I doubt you will see it happening with many other MMOs, not many devs are foolhardy enough to bring MMOs out anymore (much less of them means the few that remain have a larger playerbase) and the free 2 play model has become more viable. Which is why Lord Of The Rings online is still up, incidentally.

We even tried to farm Widows Moor together back when we were lvl 41 and 42, it took us almost an hour to kill Gargoyle just once. couldn't they of ended better? have a few players get crushed, game over for them, find a way for a crowd to gather to see the bodies, have alot of crazy crap happen, get a mission to find out what is happening with a series of clues u have to find, get an early game over for not tryin, first person to find them all triggers some big boss fight which all players have to be involved in. when beaten, matrix is destroyed, everyone is free, resulting in a endgame cutscene, at end, a farewell to MO.

From what I've read, there is a fan based server in the works ala the pre NGE Star Wars Galaxies servers. Hopefully it will be up and running soon, as I always wanted to try MxO but could never find a copy of it to buy. Then I heard of how badly SOE treated the game (shades of SWG here...) and didn't bother. Shame because it looked like this game had a lot more potential in it.
it's sad to see a good MMO die. I wonder if people are trying to make their own master servers like what fans did for Aliens vs Predator 2. I hope one day someone decides to give a good try at a Matrix MMO. For now on R.I.P Matrix Online

I LOVED this game back when it came out. I got my Thanatas guy to level 50 and managed to just about get every rare item and level up every skill to max. I dont even remember the last event but I played with CoS (Chambers of Shaolin) ... I gave up and moved on to Css
It wasn't that MxO was a bad game, don't get me wrong it had it's share of issues, it's about SoE not caring the least bit for this game.
I think alot of gamers, myself included, stopped caring as well...if SoE would have just fixed the issues (quest bugs, ect.) more of us would have stayed on.
While it's true that the sales of MxO were low, when SoE got their hands on it (within months) this is where the downward sprial began.
The community dropped by 10,000 when SoE was put in charge, they did nothing to get them back. SoE kept using a 'buddy key' system instead of a simple free trial, people who wanted to play but couldn't get a key were denied access.
Would you run a low pop. MMO this way?

I hate to say it, but MxO was interesting on paper only. There was no content, no support, and most of all boring. It was half baked... well not even half I would say.

We can all just look at how Star Wars Galaxies turned out as a prime example as to why SoE SHOULD NOT bother with MMO's. Everything was fine in that game till the NGE stuff started happening.

You don't run an MMO by running it into the ground, upsetting the dedicated community to the point of leaving while not inviting in new blood until the last (two?) years by -finally- adding the free trial.
SoE wanted WB and DC Online, MxO was a small price to pay for that.

I played this game for a while and got to 50, but that was all the game could offer. It's sad to know it closed, it was such a fun game. Hopefully someone makes it again but does a better job that SOE.

Yeah everyone got crushed into a little ball, in game it is called meatwadding. It was the same way they ended beta so they thought it would be a fitting end to the game, not sure how many agree.
Near the end they started mucking around with the whether, making the sky red or making it snow (Stuff we have seen before). They also made us all lvl 100, so I had fun soloing the most difficult content dressed in pink, I fraps'd that too.
I played MxO from open beta until SOE took over. They ruined SWG for me and I KNEW they would screw MxO up. Instead of fixing what was wrong with the intelock system and a few other things, they chose the "revamp" the combat... the way they did SWG i guess.
Didn't expect this many comments, looks like people were interested in the end. This happened on the Syntax server for those who are asking. BigJimUK I do remember Jongen, I even recruited her to my faction, too bad she wasn't there to join us dancing for the end. MxO is gone for good but people are working on an emulator.
To explain why MxO failed in a nutshell, gross mismanagement on SOE's part. Reducing the dev team, making stupid design decisions and all around asshattery.
How did the end began? What happened? Was there anything unusual that happend that made you knew the end was near? How were the people reacting? The Sky and the buildings..

That wasn't the only issue.
The game had very low sales and was expensive to keep running, so it's not like they just didn't care.
You don't invest that much mone in a MMO then say "meh" and close it down.

SoE needed to open a free trial immedetally after server merge, raise the lvl cap to 60 and give players a reason to return. They did not do this.

We can all just look at how Star Wars Galaxies turned out as a prime example as to why SoE SHOULD NOT bother with MMO's. Everything was fine in that game till the NGE stuff started happening.

Anyways, i invite you to check out the MxO IGN Vault, the comment left by Lannen pretty much hit the nail on the head.
You don't run an MMO by running it into the ground, upsetting the dedicated community to the point of leaving while not inviting in new blood until the last (two?) years by -finally- adding the free trial.
SoE wanted WB and DC Online, MxO was a small price to pay for that.

I played this game for a while and got to 50, but that was all the game could offer. It's sad to know it closed, it was such a fun game. Hopefully someone makes it again but does a better job that SOE.

Yeah everyone got crushed into a little ball, in game it is called meatwadding. It was the same way they ended beta so they thought it would be a fitting end to the game, not sure how many agree.
Near the end they started mucking around with the whether, making the sky red or making it snow (Stuff we have seen before). They also made us all lvl 100, so I had fun soloing the most difficult content dressed in pink, I fraps'd that too.

I played MxO from open beta until SOE took over. They ruined SWG for me and I KNEW they would screw MxO up. Instead of fixing what was wrong with the intelock system and a few other things, they chose the "revamp" the combat... the way they did SWG i guess.

Didn't expect this many comments, looks like people were interested in the end. This happened on the Syntax server for those who are asking. BigJimUK I do remember Jongen, I even recruited her to my faction, too bad she wasn't there to join us dancing for the end. MxO is gone for good but people are working on an emulator.
To explain why MxO failed in a nutshell, gross mismanagement on SOE's part. Reducing the dev team, making stupid design decisions and all around asshattery.

I was Novunum on Recursion and Strijder on Syntax in this game (my sister was Jongen, if anyone remembers her). I loved it.
I would just like to cordially wish that the SOE executives responsible for starving MxO to death through blatant mismanagement, deliberate sabotage and wilful neglect be chronically afflicted with a hideous VD that not be diagnosed until their noses fall off and their gonads turn black. SOE didn't make MXO. Monlith Did. It was Monliths First MMO and last. SOE brought MXO why?... So they can get a contract with Warner Brothers So they can make there DC Universe game. Only reason.
