I bought a new Studio 3 months ago. Played it 5 times, took it to a guitar shop and put it up for $700 less than I paid. IMHO it doesn't play well. The neck is not that good, should have been 24 frets, balance is not good either, and the rosewood is shite. Should be ebony. Wish I had Paul's phone number to tell him.
However.. The hardware, bridge, tuners, pickups, wiring, pots, trem are THE BEST, I've ever touched.
The best guitars I've ever played are my two ESP standard Horizons.
I wish that those narrowfields were covered. I don't know why, but I just really like covered pickups, I guess I like how they look mostly, although people do say they also sound different.......
PRS is okay guitars, tuning stability, fast neck ,decent tone but they hawe crappy sustain, annyone agree? if not which one of their solid boddies hawe ?
@igotwhips I can tell you arent particularly concerned about tone, because the maple top brightens up the sound of the mahogany considerably. no amount of hardware can do that.
I personally love the way the exquisite PRS guitars look! Best thing about them, is the fact they feel and sound as good as they look!
If you want a 'stripped down' version, they have the excellent SE range and the Starla X. Playability and tonal versatility are to be found throughout the range. Great guitars!
@blephara To be historically correct, Paul created the SE line as an abbreviation of student edition so they don't exactly qualify as stripped versions but more like cheaper versions which resemble original PRS'. But they never have the attractive parts as carved tops which in fact are also CNC-built. I can't understand why they think that flat tops are a good alternative to original PRS' :/
@EMG801 nah, its rosewood. you may be forgiven for being wrong, its very dark rosewood. i got 32 inch screen and used 1080p you can clearly see at 1:04 brownish nuances and the wood aint that smooth.
@TheSammyreynolds at lest gibson has tried to make guitars that are decent for less than 2 grand without going to korea. prs you have a 1 in chance of getting a decent guitar that costs 4 grand or you can buy there sh*t korean ones.
@JACKSONLEWISOFCANADA What about the Mira, Starla, NF3, DC3, Mira X, Starla X, 25th Anniversary Mira... And a few for under $2500 are the Swamp Ash Special Narrow Field, DGT, 305.
How many decent Gibsons are there for under $2000? Those '50s reissue ones that they no longer make... That's about it. I expect Canadians to be less ignorant.
@JACKSONLEWISOFCANADA actually most of there korean made guitars play well sound good and made of quality woods and hardware there not and never were intended for professional musicians hence se student edition dumbshit.
@prsplayer210 its not an SE version. its the brand new 2011 PRS Studio. I've played a lot of good guitars, but for $3400 all in, I expected better. Instead of name calling, just do this.. go play an ESP Standard horizon with trem or not for at least 2 hours.
As I said above all the fittings on the PRS are superb.. consider what those ESP guitars would be like if they had the PRS hardware on them.
Lastly, the Horizons are a bit less than $2000. A lot of guitar for the money.
@kasnitch i was replying to someone that said there korean guitars are shit which there not there made with high standards of quality control. i know what a the difference beetween a prs thats made in america and one thats and se. seeing as i have a custom 24 and se custom 24 and a hollowbody II. ive actually owned a horizon and didnt care for it. there great not my cup of tea a good guitar nonetheless. also ive owned les pauls which i have to say suck compared to horizons and prs guitars.
@prsplayer210 my bad directing my post to you. i was stoned (pot) and completely missed the "ampersand" prefacing the comment was for some one else. as they say in dumbshit land, i don't get out much.
the studio didn't sell at the local guitar store... which considering it was actually the best guitar in the store (way up in north ontario here), must be some kind of message maybe.
i started playing the PRS again. once i played more hours, going to keep her.
@igotwhips I didn't realize guitars named "studio" were so tightly regulated. From which chapter of the "Guitars with 'Studio' in their Name - Official Code Handbook" did you extract that bit of information?
I couldn't agree more, I never understood why Les Paul Studios sometimes have gold plated hardware.
I say get rid of the inlays altogether (side dots only), good quality tonewoods without the fancy finish of the top, cheapest solid colour paint job/lacquer or wax/shellac finish (whichever is cheapest) then spend the bulk of the cost on construction, hardware, set up and throw in a moulded case as well. Character over beauty is the way to go IMHO.
@igotwhips prs wants their guitars to be a work of art and fuck I would love to have a guitar that nice and versatile for stage use and not have it stuck for studio work only. its not like its the most expensive one they have, most are more money anyways haha. i always hated that les paul studios were used on stage so often, would hate for that image to happen to prs too.
@igotwhips thats not why its called the studio its because its diverse enough to use in a studio for all kinds of sounds i think because its not stripped down like a les paul studio. its just the name not a Mccarty studio
does anyone know if this is a ten top model?
