I was an idiot to watch this movie after my father unexpectedly passed away. He was with me when we saw it in the movie theatre, and HE cried. Afterwords, he always called me his little princess. I sure do miss him...but, at least I have a wonderful mother, who's WAY better than a Miss Menchin!!
Even though this isn't a true story I sad to think there are actually people like miss mitchin who have to make everyone's life just as miserable as there own
this is the part of the movie adaptions of the story that really confuses me, why did the father have to die in battle and be left penniless from failed business, at the end where he comes back aren't they still just as poor? in the book he dies (4 real) from the the failure of his investment in diamond mines, his friend scamming him and jungle fever. in the end the man next door is the friend and it turns out there were diamonds and she is richer than ever!
@watermelon668 in this movie his company and all assets are taken over by goverment when he turns out to be alive he gets them back. i guess he being alive at the end is more hearth-warming than she turning out to be rich, but still an orphan and so a more "appropriate" ending for the target audience of this movie.
@elarhy yeah i guess, but i hate movies where the main goes through all this emotional development because of a trauma that can be found in real life, and then it just ends up being a flop and there was no problem after all. it makes all the pity i feel for the character seem to have just gone to waste.
i hate that miss minchin felt the need to make everyone else miserable because she was. Unlike some others here, it wasnt the hyrdra that frightened me as a kid, but the indian guy.
Ugh. I'll get millions of hater comments for this. But this is just acfilm people. It's not an excuse for people to boo hoo about their grandfather theynlost when they were four and how alooone they are in the world. We don't care, okay? Also, at the bit where she's crying for her dad in the attic, she should've totally sang Papa Can You Hear Me? Yentil.
There is something that I NEVER understood about this movie:
The scene where Miss Minchin snatches Sarah's locket off of her neck and says, "I could have you arrested for taking this."
Ok, first of all, Sarah's Dad gave her that locket. She was wearing it around her neck since the moment they walked through the doors of the school. Miss Minchin clearly saw Sarah wearing it then. So why would she accuse Sarah of stealing it??? 0_0
if it helps, because sarah became an orphan when they thought her father had died which meant everything she owned became instant property of the school because she was not able to pay all the expensive school fees, so technically the locket no longer belonged to her because it was then property of the school because Ms Minchin was keeping her there out of "charity".
@XxSapsorrowxX Ur correct about Minchin’s reasoning4the locket, but the fees incurred by Sarah couldn’t possibly have exceeded the worth of all the items Sarah had. It’s not a sign of the times so much as Minchin chose to take advantage of a poor girl alone in the world. Frankly her fate at the end of this movie was too good for her.
The worst thing about Sara calling her father alone in the darkness is that millions of girls cried the same way during the world war. Their dad's would never come home.
At 13:50, I always wish that Levinia would slip and fall on the wet floor...would've served her right and it would've given Sara a well-earned laugh. ;)
i really don't like the idea of parent leaving to go to war. I'm disappointed Shirley Temple didn't tell a Indian fairy tale in the original. Captain Crewe is not dead he was confused for someone else in war. its like i always think children are NOT meant to be servants especially orphaned children
Im so sorry to hear that 123456789.. We all lose people in different ways... people good and people bad. Its holding onto how they impacted our life that is the greatest gift. Sty strong, and keep that part of them with you and you'll never be alone :)
I know how she feels...I've never lost a father but, amazingly my grandfather looks just like her father and he died when I was 6. He was everything to me and I never got to say goodbye. He taught me everything. He is just one of the 21 people who have died in my 17 years of life. I really am alone in the world. I have never gone a year without someone dying in my family and I just lost Uncle about 2 Thursdays ago, who was in the Korean War back then and I hate it!!! :'( I feel guilty about all.

Thats how brutal things were back in the 1900's.
Hope that made sense
