I thought about her the rest of the night! When she ran in the match race, I thought, "Dont go Ruffian. Dont go. You'll die." But it was too late

I watched the Grand National this year - was actually at Aintree course and such...I never want to go again because of them calling the horses "Obsticals" though I know its better than saying outright the horses have died...I don't know what to believe about it anymore.

Can anyone tell me did Ruffian run in any races outside the US?
I saw some footage of an injured filly who continued to run with a wildly swinging foot,unheard of,would you know this horse anyone.I don't this horse was destroyed at the racecourse but i am not sure what happened to her.This would be in the late 90s i think.

Ruffian's genetics had something to do with this too. Her sire had 3 breakdowns in his career, and her dam had to be retired early due to a breakdown and could only be used as a broodmare. It's horrible. They should've listened to her trainer--he knew she wasn't ready to race Foolish Pleasure. She could've made a great broodmare. But what touches me is that she is the only horse buried at Belmont Park. She's in the infield, by the flagpole with her nose pointed towards the finish line :')

@DragonCrazyGirl in races there are weights from 4500-5500kg lasting on the horses legs... the bones break at a maximum of 8000kg, so... they just need to make one wrong step... (i hope you understood what i meant, i'm not english so my english is quite bad ;) )
very tru barbaro is the boy verison of ruffian and if they both would ran and made it threw the triple crown races they would be amoung the triple crown winners
@zwl30 Not really Ruffian ran 10 races Barbaro only won 6. Yes there are some simalarities, for sure. But Ruffian was a filly that was better than all the boys, much more impressive than barbaro.
@zwl30 Unfortunately, Ruffian was already past the triple crown races and too this was her 3 year old year, so she would never have gotten the chance to run in those classics. She did however win what was known as the Triple Crown for Fillies. Barbaro was in the hunt for the Triple Crown, and had won the Derby, but broke down in the Preakness. I have read that Barbaro was an odds on favorite to win the triple crown, had things been different.

Barbaro was the one who won the Kentucky Derby in 2006 in a spectacular way. He had never been defeated before. When he started in the Preakness he was the big favorite. But shortly after the start he broke down due to a severe injury at his right hind leg. They tried to fix his leg and they succeeded, but he got laminitis on his both front legs and had to put him down.

that was part of it but if u watch the actual race footage u can see that she goes quite a ways after the gate incident. on the actual race footage u can c that there were a few birds on the track the flew in front of her causing her to immediately pull up. she likely spooked and put all her weight on that foot and it couldnt handle it.
your right but most race horses would run side ways the whole way from the birds and when she put her weight on it she could not take the weight so she broke her fetlock
she died a hero in my mind she would have been a legend if it werent for that folish mistake. the jockey just should have stopped her instead of letting her run it out

@MeredithFanLovesNugi I forgot: Ruffian kept on running, because she was afraid, confused, stressed, and wanted to flee. A horse does not have such thoughts as "Hey, my leg's broken, I should stop running immediately, so I won't hurt myself furthermore and can get some help."
@MeredithFanLovesNugi If you want evidence of that, it is documented that when she woke up from the anesthesia, she tried to run. she tried so hard that she broke her other leg with her cast and then threw the cast off. They were willing to try to save her with one broken leg, but it just wasn't possible with 2.
Thanks for this tribute! I don't like to take offence to Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, even if they are two queens, but Ruffian was queen, "THE QUEEN" from then to nowadays: Beloved, unforgettable gentle mare, beautiful and great!
I'm italian and I only loved Varenne as much as I loved Ruffian, even if from so far! How much I wished she could be saved, in vain!
But, as long as someone continue to remember her, she lives ,runs and wins.....

