I've killed tons of witches with a chainsaw before alerting them, of course you can do that. It's the easiest way to kill them, well one of the easiest ways anyway. And as someone else said to kill a charger with a mele weapon while it's charging, it's got to be charging at someone else. It's not easy but it can be done.
