dude you are the man, I wish I had half your talent of design and the ability to turn your ideas into a machine that actually does what it was made to do. bravo sir keep it up.
The letters would look more natural if you could somehow use blocks that better fit the letter shape, instead of just using rectangles. For example, look at how "VA" would seem stretched out, using the uniform spacing created by the rectangles.
@Matthiaswandel I actually meant what is apparently called "kerning." After I learned this, I found that someone else had already asked you the question, and that the problem was already addressed. Sorry about that.
Not to criticize your design, because it really is amazing, but have you ever thought of a different way to give it the "3D" effect. I mean, a little better way to make it go up and down other than the pivot you have? Only reason I ask is because I am an engineering student and the only thing i wouldnt like about the pivot is that it tilts your router bit slightly and therefore could cause imperfections in the cutouts, the violin scroll for one.
Both the router and the follower tilt, so the carved shape is still accurate.
Sure, something more complex could be designed, but you have to ask, is triple the complexity for questionable benefit (and a likely loss in accuracy) desirable?
@Matthiaswandel That is totally understandable. I really do like your design, as it is quite simple, and works great. I cut out letters all the time, but I do it a much harder way. Something like this would make my life tons easier. Im basically just throwing thoughts out there because Im contemplating designing my own machine, but again, a bit more complex, and out of machined aluminum (but I understand, you work with wood, nothing wrong with that.)
@Matthiaswandel wow....boy do I feel dumb. I didnt really pay attention to what you meant by the fact that the whole system pivots and that the follower is the same shape as the bit. NOW I see how you get it to be accurate and not end up being angled (had to work it out in my mindO. And now that I see that, I can see that there will be no imperfections. I now admit to being dumb and bow down to your genius (I was already bowing down before lol)
Hi! Im Mexican I do not speak inglish because I just an old carpenter... but I try to say is two things: a) you are a M M M (Master Mister Matthias -so young but all wood master)
b) wuld you be so kind as to teach in spanish? or something else...
my son write this words I hope to explane us ¡thanks!
When your video includes links, like to your stencil or gear generators, I think you should put them into the video description too. If for no other reason than letting you track how many hits came from that particular video.
Oh... btw... i wanted to say that your current 3D router has a small flaw - using the tilt you are limited to what height you can make models in, because the cutter and tracer uses a tilt motion...
Converting the 3D router into parallax tracer would "simply" require that you mount the router to the wall (high), spring-suspended and using the same parallax structure on the Y Axis as the X axis :)
@TheDivineCellphone (continued) - or even better... Use a giant Cross-joint to suspend the router in mid air... kind of like the ABB flex picker is constructed
@Matthiaswandel Well you wouldn't necessarily have to go CNC. With a milling machine you could make the templates much quicker, and with infinite freedom.
Because of where the base of the Pantograph is fixed do you have issues with the angle of the bit? Without some way to level the router you will almost always be cutting at an angle. Is it significant enough to be a problem or is it noticeable at all?
I've seen sign makers at craft shows spray paint the whole thing black, wait ten minutes, then belt sand the paint off the board. End result is black letters on a light background.
My only worry is that the angle of the bit changes as the depth changes, but it probably doesn't make much of a difference at the depths you're working with.
Wow Mathias! I'm astonished at all the things you do. Are there any plans for a home-made CNC router in the future? Anyway, thank you for all your time and effort in putting these video's together. Aloha! From Hawaii
The router doesn't stay vertical as you move in the z-axis. Wouldn't that cause errors if you are using a very tall (your uppermost and lowermost points far apart) detail?
Nicely done.

really nice. Have you tried/considered mounting the router at the end to double output? Is that a loss of precision concern?

The template holder reminds me a little bit of Scrabble.
BIackHatted 11 months ago
You should totally make a Comic Sans template.
ToiletMaker 11 months ago
Can your stencil-maker deal with issues like Kerning the fonts?
Something else to play with is the idea of the bit NOT matching the angle of the follower. That might produce some interesting effects.
You could also duplicate some bias relief carvings with this.

Will the depth vary pending on how close/far you are on the stencil?
pberglin 11 months ago 2
Nope, always the same ratio as the magnification.
But the plywood everything is on has to be flat. If it has a twist, the depth varies from left to right.
