This is the best adaptation of the book to film. It is theatrical but not vulgar. The script is perfect and the direction outstanding. The acting is so natural and true to the characterizations in the book that it is miraculous. Also, the background music actually moves the story and supplies a depth of feeling that is rarely found in feature films. Bravo!
(continued) Personally I'm like Mia. I do not cry when I am emotionally expressing myself but because I don't cry does not mean it is any less passionate. I think both gave a very moving delivery but many don't agree because we are all emotionally made so differently. Perhaps we cling to a Jane we can relate to in some way. Others may choose to like a Jane that's closest to the book but I still think that secretly we all ask at one point Which Jane am I?Maybe I'm wrong
I think why there are so many women who feel strongly and differently about how Jane handled herself in the proposal scene is because maybe they put themselves in her place and ask themselves 'what would I do?' and for the majority of women they might be more like this Jane who was clearly very emotional. Where as fewer would be like Mia and express themselves clearer through words.
@ThiiNatawii I couldn't agree more. I like Mia's Jane bc life made her tough... and as she says, obscure. So it's harder for her to break down in front of people but it's nice that Mia's Jane breaks down at the end but not from the beginning
I love this movie.. This version i think is very well put together, all the small details this scene is very romance I wonder how there made the lighting happen.. I watch this movie over and over again...
There is no much passion and love, you can't help but feel it along with them! The 2011 scene is so stale and passionless in comparison, 2006 all the way!
I've read this passage in the book over and over again and I still struggle with some pieces of it. In the book, he gets sort of excited when she says she has no family (after the proposal) and keep talking under his breath about being atoned. I can't tell if this is some sort of foreshadowing? or is he taking advantage of her on some weird level, because he knows that he has less of a chance of being discovered as a bigamist because Jane has no one to look out for her?
@JoHeartsArt yes, I have. I love Tim Burton, though, and Disney actors tend to be crap, anyway, so she was the best in the crap talent, all apart from Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly, course.
@devilschild323 Jane Eyre, i mean. she was perfect as Jane Eyre and no, she's not a crappy actress. have you seen Mia on the tv show In Treatment and in the films The Kids Are All Right and Restless? she's amazing ! but well, that's just my opinion..
Despite being far more partial to the 2011 version, this is beautiful. I remember watching this when I was nine or ten, and that was when I really fell in love with the story. It's my favorite book.
even though i've only seen the trailer to this yrs film adaptation, but seen all the episodes fully for this tv series version with Ruth and Toby. i personally definately prefer this 2006 version. and imo its the best adaptation of Jane Eyre.

@tubbymctubsta It's true that, at 24, Ruth was too old (although not WAY too old!), but there have only been two other actors who were younger - Samantha Morton and Mia Wasikowska, both 20.

I always thought that Mr.Darcy is a dandy. Rochester is the real gem. The tarnished sexy passionate Byron character. And mature man young girl love is hot! Jane Eyre is the most romantic novel ever.
@mafediso Its all on youtube :) and i must say it is the most fabulous version I've ever seen of Jane Eyre. It really makes you feel and understand the characters.
I loved this novel so so much, I've read it so many times, and English is not my language but I'm so disappointed to see the movie.Overall the movie is v good but its actually I'm sorry to say wrong choice of casting.. especially Jane eyre ,her face her mouth overall she might be best but totally wrong choice for this character, and male actor in some scenes he match but at some he don't seem like Mr. Rochester.