The movie that was released at the Belmont was later put onto a DVD. I don't know of any documentary--not to say there ain't one, I just dunno about it.

this video made me cry. this horse was truly amazing. i heard that the jockey never pulled out the whip on her because she didnt need it. wow, this is amazing. this horse was a miracle to the horse racing business. poor thing.
There's a famous chapter in the book 'Burning From The Start'--Jacinto laid the whip on her in her first race, even though the trainer told him not to. Afterwards, the trainer--Frank--started yelling, swearing, and asking why he had cropped her. Jacinto is just like, o.o, and "She was already so fast. I just wanted to see what she would do."
Sadly, the movie didn't do the scene accurately or justice--I guess they wanted to keep the language somewhat appropriate. xD
When Ruffian was buried, he gave her his very best blankets because he knew she deserved them. He also swore that no other horse would ever be worthy of entering that stall as long as he owned that barn..

both girls were coming 1st by a neck and both girls did injuries to there legs.
An it creeps me out how wanda broker her leg exactly when she was racing past where ruffian was burried!

in this movie i found out what korked he leg at the start when she jumped out of the gatess she mis plased her hoof and bounced an then she ran putting presure on it thats what caused it rip ruffian gallop on in our heart with nothing stopping you live on the filly who ran like the wind

that was part of it but if u watch the actual race footage u can see that she goes quite a ways after the gate incident. on the actual race footage u can c that there were a few birds on the track the flew in front of her causing her to immediately pull up. she likely spooked and put all her weight on that foot and it couldnt handle it.

your right but most race horses would run side ways the whole way from the birds and when she put her weight on it she could not take the weight so she broke her fetlock

@MeredithFanLovesNugi Sorry, but they want to run because they're kept in small stables all day long. Apart from this most of them are forced to by dreshing. Do you really think Ruffian was like: "Yeah, cool, I'm first"?! That's ridiculous, a horse doesn't care about stuff like that, they just want to live FREE in the true sense of the word.

@MeredithFanLovesNugi I forgot: Ruffian kept on running, because she was afraid, confused, stressed, and wanted to flee. A horse does not have such thoughts as "Hey, my leg's broken, I should stop running immediately, so I won't hurt myself furthermore and can get some help."

@MeredithFanLovesNugi If you want evidence of that, it is documented that when she woke up from the anesthesia, she tried to run. she tried so hard that she broke her other leg with her cast and then threw the cast off. They were willing to try to save her with one broken leg, but it just wasn't possible with 2.

Thanks for this tribute! I don't like to take offence to Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, even if they are two queens, but Ruffian was queen, "THE QUEEN" from then to nowadays: Beloved, unforgettable gentle mare, beautiful and great!
I'm italian and I only loved Varenne as much as I loved Ruffian, even if from so far! How much I wished she could be saved, in vain!
But, as long as someone continue to remember her, she lives ,runs and wins.....

Ruffian is still one of the greatest race horses ever. I just hope that Rachel Alexandra doesn't endup like her. This video is amazing. You did a great job. The movie is really good. I still can't watch the part where she breaks down.

ruffian died becuase they start raning them at 2 and their bones are not fully grown. thousands of racehorses have been wasted becuase of this. dont you agree? one got slaughtered after winning millions of doallars.

The movie that was released at the Belmont was later put onto a DVD. I don't know of any documentary--not to say there ain't one, I just dunno about it.

this video made me cry. this horse was truly amazing. i heard that the jockey never pulled out the whip on her because she didnt need it. wow, this is amazing. this horse was a miracle to the horse racing business. poor thing.

There's a famous chapter in the book 'Burning From The Start'--Jacinto laid the whip on her in her first race, even though the trainer told him not to. Afterwards, the trainer--Frank--started yelling, swearing, and asking why he had cropped her. Jacinto is just like, o.o, and "She was already so fast. I just wanted to see what she would do."
Sadly, the movie didn't do the scene accurately or justice--I guess they wanted to keep the language somewhat appropriate. xD

When Ruffian was buried, he gave her his very best blankets because he knew she deserved them. He also swore that no other horse would ever be worthy of entering that stall as long as he owned that barn..

My grandpa owns race horses and one of his best filly's died. Like on dreamer. She almost had it, but right before the finish she flipped over head first. great movie.
