thank you so much for making this vid! its much easier to practice them now that i know exactly what im doing (1&4 fingers) and what sounds(octaves) they make!
Hi Prof V, I just started w/artifical Harmonics this wk w/Mildred Zitt. She is taking the approach from Paul Rolland's series. I very much like your demonstration but was looking for more help?? I guess to reinforce what my teacher was attempting to teach. Well, I'll be back w/her Monday. Off for study now after I replay this again. Thanks
Thank you for this. I'd embarassingly forgotton how to play the artificial harmonics in La Fille Aux Cheveux De Lin after not playing regularly for a few years.
This is wonderful! This is the first time i came across these lessons. I'll be able to see if all this answers some of my remaining problems, which no one else seems to have!
Hello Todd, I'm curious to know how you find out where natural harmonics are. They seem to be too much in a pattern for it to be random. Do you just have to know where they are, or has someone cracked the code?
@nellievic they are at equal divisions of the vibrating portion of the string, the first harmonic(octave) is halfway, second harmonic is one third and two thirds along vibrating portion of string(octave and fifth), then quarters of the string(two octaves), then fifths(two octaves and a major third).
i have a question! it has nothing to do with harmonics, though.
Okay so, my teacher is really old and isnt very good...anyways, i have been holding my violin very wrong! like, my thumb comes up over the fingerboard. So ive been practicing with my thumb completely underneath. basically my thumb is supporting the fingerboard. if that makes any sense O.o
anyways, Ive deffinantly seen a difference in how i play and im just wondering if that is considered "incorrect" also?
@xnikilodianx there is actually no definite correct positioning for the thumb... find what is best for your... but teacher's will often insist on some position... in my case for example, my thumb stick way up... as for my teacher, his thumb is not sticking up.... and neither of us is necessarily wrong...
wow... i first encountered artificial harmonics when we were reading this piece for the orchestra and i did not know what they were... thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks for the lesson, Todd! I wanted to to learn how to play harmonics for my ng to ryiorchestra. The Elliot Del Borgo music uses so many harmonics. I'm trying to tune with natural harmonics, but how do I?
Hi, It's the same rest (Flesch with the hump), but I added blocks of wood to make it even higher! I've wanted to try the SAS though, and may pick one up.
Todd, thank you for the refresher. I am an adult player who just picked up the violin again after many years off, and your instructions, as always, are top notch. Many thanks.
Hello Teacher Todd, can you come up a video teaching us the proper way of pressing the strings? any tips? as well as vibrato(detailed). would be of good help to understand some good insights from an expert. Thanks in advance
this guy's great.

why are artificial harmonics used as opposed to real harmonics?
jbcoyer 7 months ago
@jbcoyer because its much faster to play an armonic than switch two octaves above?

I think that was a good tute, well done =) Covered everything really well and explained better than I could do a thousand words

Im playing the Bartok Pe loc and this was very helpful. How do you do vibrato on artificial harmonics to make it sound pretty?

But, do you have a lesson on DOUBLE harmonics?
If not, can you make one?

Nice sound... You got the pronounciation of "Pe" ok but it's not "loch" it's "lok" with an "o" from "violin"... it means On the spot or In one place.
I'm thinking of getting a violin myself. Thanks for the lessons.