@andre88rl That's true, Jane Eyre fans definitely have a lot to pick from for movie favorites, and while I don't think Michael Fassbender was the best Rochester, he is damn fun to look at :p
this looks like drama school overacting! I actually believe William Hurt is Mr Rochester and Jane should be plain, not ugly...in this i'm almost waiting for the director to shout CUT! and whats with the wobbly camera. 1996 Jane Eyre and 1995 Pride & Prejudice..
They had such great chemistry in this series. That's not something easy to create, despite excellent source material. Passion and true connection are the things I always relate to Rochester and Jane - Toby and Ruth portrayed this magnificently.
I LOVE this movie and the book! one of the most beautiful romantic stories EVER. It makes me cry like so much, especially the ending <3 Rochester is hot in this one ;)
"In listening, I sobbed convulsively; for I could repress what I endured no longer; I was obliged to yield, and I was shaken from head to foot with acute distress. When I did speak, it was only to express an impetuous wish that I had never been born, or never come to Thornfield. [...] The vehemence of emotion, stirred by grief and love within me, was claiming mastery [...]" ... I don't get why you people say that she wasn't supposed to act this way. This one is my favorite adaptation so far.
I have no idea if this is more funny or ridiculous when people are arguing which adaptation is better - 2006 or 2011. I personally think they are both great . I can only say that as a woman who is watching another woman in love with her employer I would behave more like Mia - less emotional then Ruth because my own pride wouldn't let me show how to him how heartbroken I am. But that's just me.
Yes, I know the book, there's no need to remind me it. I just said what I would do being in her position. And because of that I prefer 2011 version. Mia as Jane is more similar to my own character. Ruth is great and more truthful to the book but I still choose Mia. I do not judge what performance is better. I can enjoy them both. That's all. Have a nice day.
Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson, I cry watching this every single time. Fantastic performances. One of my favourite box sets. The 2011 film has a HELL of a lot to live up to.
I think the 2011 version is better, Mia Wasikowska doesn't blubber about. I mean, in her lines she claims to be the strong women but then cries and falls into his arms like he expects her to. In the more recent film Wasikowska stands her own and appears as independent as she says to be.
That was absolutely wonderful...Edward finally meet his real Love...Not one who was forced onto him and then decieved him later...You deserve Jane Eyre..Love this Novel.
You know, we're crazy about Stephens as the brusque CHARMING Mr. Rochester, but Ruth WIlson makes an excellent Jane Eyre here. She is so heartfelt in this. I am completely on her side!
I adore this version. There is SO much chemistry between this two...no other version can be better, everything fits in this one! Every gesture, every look they give each other...sooo romantic <3
Oh my God, yes!!!! Mia is terrible as Jane. And Rochester never had Blonde hair or Blue eyes, and neither did Jane. They are both really plain, and i beieve that is a very important point that the new film totally overlooked.
There is something about this scene that is so authentic, this BBC version is far better than the silly new adaptation, they all cant act!! Besides, this is exactly how Ive always imagined Rochester.
@gearsofmom I couldn´t agree more! Mia is underacting and stays calm in the scenes where you expect her to show some feelings..anger, love or hatred...nothing happens... :) BBC version rules.
@QuietlyCurious I actually liked Mia better. Jane wasn't suppose to come across so sad, stubborn and frustrated- yes, but not bawling her eyes out. It makes her seem almost pathetic, and I think that Mia shows more of the respect that Jane's character demanded. In this version it appears that Jane needs Mr. Rochester more than he needs her, and that is not the way that the book portrays the character.
@sarziez Remember that 8 pages of the book are condensed into under 5 minutes of screentime (as is JE11), so events are hastened by necessity. And, yes, Jane "sobbed convulsively". As far as Jane not needing R, I would urge you to reread the book - espec. the section where Jane returns from Gateshead. Also, Jane tells R that it strikes her with terror & anguish to be torn from him. Lastly, during their engagement,Jane tells us that R has become her whole world, her "idol".
I watched and rewatched and rewatched this scene a hundred times and I feel as if my breast explodes with emotion every time I watch it.
Ruth Wilson perfectly covers the role of Jane Eyre in this scene, emotional and sensible and Toby Stephens, oh my wonderful Toby, he's the perfect Mr Rochester, the perfect man. There is no scene in the whole miniseries where I can say that he's not PERFECT in what he does.
Yes, he's handsome, but I think that at those times the beauty ideals were different
I know Many people think that mia's portrayal of a restrained Jane in the 2011 adaptation is truer to the novel. However, I have to disagree... Jane is a passionate character locked within a restrained society. It is in this scene where she gets to reveal her true passionate nature and confess her feelings to Rochester. I feel like Ruth's Jane covers this idea a lot more faithfully: though Jane struggles to contain herself she eventually lets her feelings show. however, I think Mia's Jane is su
@x0xKillerPenguinsx0x Ruth Jane showed emotion too soon, not just when her emotions overwhelmed her. She came across as whimy and needy, and Jane's character was too stubborn and she had too much self-respect to come across as this emotional. I liked Mia better because Jane was just as angry as she was sad. Ruth is just kind of a mess.
I love how he holds on to her even when she begs to be let go. He knows a true girl's heart; When we think we know what we want, he knows the truth. And for him to be so panicked at losing her... it makes me want to cry every time I watch this. Bravo, Mr. Stephens, you are an excellent Mr. Rochester.
@bmbleB95 NO!!! He is the BEST Mr Rochester ;D The new one doesn't have the heart of Mr Rochester.. And Ruth is much better than Mia nin showing feelings...
I watch these montages on youtube and wish I was handy enough with a computer to do this myself... Video is beautifull. I have loved the book since age 11, that´s when I first disgovured it. Every time there was a movie adaptation an tv I wanted to see it... Toby Stevens is the best Rochester for me and Timothy Dalton gets to be number 2
This version is by far the best of all of them. Although there are parts in the movie that are not in sync with the book, Toby and Ruth capture the essence and passion of their characters.
I like this version of the proposal scene a heck of a lot better than the new jane eyre movie one. Ruth Wilson just taps into her emotions so well and vividly that I cry with her when she expresses how she feels about leaving Mr. rochester and Thornfield. I did not find myself doing that in the new movie.
@amidthephantomsrose totally agree with you. The movie scene for this looks so stale and boring. These guys really make you connect with the character and feel what they are feeling!
There are still Gentlemen out there but most are gone because the media shows that being an as$hole gets you more girls plus most Gentlemen Get rejected cause they prefer the bad boy.. v.v
I'll admit the acting here was good, however I preferred the 2011 version. Jane comes off as a blubbering baby in this scene. I never imagined her speaking like this in the novel. I feel the newer version did this scene more justice, despite the fact that some call it "wooden." Jane was strong and independent and Mia, I felt, portrayed that while still being able to tear up and show the necessary emotions for this scene. Also, this woman looks WAY too old to be playing Jane Eyre. "Girl" indeed.
this one series I would pay for the dvd, it was that good. I hope the movie coming out can match the brilliant performances of these actors because I can't see how this tour de force can be matched or bettered.
Throughout the entire book you can feel Jane's extreme strength and pride whatever she says or does, even in this scene in which she's struggling not to show Rochester how much she's affected by what he's telling her: It is indeed said in the book that she cannot hold on her tears but it is also specified that she remains very discrete in front of him: so why the hell is this Jane weeping like a little child? I'm not sure this actress and I have read the same book, that is not C. Brontë's Jane!

