  • very good--I thought the ending was a little harsh on some of the chords, though

  • New rising Vietnamese chess player = Le Quang Liem

  • Vietnamese people have a special martial art called "drunken fighting art ". It's the most wonderful art in the world. So is this performance.

In the rate of his young age, he can compare to Lipatti and Cortot.

  • vietnamese = one of the smartest races on earth

  • @carbon735 : be modest, boy.

  • @carbon735 last time i looked, vietnamese was an ethnicity and not a race, you mongoloid.

  • @carbon735 if u know about biology, that "mongoloid" must be changed to "indonesianoid". Go study more....

  • Adoro questo pianista e adoro ancor più Chopin.

  • I nearly cried when he played this piece at a recital in June 2010. Bravo!

  • those glasses have got to go.

  • I'm so proud to be asian because of him.

    BRAVO! Dang Thai Son!!

  • i don't know much about music, but, when i listen the Dang version, and compare with Zimmerman's , my heart and soul and ears are touched by Dang's

It's a pure feeling tt wasn't inluented by musician view

  • he played much better than zimmerman obviously

  • @rachmaninov1873 zimmerman won the 1975 chopin...

  • he plays really well and i love his emotion inserted in the piece but i cant stand the fact that he looks like a possessed zombie with that hairstyle , glasses and odd look.

  • Dang grew up in a poor family in war torn VIetnam when he had to practice on a piano that housed rats. It is through such experience Dang truly appreciates the intense emotion in music such as Chopin's.

  • at 5.32 the trill then turn zimmerman staccatos the turn and bass notes more in keeping with the piece, there are other small details which i cant go into on youtube due to lack of space which shows zimmerman to be ahead of dang albeit commendable pianist

  • the best version ever!!

  • nope zimmerman is better

  • Absolutely breathtaking...

There are many other great renditions of this piece but his is the only one that makes me cry while listening. I don't know why, but somehow it touches me deeply.

Maybe the judges at the 1980 competition felt the same way.

  • A very good performance. My favorite versions of this remains those by Jorge Bolet and Shura Cherkassky.

  • he is no doubt played more touching than zimermann......

  • the comments on here are by tone deaf people zimmerman is far more precise/delicate/chopinesque

  • My favourite reading of the Chopin "Barcarolle" is Argerich's. My only qualm is that she doesnt stay on the last chord long enough.

  • It is very good to listen his play with this music!

  • Woah! I Love Chopin!!!!!!

  • Woah!!! me too!

  • Excellent!!!

  • Great job Dang!!!

Bravo to you, your passion, and committment.

  • It is too calm....... not much excitement.

And when there is excitement is not enough.....

  • I love his interpretation, with so humility !

  • A very beautiful performance! His victory was not so undeserved, after all.

  • Cantabile!!!

  • He looks so funny at the beginning. The music is very mature and inspiring, but aspiring as well

  • For me, this is one of the best available on You Tube. Its songful and expressive - with just the right balance between the left hand accompaniment and right hand melody. While there is no debating taste, Dong Thai's interpretation flows beautifully and it never lacks heart or soul.

    Definitely gets my vote.

  • dang thai son is from my country beat that but oppisite side he is a awesome piano player it is the great.

  • Come on :)) Some of you guys dont know who Dang Thai Son is.

Well, he plays so badly that he won the Chopin concour, right ? :)) Your conclusion is so reasonable that I think my ass is off.

Bravo Dang Thai Son. His life from the very beginning till now is full of passion for music. Then you should know what he has been through before withdrawing any monumentally idiotic conclusion.

Fuck these who is biased toward Asian pianists.

  • Wow! Such a passionate young man! I very much like his genuine emotional expression. Thank you again for posting.

  • He was "a passionate young man" 28 yrs ago ^^. Now he is "a passionate middle-aged man" :p

  • simple as this if u dont like dont listen to post comments.

  • This guy can really sing. This is what the Barcarolle needs throughout. He really delivers. This is one of Chopin's most difficult pieces, interpretively. Would have liked a more veiled sound in the "improvisatory" section. The final "big chord" section seemed a bit fast for me, but that's a personal preference. Very nice playing.

