I envy the guy, he's found his niche, and he's right, there's no money in tournament chess. Unless you're a top GM you're going to starve. Doesn't sound like he's making a lot of money at 2 bucks a "lesson" but he's doing what he loves.

He has no need to walk away from it he has found something he loves doing. Chess is not some addiction that is ruining his life. There is nothing wrong with chess or this man. Josh Waitzkin was not impressive because he gave up chess he is remembered because he was beating people at a young age. This man is not insane poor or lonely. You say you "love chess but this man exemplifies what wrong with it" There may be something wrong with it for you but not for the whole world.