@IndianaSalome Jane cries real but silent tears until Rochester makes the comment about the nightingale. Then we read: "sobbed convulsively" "shaken from head to foot with acute distress" "vehemence of emotion", etc. Restraint and discretion are gone. Jane Eyre is a PASSIONATE woman!
I watched the new 2011 version with Mia Wasichowska and Michael Fassbender, and I liked it more than this one. I think in that version, they're a bit more restrained. In this scene, for an example, Jane doesn't cry as much, had a firmer delivery, and because of that, IMHO, her words had more impact. She looked like a tougher person with the way she was heartbroken but still managed to hold herself together. But I'll take all the adaptations I can get, because this is an awesome book!
@jenkenlee Are you serious? this scene is SO BEAUTIFUL! in the new version it seems like she doesn't put her whole heart in it and there's NO chemistry between the actors. LOOK AT THESE TWO! I totally bawled my eyes out in this scene, i mean who WOULDN'T?
@xysgirl94 I totally agree. There is unbelievable chemistry between Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson. They may not be the most "authentic' interpretations as regard to appearances and temperaments of the characters.
But boy, do I love to see this pair together on the screen! The 2011 version, sign, too wooden, lackluster, and
I loved this book before, and all the versions of movies; but I swear...this one has something none of the others have. It's called....Toby Stephens. Emily Bronte wrote it with HIM in mind.
I watched this video thousands of times and I was always looking at it from Jane's view but today I saw Mr. Rochester's view. When Jane said "you have a wife!" he was anxious and asked "what do you mean?" Just, watch his face, that there are lots of things behind it. This piece is absolutely beautiful. No one could ever pictured it as best as they did!!
@2:10 he's so scared that she knows and then she's like Blanch and he's like "psshh".

