Not a few hundred feet. Regulated diverse altitude was most truly follow by the two flight crew on both airplanes.
This is normal air traffic and probably took place close to a waypoint where two airways cross each other. Its even more cool when you see it att night. Flying the east coast of USA for an example att night you will see alot of lights meet you in a amazing speed,,,naturly ,o)
Dressing up like a fighter pilot and hanging around in bars comment earlier, seven years ago we were at a patio bar the same weekend the Toronto air show was on. This 6' 5" dude in a navy flight suit sat next to us on a Saturday night. Said he was a pilot from the airshow and he flew the F-16. Three questions about flight dynamics he couldn't answer and he proved he was a fake.
@Grouchy58 Something similar happened to me the other week....guy tried telling me he was a pilot, and he couldn't tell me which planes he was checked out on, other than "ye know, the medium sized ones"!!! If he had of expressed his interest in flying, without the BS I might have offered him to join me next time I flew.
@Grouchy58 That's funny. Did you ask him what aircraft he flew before he became an F-16 pilot since the US Navy only has about 4 or 5 F-16's and they use(d) them for aggressor training only?
@323tiim contrails form several hundred feet behind an airplane...after the 747 passed under us, we rode the contrails for hours like railroad tracks...as our KLM 747 got over Ottawa, and made a slight left turn to land in Toronto, this 747 continued west, possibly to Chicago.
That was a LOT farther than a few hundred feet! That would only be a couple of wing spans of the other aircraft. Legal seperation is 2000 feet vertical... it was at least that much! 2000 feet is less that half a mile and just looks close when the airplane is that big.
@Grouchy58 Man.... I can't read! Who told you that I could.... I was just overwhelmed by the excitement and total horror of seeing one airplane from another!
@FlightTimeRadioShow right place, right time....134 flights in 50 years, 225,000 kms, and I still get a window seat, and still prefer watching the clouds and scenery instead of the movies...
@FlightTimeRadioShow People miss experiences not looking out the window, like seeing greenland...thats why when I fly back from Schiphol, I always get the right side of the plane, because the ones on the left cant see greenland as we fly over the tip...it's hit and miss, sometimes it flies 200 kms to the south, but when it does hit it, the scenery is awesome....and sometimes, both sides get the view
@FlightTimeRadioShow Actually on the North Atlantic tracks abovr 29,000 ft or more precisely FL290 the reduced vertical separation minima (RVSM) rules in operation only require 1000 ft vertical separation between traffic. Add in to this the +/- 1 or 2 hundred feet tolerance in the altitude reporting equipment and you can see two aircraft can be within say 700ft and still be legally separated.
@FlightTimeRadioShow - Actually on the North Atlantic tracks abovr 29,000 ft or more precisely FL290 the reduced vertical separation minima (RVSM) rules in operation only require 1000 ft vertical separation between traffic. Add in to this the +/- 1 or 2 hundred feet tolerance in the altitude reporting equipment and you can see two aircraft can be within say 700ft and still be legally separated.
I wonder how much separation there is between the two planes. I do know that airspace is divided up. Either all travel east to west is done on either even or odd thousands and trave west to east would be the opposite.
FeroX is right this is very commen and the funny thing is that the people in the low flying planes almost never see the one above but the people in the above almost always see the down plane. so people that fly much can have been in this situation many times without knowing it.
This is common guys, 1000 ft. horizontal seperation or 10 km. vertical...
Common proceedure, but looks like the TCAS system onboard/ATC's corrects the bearing of the two planes (The KLM turns right, and the airplane you were onboard banks to the left afterwards) -Just to make sure about the seperation.
At least 2000ft vertical seperation when flying in the same direction in RVSM airspace. 60NM horizontal when flying over the north atlantic. TCAS only corrects in the vertical plane.
probably a klm flight comming from LAX heading to amsterdam. i saw in one of my last flights from prague to rome a plane with the same distance like in this video only not down but on the right site! looked scary.
thats exactly how it was within 5min of taking off from the schipol airport we saw another KLM boeing 777 coming and preparing to land. it was sooo cool. i was like they probably can see us in our flashy boeing 747.
Look how fast the 747 overtakes the author's aircraft!
On average a B767 does mach .80 an A330-A340 does Mach .82, 777 .83...
The 747 goes all the way up to M.86!
All this is very routine, also in the cockpit, the pilots have this thing called TCAS, Traffic Collision Avoidance System, it works with the transponder system of the radio and signals each aircraft in your vicinity, it will even warn when you come too close and send an evasive guide signal in case you come too close!
there is no overtaking.2 different routes, they are just crossing.the 747 is heading a few degrees right.airliners never fly full speed.they follow an cost index of the airline and keep the fuel costs as low as possible.
once the plane I was flying was crossed by another plane (it was a AA plane) that our plane shook a little after the plane passed under us. Everyone didn't mention a word we were all just staring at each other like saying 'did that just happened?' I wish I have had a camera to tape that...it was scary!
in this case they where 2000ft apart, if you travel in both directions RVSM it has to be all the even FL's on the way to the US, odd's to europe, on the atlantic crossing you need to stay on your FL as well till you come under radar coverage again.
every time ive seen a plan pass by the one im on at around this distance, theyve passed within a second or so and seem to be traveling at MUCH faster speeds than what this one is.
While ir appeared that the two aircraft were close to each other (we rarely get to see it), they were further apart than you might think... It can be deceiving, due to the size of the 747, the lack of background reference, etc.. There was never any issue with regard to safety here.
