  • this wasnt just blacks rioting?the whites rioted aswell and came down to l8 to join in as it was about poverty unemployment and a lost generation rising upp?I WAS THERE

  • @fayge100

I was there too but behind the shields. It had nothing to do with poverty or unemployment. My dad was unemployed and skint but did he riot?, no, It was just an excuse to have a go at the police for disrupting mr. showers drug dealing. do you not realise you were used as mere soldiers by the drug dealers?

  • @toniandmike00 maybe from a black point of view it was about the drugs but from a white point it was aswell as unemployment and imght add excitement?we travelled in from netherley as did many white teenagers from outlying estates?

  • @fayge100 toni that was my area it wernt a black or white thing

it was a society who had been taken to the brim

the police were nasty twats proper it was a rebellion

we couldnt walk down the streets without gettin pulled white or black

something had to give lar n it did big time

  • @toniandmike00 ya wrong lar the police were bastards

micheal n delory n cocky had agendas but the riots were abar

police brutality lar plain n simple

  • Ta youtube for getting your act together...

get your face in the morning press

  • This is one of the best tunes ever. I remember Geoff Davis of Probe playing this in the shop all the time. I worked in HMV at the time but would always sneak off to Probe and Pnny Lane records because they would play these amazing tunes that defined the times. Da Books should have been huge. I am looking for the 12" version of Living for the City as well..so if you know...let me know.

  • @DrFrasier95

That original Probe records used to always have copies of the 12".

Though there should still be a few places in the city centre you'll find it.

Try 'Hairy Records' at the top of Bold St. or even Probe which is now situated on Slater St. just off Bold St. If you luck-out there, try the second-hand stores in the new Quiggins opposite Rapid.

    Anymore stuff to put up?

  • Alright sean!!

Seen you comment on the TV appearance stuff and knew that's who you where.

Yeah I do have one more idea in the pipeline, it's gonna be like a follow up to this, in the way of the b-side 'gone to black' which i'm sure you know is the themes instrumental version of piggie. When I can get some time i'll start putting it together and let you know when it's up.

  • @seanmoranallstar tell your Dad that me and my sister used to follow them where ever they were on, and that we loved cook da books xxx

  • @seanmoranallstar

    Hi sean,

many years ago I lived in Fazakerley and vaguely knew your dad, and his sadly deceased brother Joe who was for a time on Evertons books and I'd played footy with him on Hawksmoor park!

Also knew John Smith who I believe or was told that Cook da Books was "his band" ie the manager! 1st time I've ever heard their music , am now in australia!

  • are cook da books from liverpool, the stanley house line makes me think they are, this song is awesome

  • Yes they are from Liverpool.

They come from the suburb of Fazakerley.

The line "In the Echo they get it wrong"

'The Echo' is a local newspaper, and is not to be mistaken for maybe 'And The Bunnymen' in which 'Echo' was a drum machine they used to use before getting in a real drummer.

The word 'Eight' in the title is refering to the first part the postcode for Toxteth (L8)

Hope that makes sense of one or two things that may also have a few people thinking about.

  • cheers fella, this song is awesome, the stanley house line made my day, i played for stanley house for about 10 years, great memories

  • @rp61wasinnocentok Ace upload, thanks. What happened to the lads out of Cook Da Books, did they go on to be in other bands? I've seen there name in loads of books on Liverpool music history. Are Groundpig still going?
