Best thing to do first would be to get some worklife experience. A lot of fire fighters have a construction background ie, plumber, electrician, joiner etc. A lot are ex military as well. You DO NOT have to have a previous background in the fire service whether whole time or retained. No formal qualifications are required but there is and entrance exam, medical & physical. Find out if your local brigade has a fire cadets group. Good luck....
@youngbill69 hi, i am currently in the fire cadets at my local station and hoping to get into the retained as soon as possible, and see what happens from there, thanks very much for your help,
i got a question to all airport firefighter in the uk, i am 17 and i wanted to be a firefighter my whole life, i wanted to get into the retained at my local station, how easy is it to become a airport firefighter and do you need to be in the retained before you can join i was speaking to a station commander at the local airport and he said you do is this always the case? and what kinda of qualifications do you need, thanks,
@masrety, The airport Fire service did attend the terrorist attack but weren't called for 12 minutes. We arrived within 2 minutes and the fire was extinguished anpther 2 minutes aftet that. It was a shambles due to the management refusing to send us to building/car fires and medical calls to save money. Google "Glasgow Airport Firefighter Strike" for more info. Long story.
Surely there aren't that many fires at an airport? We would have heard about them on the news and stuff. Did the airport firemen go to the terrorist attacks at Glasgow?
will have......they attend all incidents on the airfield and to do with terminal buildings!...... We may not hear about them as airport firefighters often attend bird strikes or engine failure and such.... they are contained safely so we don't hear about them as not much happened.... it is not major news... I am at cardiff airport soon.....feel free to ask some more!
they work only on airport. If there is a plane crash, emergancy, fire or anything like that in the area of the airport they will go to it. Not being one myself thats all i can really tell you about it. Im sure your local airport FF station would be happy to answer more questions... that is if you can survive security nowadays.
you should do a real joke, like a wedgie.. tie someones pants in a rope when they go down the pole!
