This was my dad's favorite movie when I was a kid and I remember the several times me, him, and my brother really enjoyed watching this film together. Thanks for posting
america is just as responsible for the atrosities committed as the germans america funded hitler it was bushes grandfather who had ties to hitler and germany i think its funny how people glamorize war.
This is one of the greatest films--not just greatest war films, but greatest films--of all time. Superbly acted & directed. And Elmer Bernstein's score is classic!
It´s disgusting, and actually makes me feel debased knowing that i'm belonging to the same species that were, and still are, committing crimes against humanity. The real world however isn't some binary space of good& evil. It happened on all sides, in any war. Whether POWs were starved, tortured or executed.
You can't compare any war crimes (except hiroshima) that the allies commited during WWII to the horrors and attrocities that were commited by Hitler's Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS and Gestapo.
Not to mention Japanese war crimes: Even worse than the Nazis. See the movie, *The Great Raid*. A good companion double feature to watch with *The Great Escape*.
You can find it here on YT. *The Great Raid* came out in '05. Stars Ben Bratt & James Franco, as well as Joe Feinnes, Martin Czokas, and the wonderful Connie Nielsen. About the brilliant, intrepid raid on the Jap POW camp a Cabanatuan, Philippines, the repository of the last survivors of the Bataan Death March. Acting & direction is spot-on, & Trevor Rabin's heroic, poignant score brings tears to one's eyes. SEE THIS FILM! Double-feature it w/*The Great Escape*. Know real heroism!!
You ain't seen nothing till you see what the Japs do in *Great Raid*. The Nazis merely **shot** the Fifty (which is, of course, atrocious enough...), but witness what the **Japs** did at **their** POW camps in the Philippines!! I won't spoil it for anyone by telling...just watch the movie! It's a tear-jerker, and a superbly moving, inspiring film.
Seeing what these guys got up to actually made me feel proud to be a MAN.
If this film was made today, you can be sure they wouldn't be content to show it like this. There would have to be some kind of 'romantic angle', there'd be a feisty woman or two (who run rings round the guys and make them look like a load of clowns), and some other politically-correct crap. It wouldn't be a film about a bunch of great guys facing hardship with optimism and guts !!
The murder of the men who were captured after escaping from Stalag III was a key part of the prosecution's case during the Nuremburg Trials..........Goering in particular was questioned about the murders and the guilty verdict that was handed to him was partly for the murder of the Great Escapees.
klassetompa lets see you escape from a german P.O.W camp and then get out of germany and out of any other occupied part of europe with the SS chasing you the whole way so dont even say it was a failure its better than you could have done you probaly would have been shot 1 foot from the camp fence
I've been looking forward to this seeing this movie again. Thanks for posting. I think the ones on the ship got away and the one with the Big Brief case.
the idea is to escape and keep out of the camp for as long as they can so it will keep the Germans busy while the war is going on they weren't just escaping to get away
They're not removed because of blueray and hi-def! Films like this should be owned and seen (and heard)properly. This is the best advertisment for buying it that's possible.
Commondant was relieved of duties because of the "successful" escape and the SS coming in to take over the running of the camp as he was Luftwaffe command.

My dad took us to see this movie when I was young. I remember he got a real kick out of the end scene with the young German guard's reaction to The Cooler King's baseball bouncing routine.
My dad joined the Navy in '39 and served active duty for 20 years before retiring as a Lt. My mom said he could have been promoted more except for his slight resistance to authority :) Dad passed away from a brain tumor at 48. He worked for the Virginia Employment Commission helping young people find jobs.
Thats an amazing scene. Its like catch me, so what? I'll just escape again. Summed up in one scene the spirit of the guys involved in the real thing. Total heroism and determination. Amazing courageous men.
If not for one idiot, everyone would have had an excellent chance of escaping. This is now one of my all time favourite movie, thanks for the post. PLEASE KEEP 'EM COMING!!!!!
i remember seeing this film the very first time, it stayed in my memory because it was the day both my parents were killed in a head on car crash, both died in complete agony a week later in Hospital. my sister was a passenger and she lost both legs and an eye, my dad was too drunk to control the car, the autopsy revealed he was 25 times over the limit. i was 12 at the time and had to be taken in to care. i'm out now, I'm 33 and i am an alcoholic.
I always wish that at the end of this movie, Bartlett would come walking through the gates to the camp and say, "I'm not dead! Neither is Macdonald. Or Cavendish. Or Blythe. Or anybody else. This was all just a big prank!"
:( it never happens!!! Oh well, they would've been lying about the truth if they did that. The Great Escape's still the best movie I've ever seen. Thanks for uploading it. I don't know what I would've done without you! Seriously. I didn't wanna buy the movie so thanks!

Well, in order to be precise, it's better to distinguish SS (and Waffen SS) and Gestapo from the Wehrmacht...
Especially talking about war crimes...
For the ones crying for Hiroshima I kindly remember that, about atrocities, the Japanese were the worst...
Talking about movied I'd kindly suggest you "The Men Behind the Sun".
If you can stand watching of course...

Well, it means a different kind of "Great".

Why did the German Officer leave at 7:17?
ajbgatorgirl 3 years ago
He was "relieved" of his command over the camp...most likely for 2 reasons.
1. The escape occurred in the first place.
2. He spoke too much about the execution of "The Fifty".
