  • half of u people couldnt play this solo if u tried, im an all state snare drummer and this would be difficult for me.

  • Very nice! The only problem is playing spot. Needs to stay a little further from the inside of the drum. Other then that wonderful job!

  • what kinda sticks?

  • great playing. but always remember that you never play in the center on a concert snare drum. unless the music asks for. its always a third away from the edge. the drum doesnt ring when you play in the center and you wont get a good quality sound out of it. but good job man. i know your really young. but dont let the bad habits ruin your great playing

  • seems like those flams are hard to play

  • You're so talented! I'm about to be a junior in high school & I play snare, and I think this would be difficult for me XD

  • That is sooo easy to play. I had to play that at a concert for christmas

  • This kid hsould be in Phantom Regiment.

  • Jay, you are indeed a talented drummer! At your age, and with continued playing experience, you will become the Buddy Rich of the 21st Century! I've taught hundreds of drummers over the years and you would be one of the ten best if you were my student. Kudos to your teacher and to you for being so good! BTW I wrote "2040's Sortie" for contests and won lst prize in every single one I entered. But I always practiced hours daily. You should practice daily and work on left hand. Alan Abel, composer

  • where cani get that musicbook?

  • that is my college audition rudimental piece....lol

  • Im a little younger (about a year) than Jay and it looks like i have some catching up to do!

  • @drumpopper97 I'm a lot older than Jay and it looks like I have some catching up to do!

  • very talented

  • He plays well, but he's not gonna make any corps (besides pioneer) any time soon

  • Jay is the next Jeff Queen.

  • bro.. yu are amazing..

  • chops

  • nice job man, keep it up

  • awesome job , dude! you are a skilled musician.

  • nice!!! :)

  • bro you are sooo sick

  • goodshit kid, keep it up

  • If i may ask is he in any drum corps or high school drumline?

  • He deserves to be endorsed by somebody!

  • 8th grade level solo in 6th grade? pretty beast. this kid deserves a beastly snare drum!

  • @minimeiskool This solo is beyond a typical 8th grade level (as in school year) solo. It would actually be appropriate for an advanced high school player, or even as a basic snare solo for a typical college audition. At tempo and with the dynamics, this is a challenging solo.

  • @oldchops how long has he been playing? he has fine technique, great reading skills, and he plays like almost every instrument known to man, lol. Whatta beast! Oyea where do you get all this music for hm, i mean he plays a lot of things, thats quite a lot of money.

  • he would be a great addition to the famu marching 100

  • where did you get the music?

  • il want to see more videos of you and jay

  • good snare sound for a cheap kit

  • @msode21 or for any kit really

  • i say that he auditions for a drum corps in about four years

  • can i buy your skill? at least your flams? im first chair in my band but your seriously good man

  • wow i thought my school band wuz da ish but wowzz i thought completely wrong that one boy can out play all of our snares

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeet, flams are very clean. i like it

  • what state are you in?

  • TN.

  • @oldchops In Nashville?

  • Seriously this kid makes me look like I play like shit

  • dude you're gonna make blue devils some day

  • @tyj0322 Bleh

  • so much control! damn.

  • Definitely DCI material

  • isnt this a parade drum solo? i mean, he has a parade drum right next to him. but he is playing it on a concert snare.

  • thats called a marching snare not a parade drum

  • haha parade drum i like that haha. lol

  • @SouthMoorePIT actually its a parade drum. look in the solo section of your state solo ensemble festival all "marching snare" solos are called parade drum solo's. you are right though, they are called marching snares too. But really, both are the same thing.

  • Dude you are amazing, what grade are you 7th 8th maybe but keep it up and you'll probally be a I&E snare solo champion, or tenor

  • This was actually during the Spring or Summer after his 6th grade year, but before starting 7th grade. He was 12 when this was shot.

  • i love that smile at the end. haha. well done. yeah like someone said below, i play drum set but i wish i had rudiment skills.

  • @CareyBeaufordPortnoy ... i bet this kid plays great on drumset also

  • Flams need some hieight along with Accents, but very impressive

  • Awesome. Keep it up.

  • this is an awsome video.. butt you need to work on your flams some. great vidoeo though!!

