  • Thats how he became famous coshim and this other man done a stage show where the man would challenge anyone to sing, Al would get up and sing beautifully, being a young teenager and such a good singer he would get the crawds hysterical. His parents did'nt parents, especially his father did'nt want him to sing for show cos he thought song should be for the church only. Anyway, one night when he got up to sing, his voice broke. Instead of singing he whistled the melody. This became a trade matk :)

  • my aunt has this on the original record on the old edison record players i listened to it today it was awesome!

  • Jolson Bravo Bravo. It al al the time!

  • Al Jolson is amazing, so is this Juke Box. Does Wurlitzer still make these? I would love to listen to this in a dance hall.

  • @JTrost1234 That's what makes this Juke so amazing and wanted. They made the most famous and most wanted Juke in 1946 and 1947. Then stopped because it was a mechanics nightmare. Too long just to change a lightbulb. Wurlitzer SCRAPPED every '46 &'47 1015 model juke they got back making the model MORE RARE. They do not still make these. They do make many copies, play CDs, 45s, whatever. Ours is the original and ONLY plays 78s as intended back then.

  • @laughdoglaugh

I don't think that's true. The 1015 endeared itself to millions of people; so when the 45 RPM mech came out; they upgraded it. I don't think they destroyed them all...

  • when al jolsen died so went one of the greatest entertainers of all time...

  • Al Jolson at his best: heard and not seen. :)

  • @millbrookmusic

? Listing to him sing a song from the perspective of a black guy in the South is ok, but seeing him painted black isn't?

  • @rangerchallengebravo In 1993 Ted Danson got in trouble for showing up in "black face" in a tribute to his buddy Whoopi Goldberg at the Friars Club. It wasn't cool for Al then in 1927 or Ted in '93.

  • @rangerchallengebravo

Good point! But that's not really what I meant. I just can't stand his face is all. :) Nothing to do with blackface or anything like that.

  • @rangerchallengebravo This was a popular entertainment in those days. They had whole shows that they called Minstrel shows. This is where Al got started after his voice changed. There was nothing wrong with doing shows in black face.

  • My favorite song from 1920

  • Love it!

  • Amazing, cant' get enough Jolson.

  • Nice!

  • GREAT video work, Great juke - more please!

  • every now and then i just love to shout down by the swanee. keeps people on their toes.

  • My Grandmother (Rest in Peace) had me watch the Jolson Story when I was 10..I was hooked...Did Swannee in black face in the 70's..no bigotry just an reinactment of Jolie when he sang as a minstrel. I tore the house dow and gave Larry parks a run for his money.

  • Wait...you 'blacked up' in the 70's?

  • Jusr reading a bio on Jolson. This song was written by George and Ira Gershwin--no wonder the music is top notch. Originally it was sung by a ladies chorus --but tanked until Jolie sang it!

  • Swanee was written by George Gershwin and Irving Caesar in 1919, before George and Ira started working 'seriously' together.

  • That's right--I read that it was Irving Caesar. Sad me--my library book was lost--someone just found it and never turned it in. What will I do?

  • My Daddy is here enjoying modern technology and a favorite from his past

  • wonderful song, wonderful film, wonderful Wurlitzer!

  • wot a song

  • Amen to that. WHAT a SONG! I always loved it. Jolson was great!

  • NOT A KNOCK OFF!!!!!