I can only say that as a woman who is watching another woman in love with her employer I would behave more like Mia - less emotional then Ruth because my own pride wouldn't let me show how to him how heartbroken I am. But that's just me.
sumiregusa23 7 months ago 3
@sumiregusa23
Yes, but the point is that Jane DOES lose all pride at this juncture.
" The vehemence of emotion, stirred by grief and love within me, was claiming mastery..."
supergran1000 6 months ago
Yes, I know the book, there's no need to remind me it. I just said what I would do being in her position. And because of that I prefer 2011 version. Mia as Jane is more similar to my own character. Ruth is great and more truthful to the book but I still choose Mia. I do not judge what performance is better. I can enjoy them both. That's all. Have a nice day.

I LOVE this scene!! It's so emotional, and both Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens do an amazing job!!!
Best Jane Eyre adaption EVER!!!
hopelessromantic1311 7 months ago 4
Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson, I cry watching this every single time. Fantastic performances. One of my favourite box sets. The 2011 film has a HELL of a lot to live up to.
MissMillie29 7 months ago
I think the 2011 version is better, Mia Wasikowska doesn't blubber about. I mean, in her lines she claims to be the strong women but then cries and falls into his arms like he expects her to. In the more recent film Wasikowska stands her own and appears as independent as she says to be.
ps Michael Fassbender is waayyyyy finer!

You know, we're crazy about Stephens as the brusque CHARMING Mr. Rochester, but Ruth WIlson makes an excellent Jane Eyre here. She is so heartfelt in this. I am completely on her side!

EmmaWatsonStar 8 months ago 4
Oh my God, yes!!!! Mia is terrible as Jane. And Rochester never had Blonde hair or Blue eyes, and neither did Jane. They are both really plain, and i beieve that is a very important point that the new film totally overlooked.
There is something about this scene that is so authentic, this BBC version is far better than the silly new adaptation, they all cant act!! Besides, this is exactly how Ive always imagined Rochester.
gearsofmom 8 months ago 7
@gearsofmom I couldn´t agree more! Mia is underacting and stays calm in the scenes where you expect her to show some feelings..anger, love or hatred...nothing happens... :) BBC version rules.

Domigp09 5 months ago
@QuietlyCurious I actually liked Mia better. Jane wasn't suppose to come across so sad, stubborn and frustrated- yes, but not bawling her eyes out. It makes her seem almost pathetic, and I think that Mia shows more of the respect that Jane's character demanded. In this version it appears that Jane needs Mr. Rochester more than he needs her, and that is not the way that the book portrays the character.
sarziez 4 months ago 4
@sarziez Remember that 8 pages of the book are condensed into under 5 minutes of screentime (as is JE11), so events are hastened by necessity. And, yes, Jane "sobbed convulsively". As far as Jane not needing R, I would urge you to reread the book - espec. the section where Jane returns from Gateshead. Also, Jane tells R that it strikes her with terror & anguish to be torn from him. Lastly, during their engagement,Jane tells us that R has become her whole world, her "idol".

@sarziez Yes, totally agree!!! :)

I feel like Ruth's Jane covers this idea a lot more faithfully: though Jane struggles to contain herself she eventually lets her feelings show. however, I think Mia's Jane is su
x0xKillerPenguinsx0x 9 months ago 6
@x0xKillerPenguinsx0x Ruth Jane showed emotion too soon, not just when her emotions overwhelmed her. She came across as whimy and needy, and Jane's character was too stubborn and she had too much self-respect to come across as this emotional. I liked Mia better because Jane was just as angry as she was sad. Ruth is just kind of a mess.

By far the best Jane Eyre to date, so much depth and emotion in their performance unlike the soulless remake with Mia Wasikowska

Rochester.

Ruth captured this perfectly.

But I'll take all the adaptations I can get, because this is an awesome book!
jenkenlee 10 months ago 4
@jenkenlee
And why should she be more reserved and hold herself together? Reread the book - Jane literally bawls in the proposal scene.
VeryResurrection 10 months ago
@jenkenlee Are you serious? this scene is SO BEAUTIFUL! in the new version it seems like she doesn't put her whole heart in it and there's NO chemistry between the actors. LOOK AT THESE TWO! I totally bawled my eyes out in this scene, i mean who WOULDN'T?
xysgirl94 10 months ago 4
@xysgirl94 I totally agree. There is unbelievable chemistry between Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson. They may not be the most "authentic' interpretations as regard to appearances and temperaments of the characters.
But boy, do I love to see this pair together on the screen! The 2011 version, sign, too wooden, lackluster, and
as you said, not much sparks of passion there.
