  • @wwIIgamer1 Whoa... a month later and I am staying up to exactly 2:31AM to watch all 16 parts. And the cycle continues lol. Great movie.

  • This was my dad's favorite movie when I was a kid and I remember the several times me, him, and my brother really enjoyed watching this film together. Thanks for posting

  • Steve McQueen wasn't captured he went back to get his glove, ball and kill the guard who killed the Scots

  • america is just as responsible for the atrosities committed as the germans america funded hitler it was bushes grandfather who had ties to hitler and germany i think its funny how people glamorize war.

  • WONDERFULL:::::

  • I like this movie ! 5/5 so good movie

  • This is one of the greatest films--not just greatest war films, but greatest films--of all time. Superbly acted & directed. And Elmer Bernstein's score is classic!

  • Murdering prisoners of war. It makes me sick to actually think that this was the level of deprevasion the Nazis stooped to.

  • It´s disgusting, and actually makes me feel debased knowing that i'm belonging to the same species that were, and still are, committing crimes against humanity. The real world however isn't some binary space of good& evil. It happened on all sides, in any war. Whether POWs were starved, tortured or executed.

  • You can't compare any war crimes (except hiroshima) that the allies commited during WWII to the horrors and attrocities that were commited by Hitler's Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS and Gestapo.

  • Not to mention Japanese war crimes: Even worse than the Nazis. See the movie, *The Great Raid*. A good companion double feature to watch with *The Great Escape*.

  • Cheers, I'll look out for that

  • You can find it here on YT. *The Great Raid* came out in '05. Stars Ben Bratt & James Franco, as well as Joe Feinnes, Martin Czokas, and the wonderful Connie Nielsen. About the brilliant, intrepid raid on the Jap POW camp a Cabanatuan, Philippines, the repository of the last survivors of the Bataan Death March. Acting & direction is spot-on, & Trevor Rabin's heroic, poignant score brings tears to one's eyes. SEE THIS FILM! Double-feature it w/*The Great Escape*. Know real heroism!!

  • Well, in order to be precise, it's better to distinguish SS (and Waffen SS) and Gestapo from the Wehrmacht...

    Especially talking about war crimes...

For the ones crying for Hiroshima I kindly remember that, about atrocities, the Japanese were the worst...

Talking about movied I'd kindly suggest you "The Men Behind the Sun".

If you can stand watching of course...

  • You ain't seen nothing till you see what the Japs do in *Great Raid*. The Nazis merely **shot** the Fifty (which is, of course, atrocious enough...), but witness what the **Japs** did at **their** POW camps in the Philippines!! I won't spoil it for anyone by telling...just watch the movie! It's a tear-jerker, and a superbly moving, inspiring film.

  • Great film !!

Seeing what these guys got up to actually made me feel proud to be a MAN.

If this film was made today, you can be sure they wouldn't be content to show it like this. There would have to be some kind of 'romantic angle', there'd be a feisty woman or two (who run rings round the guys and make them look like a load of clowns), and some other politically-correct crap. It wouldn't be a film about a bunch of great guys facing hardship with optimism and guts !!

  • rite one man!

  • The murder of the men who were captured after escaping from Stalag III was a key part of the prosecution's case during the Nuremburg Trials..........Goering in particular was questioned about the murders and the guilty verdict that was handed to him was partly for the murder of the Great Escapees.

  • klassetompa lets see you escape from a german P.O.W camp and then get out of germany and out of any other occupied part of europe with the SS chasing you the whole way so dont even say it was a failure its better than you could have done you probaly would have been shot 1 foot from the camp fence

  • at 07:16; why does the SS-Officer speaks english with the german sergeant ?? Little fault of the director...

  • no, it's so the audiance can understand what the're saying duh!

    no fault

  • yep.

  • i love the end when he just goes back to bouncing the ball and the guard is like.... wtf

  • One of my favorite movies, and one of the greatest movies of all time, some critics would disagree, but critics can suck a dick.

    This movie rocks!

