Y'know, I was in my 30s before I ever heard it, and yes, my first exposure to it was that Monty Python sketch. I, too, am envious of all those who grew up with this fantastic song! I have made sure this doesn't happen to my children. We sing it every time we're on our way to the zoo. And we make up verses of our own, too! (Lions, giraffes, alligators, kangaroos, etc)

Attractive in a very slightly offbeat, exotic way, there's no denying her talent.
Julie Felix got her break on the Frost Report in the 60s as the resident singer, and was a kindred spirit of Joan Baez in that she sang the same kind of songs, yet it's this kids' favourite for which she will always be remembered. You can find it on the original EP 'Songs From The Frost Report', which is quite hard to track down, but it should also be on one of her early albums which have just been reissued on CD.
I was forced to sing this many times at primary school music lessons. We used to sing, "We're going to the loo (slang for toilet) tommorow. We can do poo, poo ,poo. We're going to the loo. If a few kids sing that and most kids sing "zoo", the music teacher couldn't hear it.
