So what's the moral of the story? You shouldn't use CS or OC spray in a gun fight? I guess peperspray is better than nothing and to use it if it's all that you have, but the best weapon is your brain; don't get yourself in that situation or if not possible just run. Any weapon used for self defense should be used as a very last resort.

It also pisses me off that most US governments do not allow consealed carry of a firearm. I have a handgun but I don't carry it on me bc it's a fellony

Actually cloud, most states DO permit concealed carry with a permit, and most states also permit open carry without a permit. Gotta watch the blue states though.

Technically, the fed has no authority over state's permitting concealed carry-it's really not the feds jurisdiction. The Constitution clearly outlines the right to armed self-defense. Hence the cases about chicago and DC.

I don't think OC spray is intended to prevent someone from being able to draw their weapon on you... It is a time buyer. Your odds of someone getting a clear shot of you after you spray them and run are much better than those of you standing there with no defense. It is merely a tool that when applied properly can buy you vaulable seconds and give you a potential leg up on your assailant.

I worked in a jail for psych for 7 yrs. I got regular exposure to pepper and chemical sprays. I could still function quite well. It was irritating, but not debilitating.

3rd. PAVA spray relies on it getting in their eyes, for it to work...CS gas has longer and more reliable effects, and if they breath it it still hurts.

After using the pepper spray use tactical movement to get away. Fast erratic zig zagging and don't stop. Get the hell out and get help. It's not a guarantee of total safety, It is however a way to get added advantage over an assailant.

Not all chemical weapons are universally effective. I know because I was exposed to CS once a year, Every year, For four years. I could still function. It was the pepper spray that got me.

If you buy the right kind of pepper spray it works. I used the Jogger Fogger by Pepper Power and the spray didn't even hit me or come close to me and I was on the ground coughing. Pepper Spray is the best non-lethal weapon there is.

I use Sabre Advanced Key Ring Unit with CS Tear Gas and Red pepper since 1995. It has saved my ass several times. I also know a lady who used it on her ex boyfriend and when the cops got to the scene the guy was still on the ground in pain and had to go to the ER. The Sabre OC/CS saved her. This vid is misleading. If you look up the independent lab tests of various pepper sprays you will find Sabre and Sabre red are the hottest. Throw in the CS gas on top of the Red Pepper and it is the best.

I think the video was meant to show that OC or OC/CS will not work fast enough to stop someone with a firearm from being able to shoot you. As for shooting an attacker that is spraying you with OC/CS or OC spray, you could argue that you believed you were in serous physical danger, and that once the spray took effect, the attacker could have taken your lawfully carried sidearm and used it against you. I bet if you sprayed a cop, he would shoot you on the spot for the same reason.

The point is despite being sprayed he managed to draw and sight his weapon on a target and unload the clip.

Showing pepper spray may be a deterrent but it's not enough to incapacitate immediately. Initially all you're going to do is aggravate your attacker. You also have to be so close to your target for spray to be effective that even with blurry vision it's hard to miss at point blank.

This was all pre-planned. The guy knew he was going to immediately turn and fire at a predetermined target. Plus, he is an expert marksman. This demonstration did not show the true value of using pepper spray on an unexpectant opponent. Pepper spray will incapacitate you. If yo don't believe me try it. The video was too short. It should have shown the gun shooter after he unloaded his gun. He probably couldn't see.

A small percentage of people may be super sensitive to it's effects or maybe the people who died had other health problems that were aggrevated by the gas,. Is this an NRA propaganda video? The guy is a veteran police officer who knows where the target is before hand and is well aware that he is about to be sprayed. This is not a "real life" scenario. I don't carry pepper spray for all the gun fights I go to. I carry it because it's a lot better than having NO defence. I don't plan on spraying a trained cop and give him fair warning that I'm about to spray it. I HAVE been in situations where I felt my life might be threatened, but NEVER With a gun.

Ok, the video response was done a little over a year ago using the EXACT same OC spray seen in this video.

Key points are that YES it's effective, the pain makes you want to drop to your knees, it WILL blind you from your eyes swelling, and on some individuals it can take up to 30 seconds to take effect

He also knew he was going to be sprayed. Defensive chemical weapons work best when deployed without warning. They are best used to distract/slow down the attacker so you can get away. Most of the time they are used at 3 feet away. The main targets are the eyes, nose and mouth. I recommend either Fox Labs 5.3 or Sabre Red DPS. Handguns become extremely deadly at knife ranges due to the release of high-pressure gasses and the speed at which they can be fired at that range. Imagine stabbing someone with a 3/4" rod five times a second, but the rod is moving at 1200 feet per second and injects fire at 30,000 psi into each wound it makes. And then imagine that it takes little effort to do this. So don't bring a knife to a gun fight, or to a knife fight, either. Bring a gun everywhere you go.

If you manage to land OC on perp's eyes, it will at least temporarily blind him due to capillary vein action in the eyes. I do have somewhat tolerance to OC and CS, but I never got sprayed directly into the eyes during training, cos I know that will really mess me up.

I wouldn't entirely rely on OC, but it sure is a nice option for where using deadly force would be problematic in court.

Here in Ohio, you can pepper spray someone for no reason and it's only a misdemeanor. But if you brandish a gun without first being assaulted, it's a felony (with a CCW license). You can carry the spray in your hand, too. I see the spray as the more practical first response to most self-defense situations. Rarely if ever will your life be under threat, but more often someone may want to just kick your ass. No need to kill them and get a felony record.

I took a direct hit from the stuff in the eye and it did F###ing hurt..... This was the second take as the thin jet of spray was not accurate enough to hit in a place that would do damage quite a few times, it was a joke. Remember this was a comfortable environment, I would say for most people in a stressful situation this stuff would be useless as they would have issues deploying it quickly and spraying it accurately enough to hit a vulnerable target i.e. the eyes.

Im an OC Advanced Instructor as well as non-lethal defensive weapons and tactics advanced instructor, in my professional opinion OC is an extremely effective weapon that can be used in a self defence situation after you have received the correct training and use of OCAT. You cannot carry OCAT without such training in it use or deployment combined with POM or levels of force awareness.