  • I new Bronson would escape, the guy with him I think is a singer from the early 60s, I think it was called Jonnie remember me

  • anyone know what ever happened to the men who escaped but were recaptured into the camp?

  • they were made into sausage

  • Great actors great script great story and great times watching this movie , thanks.

  • Thank you for this

    Great Movie

    McQueen Rules!!!

  • shut up its agreat movie you yank bastard

  • Well at least a few men escaped. :)

  • I've been looking forward to this seeing this movie again. Thanks for posting. I think the ones on the ship got away and the one with the Big Brief case.

  • the idea is to escape and keep out of the camp for as long as they can so it will keep the Germans busy while the war is going on they weren't just escaping to get away

  • I'd call this Prison break before Micheal Scoffield and Lincoln burrows.

    What do you think?

  • 1:27 is horrible

  • ok i dont understand why they where treated so nicley with freedom i just dont understand it but this film is the best film ever and im 13

  • They are prisoners of war. It is not a concentration camp.

I think there was some kind of policy that the Nazis had to give them some freedom.

  • theres only about 4 camps all around europe where they were death camps.

theres very little information about them because they were mostly destroyed and covered by the germans

  • Thanks for uploading this great movie!

  • They're not removed because of blueray and hi-def! Films like this should be owned and seen (and heard)properly. This is the best advertisment for buying it that's possible.

  • I didnt know that harrison ford was in this film

  • he's not

if you are referring to the guy on the train they just share a resemblance. It does look like him though.

  • lol Hilts is going to drive the Nazi's on cooler patrol inSANE.

  • I love the scene at the end where Hilts returns to the camp after another failed escape attempt at receives respect from all sides..

  • well, it's kinda hard NOT to respect the dude...i mean, after what he did w/ the motorcycle? amazing.

  • The ball bounces again, hahaha!!!

  • "Your German is good...and I hear also your French...your hands UP!"

  • this is the best movie i`ve ever seen :D

  • The Scrounger AKA Jim Rockford

  • Why was he put back in the cooler. The war would have been over if their officer was there.

  • in the real escape the German general was arrested for black market profit. The escape occured March 1944

  • Commondant was relieved of duties because of the "successful" escape and the SS coming in to take over the running of the camp as he was Luftwaffe command.

  • After seing this film, you can speak english, german and french :-)

  • Thanks so much for posting.

  • i cried the first time i saw this movie, such a sad ending

  • Superb~!

  • 3 got away and fifty got shot, not exactly a "great escape!"

    Great film though, oh aye!

  • it was going to be all 73 caught but Goering pleaded for only 50. This is based on a true story

  • WHAT????

  • when the real escape occured Hitler wanted to kill them all but Goering settled on 50 because he feared that British/USA would kill German pilots

  • HA we did that anyway.

  • u didn't know that? it said so @ the beginning in this very fancy red lettering.

  • Well, it means a different kind of "Great".

Like when referring to WWI as "The Great War". There was nothing "great" about it, was there?

    Or the Great White Shark?

I know you get the idea but "Great" has more than one meaning.

  • Great classic of all times......last time I saw this movie was thirty two years ago.thank you for the upload.I was a child when I first saw it back than.

  • ok thanks for answering!

  • Why did the German Officer leave at 7:17?

  • He was "relieved" of his command over the camp...most likely for 2 reasons.

    1. The escape occurred in the first place.

    2. He spoke too much about the execution of "The Fifty".

  • I must have missed something, why did the German Officer have to leave? (at 7:17)

  • Thanks for posting. I just saw the whole movie thanks to you....made my 4-hour layover in London much more enjoyable. Thanks!

  • great movie

  • thanks for the upload dude!!!

    awesome!!! five star.....

    great job!!!

  • love it,love it,thanks

  • One of the most exciting movies ever made, alongside with GUNGA DIN, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, DIRTY DOZEN, A MAN ESCAPED, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and GUNS OF NAVARONE.

  • Not to mention Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

  • the german komandant wouldn't talk about their death with such regret

  • What a daft statement. Not all of the germans were evil nazi's you know. A lot were decent human beings.

