refine Edge as shown in title instead of every detail that's unrelated.

    other than that, great tutorial.

  • @coolineho AMEN! lol.

  • I don't agree w/ some of the comments posted here regarding the quality of the finished image but it's true that finding a video that has a less than a very clean even toned image is what people really need to see.I tried this process on an image of someone in front of a light off green wall & a dark strip that runs diagonally along with the different shades of light. It's impossible to get a mask anywhere close to what is shown here. Refine Mask requires an extremely crisp and even toned image.

  • nice one,Subscribed.

  • the hair still dont look right..

  • Those that want the EXTRACT tool back, just go to adobe site CS5 add ons and you can get it back, just download it and put it in the plugins folder and it works just like older versions. Also they have the TWAIN driver for older scanners.

  • While this is probably the best video I have seen on "Refine Mask" and it does well to go beyond Adobe's limited in-house instructions, I find that Refine Mask does not live up to the hype. It seems to fall far short of perfect masking in my personal use. I find that I still have to spend a lot of time going into the layer mask and 'manually' making the requisite refinements, just like in the old days.

If you watch carefully, you will see Deke does this, too, so I am not imagining things.

  • It looks better at 03:46 than it does at 15:33...

  • You make it sound very confusing half way through.

  • @FixItSpray lol, this isnt a solid color background. If it was, you could simply use the magic wand tool... :)

  • i have to agree, it seems everyone is demonstrating this tool against solid backgrounds instead of mixed backgrounds and its getting frustrating as hell trying to find an actual guide to use this properley. the amount of ghosting im getting is unbelievable. maybe cs6 will finally hit the nail on the head.

  • @ReaperGFX Not only is it a solid background, but the original background is blue being overlayed onto a blue sky and blue ocean. That's bound to help show the technique at its best.

  • Great video and thanks.. But what if she were standing in front of trees or shrubs, I would think you'd take a different approach to this...

  • Not digging it.....give me back my extract tool please!!!!!!

  • recent advanced tut for cs5 is 26 hours long on Lynda . com

  • I like watching Deke tuts, but downside is even in the advanced tuts he takes 20 mins to make 1 point.

  • You sell the dvd's for $150 on Lynda then put them on youtube for free. Bastards

  • @FixItSpray Good I just wrote something similar before I read your comment. Bet he can't do it.

  • This is the easy part of selecting a background. Now let's see you seperate a portrait from a detailed background and place it on a plain colour .

  • The hair still doesn't look that good. Disappointing. What a waste of 15 minutes.

  • I CANT EVEN FCKIN FOCUS ON THIS VIDEO AND I AM ABOUT TO LEAVE NOW!!!

You seriously talked too fckin much for me to even enjoy this. Just cut to goddamn chase dude. We know about all the past features already. I am going to another video where they are straight to the point.

  • @GottaLoveTheCritics His books are just as rubbish. He cracks silly little jokes in with the dialogue and just becomes irritating.

  • THIS VIDEO HAS TONS OF STEPS PLUS CS 5 AND I CANT SEE A CLEAN

EXTRACTION BACKGROUND ! WTF ! 15 MIN AND MILLIONS OD STEPS FOE A PITY RESULT ! ONLY A BEGINNER WILL LIKE THIS TUT

  • @shazzbot007 cus, it's not made for video

  • I love your videos! your a real night and day of CS5 very informative and enjoying to watch thanks so much!

  • the refine edge is still fucked! everytime i use the brush on the edge it leaves a dark black grudgy look (-_-)

  • you make CS5 looks not to good

  • What a pitty 20 years and 12 rewrites on and Photoshop still can't remove an image from a plain background without all this messing around.

  • @TALKCalgary nooo This is only standard editing you just learn simply how to do this, photoshop functions amazingly just alot of people dont understand how to use i. JUST EDUCATE YOURSELF!!!!

  • @TALKCalgary if everything could be done with the push of a button then photoshop would not be as amazing

  • @TALKCalgary erm… somethings will always require skill. Don't rely on software to do the work for you! :P

  • i loved this video and all of your other tutorials; they are very easy to follow with the wonderful way you carefully explained things and demonstrated the techniques, i cant wait to start using CS5 yes a lot of new features from CS4

  • Fantastic tutorial!!!

  • to evryone, how did he do to have two images, the background and the model in same layer. coz if i open an image in where i want to put the model im working on it, normally it will open in diff window am i correct? so, my question is how did he do to open two diff image in same layer? please help

  • Very decent tutorial. I finally get the whole image now of the refine edge tool, and your additions with the smudge and brush on overlay tool will be very useful for future works. Thanks alot!!

  • Great video tutorial. Love that you go into more depth than other tutorials. Keep up the good work.

  • thank you!

  • Very useful. Thanks....

  • Thanks Deke, i really love your way of explaining stuff!

i had problems wit that hair selection thing in cs3 and 4 before, thank u for presenting me a new easyer way to refine that hair selection!

cs5 is just awesome, i hd the chance of testing it and all those new application its really worth its money, but thats just my oppinion.
