The 24-70 f/2.8L is pretty average by modern standards. Very soft wide open, bad corner sharpness even at f/8, distortion, lots of CA at close focus distances, flaring with sunlight, ghosting with bright lights at night, average bokeh, and lots of variation in build quality. Its contrast and color is only medium.

The new Mark II version of the lens runs rings around it in all aspects.

Must be a very rugged lens. I've dropped 2 lenses and I'm 2 for 2 as far as needing them repaired. The Nikon 50mm f/1.4 and the Nikon 85mm f/1.8. I know those lenses are in a different class but maybe it's a brand thing?

It really depends. At 2.8 you can get a more shallow depth of field and also be able to shoot in lower light situation. The IS on the other hand is kind of needed at 105. At 105 you get more camera shake because of the longer focal length. Because of that camera shake, you need the IS to reduce the camera shake which will cause blurr in your image. The 24-70 don't need it because at 70mm it doesn't get as shakey. It would help though!

Back then MACs had the graphical advantage because it was able to use a lot of ram while Windows were handicapped at 4 gigs and lower for the longest time. That is why it was popular among artists back then, but nowadays that isnt true anymore with 64 bit systems available. So there really isnt any performance or quality boost MAC has over PC's. The only difference is the cost and you're paying a lot for apple product.

With the IS I get the same low-light performance as a 2.8 aperture because I can use slower shutter speeds handheld... So why not go for the extra reach and sharpness? Love my 24-105!!

@sarasnee7 You get 3 stops from the IS, so it's as 'fast' as a 1.4 (or 2.0), but you still need more time (1 stop more) to get the light, ... so yeah for fixed objects, it's 'faster', but for moving objects, it's slower ... extra zoom is nice.

I have used both Canon and Nikon extensively with top glass and I have found the following:-

- Canon has more natural colors although the images are softer compared to Nikon. This includes using L glass.

- Nikon has more vibrant colors which appear slightly less natural but still pleasing with extremely sharp glass and better noise performance.

If I could afford it, I would use Canon for portraits and Nikon for everything else.

Both manufacturers are brilliant!

@thedangb28 if you want more zoom 24-105 fursure.... if you want more depth of field 24-70 fursure. I personally would go for the 24-70 because the aperture is so big for a zoom and perfect for low light shots. I do however mainly use my Canon 60D for videos so you're getting this suggestion from a film maker's point of view. But regardless.... you can never go wrong with a big aperture.

Go to digital picture .com there is hardly any difference between them, which is also what camera labs show. So get you're lens fixed Kai. And you can't compare one lens against the other when one is shot at 2.8 and the other at f4.

Whilst both 24/70 & 24/105 are excellent lenses (I have used them both) most wedding photographers seem now to be buying the 24/105 losing the 2.8 but gaining the IS.