  • thats good stuff !!

I play the drums but I wish I had those rudiments and technique!

    Nice video ! 5S

  • try playing some of dci stuff.

  • wow he' BEAST

  • great job jay.... i know u have a lot of comments coming your way... heres my two cents.... you are too mature of a player to be on plastic heads.. a lot of your figures arn't coming out.. listen close.. they get buried on the plastic..fuzzy, not articulate, and someone who doesnt know how good you are might assume they are buzz rolls...

  • that sounds pretty decent for a rydeen :O

  • along with what the people said about keeping the guts vertical, that way, when you need to throw them off in a concert setting you can do it faster.

  • don't have the snares in a horizontal position. that way whenever he is playing piano at the edge he wil still be playing over the "guts", or the snares.

  • Thanks for the advice and for watching!

  • no way! I know him from band camp

  • i guess thats why hes playing in the middle now isnt it

  • awesome!

  • This kid's great!

I'm playing this solo for an audition this year.

  • i believe those are the dave weckl sticks? i like them they're very light but i break them in like a month and i'm an extremely light hitter

  • man some of u ppl need to stop hatin on ppl

  • plez show me how to play your my idol i play guitare but have amazing rithem and would love to learn that

  • His going to be amazing on drum kit!

  • man your like my hero lmao

  • drumset snares arnt made for concert

  • no shit, otherwise they wouldn't be called drumset snares. its just a video of a solo composition anyways.

  • what kind of snare head is this??

  • its a normal one a snare drum

  • its a remo coated ambassador i think

  • who is this kids dad?!

  • very nice very nice

although, when you play quick notes they get much quieter towards the end of a phrase maybe something having to do with the form of the strokes and I think more accents are needed

it would probably take me a while to play it close to this well but remember "it is music not a mathproblem"

  • its not a piece of wood ingrate, its a reelfeel or a practice pad, its less annoying and you don't have to lug around a 35 pound set of $500 tenors or a snare.

  • It's called a practice pad you goon.

  • YOU MISCREANT!!!!

sir i challenge you to a honour duel.

    river at tea time.

    i do say, pistols?

  • that may be true but not necessarily hitting wood it take a lot of practice and hard work this coming from a fellow percussionist

  • Your fucking retarded.

  • the fact that your name contains the word slipknot completely kills any chance of anyone taking your comment seriously

  • Comment removed

  • dude u rock there is no way i can be as good as u

  • Oh man J you got a very good Basic... keep on grooving.... all the best! Work more on you stick rudiments.

  • when you get to high school, youre gonna be the best drummer there

  • As always you held it down so official you da truth Jay. I have now become a fan.

  • great piece and well played

  • is that snare from your drum set? looks like it.

  • Yes.

  • kinda look like tom aungst

  • tomahawk sticks?

  • they are vic firth dave weckls

  • Nope. They are Harvey Moon (or something like that) signature sticks.

  • I believe they are Harvey Moon (or something like that) signature sticks by Vic Firth. Those sticks are somewhere around 6 years old. The are drumset sticks.

  • Clarification- the sticks are Harvey Mason signature sticks, by Vic Firth. These were the sticks that Jay used most, at that time, for concert snare playing.

  • hey i have those! theyve got nice bounce for snare playing

  • Great job buddy! That's a difficult piece of music. I performed it my Junior year of high school...the accents on the singles at the end are crazy!!!

  • those sticks look like tom aungsts..

    are they?

  • Nice sticks, excellent solo. What's the name of that book and piece dude?

  • i just want to no if jay uses vic firth, because they are very good sticks

o and by the way he is very tallented he will gi far in life

  • what kind of sticks are those?

  • hot pink shirt woohoo!!

    :p

  • a marching snare

  • whats the white snare called

  • technicly your supposed to play it match becuase i guess its more formal? but i like him playing traditional it shows he has good control that way and his stick hights are soo consistant super jealous man keep up the good work

  • 1:16 to 1:20 kinda sound like the intro to down with the sickness

  • oh wa ah ah ah

  • omfg it does! rock on dude rock and metal for ever!

  • yeah disturbed rules!!!!

  • i dont think this kid is into rock or metal

  • Nope!!!!!