  • Splendid!

  • Marcus Groh,Jorge Prats,Shimizu,Bounine,Samoshko,Kenner,Nohara,Yundi Li,Cocarelli,Fujiwara,Brigel,Siheng Song,Tamura,...Paris,Bruxelles,Varsovie mélangés.

  • Good, but not the best...

  • Here we have a typical example on YouTube. Anyone can make cheap comment even he doesn't have any idea he is talking about.

"not the best"? Do you know what you are talking about?! This Dang Thai Son walked away the gold medal from International Chopin Piano Competition in 1980. Do you know how many people could do that since teh First Competition in 1927?

    What a retarded!

  • nico: Sorry I didn't know you are a 16 year old! But 16 year-old is not an execuse to be an idiot!

Pay people respect. This Dang got the first price in Chopin Competition when he was 22. Think about what you can achieve when you get to 22, kiddo!

  • yes, and so did Bunin, so did Blechacz, so did Yundi Li (when he was 17!), so...

And another thing, I don't care about what judges of a competition think, in that competition Pogorelich was better than this guy in a lot of ways...he just didn't win because of political reasons...

For this barcarolle, if I were you, I'd listen to Rubinstein and Lipatti...maybe Neuhaus or Perahia...

  • You are absolutely right.. and there's nothing wrong with stating a preference.

  • They have a point in that he didn't give any reason for his opinion.

Personally, I agree with nico22059 because it just doesn't transcend the keyboard like what I get from Cortot's lyricism or Sofronitsky's dynamics. The other people shouldn't have taken it as an attack on DTS because usually, one performance (especially a LIVE one) does not make or break a pianist. Additionally it IS subjective to say 'this person is the "best"' or 'this person is more talented'.

    People need to READ.

  • "People need to READ."

They definitely need to listen more.

  • listen b....u are an idiot in listening and understanding in music

  • anyone stupid enough to consider dang thai son's playing as machine-like doesn't even deserve to make a single peep about any performances. period.

  • what's so special? this is precisely my point. if your ears are so deaf that you can't even comprehend the subtleties of this performance then you really should forget about ever 1. commenting critically on musical performances 2. expecting to ever understand or play music at a high level.

  • How ironic. The only retarded person here is you. You're putting words in my mouth. When did i ever say he plays better than Cortot? My main objection is that you call his playing mechanical or machine-like. The fact is, that is wrong, simply as that. I'll say it again, if you can't hear it, don't say anything.

Let me just put this out there: I don't slander people very often, but just to be as blunt as possible, you are stupid.

  • People don't have to be equal to Cortot or better than him to be considered special.

The fact that you believe i must love lang lang shows more about you and why you adamantly fail to hear what Dang Thai Son puts into this barcarolle.

You must simply have an attitude against Asian Pianists, which by the way I don't blame you for. Lang Lang, yundi li--many of them are god awful musicians.

This one on the other hand was russian trained, the very schooling i think you have a lot of respect for.

  • true about lang lang but Yundi Li is NOT god awful.. he is one of the best pianists today..

  • Most of what you say is very true, but PLEASE don't go down that schooling route. Great pianists come from everywhere and every tradition.

  • Yes, but the vast majority come from Russian schooling.

There's no denying, and it's not like i'm saying that Russians are somehow better pianists. It just so happens that the Russians acquired the knowledge of Liszt's schooling and reproduced it well to students.

Had it been the French, the result would've been the same. Had it been anyone, the result would've been the same.

    It's simply serendipitous.

  • @laqinz Dang was discovered by a Russian musician somewhere in 1977-1979 when he has been a established artist, and then taken to Soviet Union. Of course he did acquire some knowledge in Russia too (in this very short period, until 1980 when he won the prize).

  • great comment! thanks so much!!!!!!!

  • are u educated? I do not think u are. that is why u do not know how to realize how good DTS is.

  • This is my favorite performance of Chopin's Barcarolle so far. On this piece Dang Thai Son nails it better than even Pollini or Lipatti.

  • thanks you very much for the vid!

  • We-Vietnamese are so proud of him!
