The suburbanization of America also contributed in a large way. The Interstate Highway System made life outside the city possible for millions, causing urban neglect. By the late 30s/early 40s all these places were failing,because the market was changing.
If it wasn't for WW2 giving new life to old manufacturing plants, they would of been history.
As it stands now Detroit is too over populated for its infrastructure,nothing can ever replace the auto/war manufacturing industry.

@capalonga007 The factories could've been moved to Detroit, with all the space it had, not to mention skilled workers that were unemployed. The problem was that the mentality in Detroit was a stubborn one; there was a lot of anti-technology feeling in Detroit in the 80's. I guess the city wanted something more of a "macho" job for the workers, which is why all the computers were made either in Silicon Valley or in Asia.
