how the hell can this thing increase fuel efficiency if all it does is rev the engine all the time...?
no sir i'm not buying that.. atleast with a diesel engine in city driving you will get better fuel mileage with a manual box for sure, that is if you know how to drive it properly... hell driving in 4th gear at 40mph my 2.0 vw tdi seems to be consuming less fuel than highway speeds in 6th gear
a CVT never revs the engine. It keeps the engine at it's most efficient RPM. So the RPM is constant through the speed variations. Unlike an automatic where the RPM is not constant through speed variations.
think of as doing 20=>60kph-ish and a nearly constant rev. below 1500 rpm, or a diesel-electric train accelerating....tht's the closet thing i could think of abt a CVT car
@vdub350 Yes you can driver one by just going to a dealer and pretend that you want to buy a car with CVT and they will give you a free test driver , and after that say ... oh i dont like it and go home. :-)
cvt today offer better mpg like stick shift but current cvt only able to handle up to 400nm of torque, if used on a engine with torque over 400nm and the belt will snap. as for down hill, both semi-auto and stick shift also did engine braking whenever accelerator is depressed. as for acceleration if the driver did powershifting on a stick(this make the car accelerate faster but will tear down entire transmission and clutch), it will eventually out accelerate cvt
@skorpiius Well the satisfying "VrooooooooooooooooooVROOOooooooooooooooooVROOOoooooooooo" depends on how much you want to service it and when it does need repair due to more wear on components, you end up going "Waaahh waaaaaahh waaaaaa" to the bank to take out a loan for repairs. Same goes for your brakes when you go through those. My brakes used to be changed every 4 months, now they are changed every 7 months. CVT is awesome!
They (Audi, Nissan, Subaru) use metal belt nowadays in order to handle more torque. The Altima V6 makes over 260 hp, and CVT handles it well. Regarding failure; you still need to replace the entire tranny.
Im no mechanic, but i dont think they cant make a belt strong enough to hold the power geared transmissions can, a preceived lack of power delivery, and a tendancy for failures to require a complete transmission replacement, rather than repair or rebuild.
Like the rotary, its a cool alternative system but its not without its problems.
If ever a CVT equipped formula 1 car wins convincingly (assuming it's only a matter of time when an entirely new gen CVT capable of handling large amounts of horsepower will be developed)... two things will happen. All this uproar about people not wanting to watch mono-tone racing will cease. Racing is about winning, so if beautiful sounding cars become losers... every F1 team will either go CVT or they will ban it. Same way the rotary engine was banned at LeMans.
IT SHOULD BE A LAW TO PRODUCE CARS QITH THIS... AND LESS TAXES FOR THOSE WHO OWN'EM

Buy a manual and be done with it.

A CVT according to test have a better MPG fuel than other gear.

The CVT cost a lot more in MPG fuel consumption... they don't tell that lol

That's true.

This kind of transmission is not new. I had a golf cart that had it, however, CVT is new to street cars

it'll run more like old racing games, with no gears

it never say rev the engine all the time
if the engine is torque-oriented, you can juz stick it to the rev where it can make use of the torque
revving a CVT car is a completely pointless thing to do

Agreed. That is exactly what the video displayed with all the examples.

@theseriousaccount, that's really weird. I wish I could drive a CVT to see what it feels like.

Nissan's cvt's are currently chains not belts.

But won't you lose the satisfying "VrooooooooooooooooooVROOOooooooooooooooooVROOOoooooooooo" when accelerating? it will just be a constant tone :)

DYNO323,
No. Engine speed doesn't kill an engine, changing engine speed does. So CVTs are easier on engines.

but what are the contras of it?

for 600+hp engines you only can trasmit with manual or semi-automatic.

hey isnt the cvt bad for the engine??
cause it keeps it reved so hard all the time

Quem freia assim na curva com cambio manual é manco.
Eu só reduzo as marchas.
elsioluiz 5 years ago
o comparativo é entre cvt e automático tradicional, de 4 ou 5 marchas
o excesso de frenagem é exagero talvez, mas é para comparar os dois câmbios