  • thats right, there are good and bad people in every nation.

  • I don't believe that is what they meant but at the same time I think your wrong about the komandant. He was a regular person doing a job and any normal person would be hurt by the cruel lose of life.

  • Truth, A normal person is someone of decency, as I understand from you that decency'in this scenario'is someone not obeying the The Sixth Commandment(komandant). But people can be persuaded by the community. Turning him,'evil'. For Example, You give someone A bloody nose: You puke, the next time you do it: you fell bad for them, Another time it happens, you walk around like youve seen it and don't care. This man could be extrodinarily normal, but belives for you are in commandments he is Evil.

  • How do you know that the majority were decent? I've read much about WWII, and from what I read, the nation as a whole adored Hitler. What have you read which would lead you to conclude otherwise?

  • At a certain point in office, before the whole Jew thing, Hitler was almost assasinated. If the attampt had suceeded he would have been considered the greatest leader of Germany. That is because he had ideas that were actually positive and that is why people flocked to him at the beginning. Of course when they found out he was a raving lunatic some stuck to him but others found themselves in a world where doubts were fatal. Finally others just went on with their lives.

  • does anybody know the name of the movie where the guy beside asks about hanes is in a movie where he gets killed with arrows by an indian spirit guide at a seance?

  • Oh, and thanks for uploading this :-D

  • Easily one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever; they certainly don't make films today like they used to ;-)

  • A true classic! one I'll never forget!

  • i think Hilts liked getting caught in a way. It was a serious war and stuff, but he liked the idea of cat n mouse.

  • heil!

  • une scene qui m a beaucoup marque et qui est tres injuste ! j ai bcp aime ce film .

  • My dad took us to see this movie when I was young. I remember he got a real kick out of the end scene with the young German guard's reaction to The Cooler King's baseball bouncing routine.

My dad joined the Navy in '39 and served active duty for 20 years before retiring as a Lt. My mom said he could have been promoted more except for his slight resistance to authority :) Dad passed away from a brain tumor at 48. He worked for the Virginia Employment Commission helping young people find jobs.

  • he sounded like a nice bloke,i love the end scene as well, the german officer is amazed how hilts spirit still isnt broken, great movie.

  • Thats an amazing scene. Its like catch me, so what? I'll just escape again. Summed up in one scene the spirit of the guys involved in the real thing. Total heroism and determination. Amazing courageous men.

  • the theme tune always gives me a chill

  • Goosebumps! Evert time I hear it.... and I have watched this movie at least 50 times!

  • If not for one idiot, everyone would have had an excellent chance of escaping. This is now one of my all time favourite movie, thanks for the post. PLEASE KEEP 'EM COMING!!!!!

  • I always wish that at the end of this movie, Bartlett would come walking through the gates to the camp and say, "I'm not dead! Neither is Macdonald. Or Cavendish. Or Blythe. Or anybody else. This was all just a big prank!"

:( it never happens!!! Oh well, they would've been lying about the truth if they did that. The Great Escape's still the best movie I've ever seen. Thanks for uploading it. I don't know what I would've done without you! Seriously. I didn't wanna buy the movie so thanks!

  • I absolutely love this movie, thank you.

  • thanks so much for uploading this it really is an amasing film isn't it!

  • I saw this movie when I was a Child it has been a pleasure to see it again, thank you father for your time, and thanks to the person who took enough time to make us happy...

  • indeed, a brilliant movie

  • First timeI have seen it in years - forgotten how brilliant the film was - and how tragic the real life outcome was. Thanks for taking the time to upload this!

  • no problem

  • The film was dedicated to the 50 who were murdered by SS. The real people who escaped (what the film was based upon) weren't the Brits and yanks but from all over. Love James Coburn character in film with massive suitcase!!

  • a great movie thank you for posting it.

  • Only 4 actors of these are still alive. Best film of Escape ever made! I love it and I can watch it all the time.

  • love it I have seen the whole movie now thanks thanks!!