  • ha it does thats funny

  • loool urr rightt :p

  • O my god all of you people saying concert is supposed to be played matched and marching supposed to be play traditional...shut up!

Its so stupid to say something HAS to be played a certain way, did it not sound good to you?

they are just grips, and they arent forced into any type of music

Just go with what sounds good, thats what matters

  • i never knew that.

  • true

  • good but get a hair cut

  • lmao @ wootpatrol

  • How many years of private lessons has this kid had? Also, who taught him? If I had taken private lessons, had actual drummers for teachers, and practiced by myself, I would be as good as him, but alas, I had Chorus and flute teachers for 3 years who didn't know what they were doing and didn't get private lessons. This year though, I'm getting lessons from my professional drummer of a teacher, so watch out Jay!

  • what type of sticks are those?

  • dude traditional grip is way better than macth! The only thing i like more about match is that i personaly get better roles but other than that traditional is way better. especially for tecnicue. I dont think your right when you say match is better. But the n again its your opinion and i respect that....

  • BADASS.

great job jay, wherever you are!

  • jrome2000, why do you say this young drummer is holding his sticks wrong? Try playing that using the other grip and you are lost. Don't criticize until you know what you are talking about. I have been playing drums 61 years, taught 20 years. Played in all kinds of bands. Maybe you need some real lessons.

  • OMG how old are u? uts suck

  • impressive!! :)

  • Great job.

  • Acually you can hold sticks two way. I agree with you though I hate the tradition hand grip (what he's doing) I like the matched grip

  • He's playing traditonal.

  • YOUR STUPID

  • and how is it wrong?

  • I hated 6th grade percussion... Actually I hated it until 8th grade when I went into the drumline. Now thats some good times. =D

  • think I mean

  • I thimk (this only my opinion) that the snare that you used in this vidio is better for the drum set and the one that you put your clicker on (I call it clicker =)) but that is only what I think.

  • 2040s Sortie!!! :)

  • Awesome playing. Do you tell Jay what to say in his videos?

  • No, but sometimes I'll tell him what not to say.

  • that made me laugh "what not to say" :)

  • on concert snare you should use match grip and leave the metronome on next time you got off really bad during the triplet six features.

  • Where about do you guys live?

  • they live in the mephis area

  • when jay was younger was it his choice to take up percussion, or did his parents want him to do it??

  • It was his choice. As it was his choice to not play percussion in his 6th grade band and instead play/learn the saxophone.

  • it's a good thing too, he would have been bored in 6th grade percussion.

  • Quite impressive.

  • that's a real good snare:

    watch?v=d1xwkU7FWd4

  • omg he is so good i wish i was that good

  • Practice. :)

  • he looks so much older... he is so amazing. how the heck did he get that good?!

  • Practice. :)

  • those snares are really nice..... dont they cost around 700 dollars? because i think our high school has like 3 of those same ones

  • No,actually this is the little 13" snare that came with his $450 Yamaha Rydeen fusion drumset. So, I would guess this snare would be about as cheap as they come, excluding snares from discount general merchandisers (Walmart, etc.). We just experiment with all sorts of things to make it sound as decent as possible, especially when using it as a snare for concert music/solos.

  • hey i bought a mapex pro m seriens snare and stand for 67 dollars wat a bargain. but anyways i look forward to see u in dci man ur great

  • what kind of sticks are those? playin on a concert snare with marching sticks?

  • No, those are not marching sticks. I believe they are an old pair of Firth signature sticks, drum set size sticks with very small tips. Maybe the size of the drum, 13 inches, in comparison is making the sticks look larger to you.

  • ok thanks for clearing that up!

  • nice work you look alot older now idk why keep it up i quit percussion because of my instructors are stupid

  • I'll always be a fan. You improve all the time.

  • dang kid your snare sounds amazing

  • and he defiantly deserves it..kids gonna be amazing

  • We had to do all types of stuff to make that drum sound at least decent. And we are still experimenting since the current set up is not conducive to very soft playing near the rim. We actually know how we will set the drum up, but we just did not do it yet. Thanks for watching!

  • This is an awesome video. Keep it up.

  • good job kid

  • Epic

  • Great job
