One main reason Allied side win in the war..they were combine and join together and work together to defeat the German at world war 2 also Allied know that German also being threaten by the USSR...so the Allied were know that the german is in stress with all battle he facing off

1st : Dday

2nd : North African

3rd : Soviet in Russian Land

What this doco isnt telling you is how the Americans rejected these floating tanks thinking they were a stupid idea. They landed infantry alone and suffered immeasurable losses because of it. But hey at least they got to make a movie or two about it depicting the heroics of the soldiers as opposed to the sheer stupidity of their leaders.

@Antifaith29 What are you talking about? They used them at both Omaha and Utah. Omahas was a bit of a disaster due to too early deployment in very rough conditions so only a handful actually made it. Utah beach went way better and probably a large reason for it's relatively easy day compared to Omaha.

@Ghostkillmaster Many reasons, the quality of their machines is certainly NOT one of them though. All personal feelings aside , the germans had what was probably the finest fighting force i the world at the time, what they lacked were resorces , a compitent leader ( That is to say Hitler himself. His generals ranged from decent to brilliant ) and numbers. It took what was basicly the rest of the world to take germany down.

@Antifaith29 good points. either way, its more like they wasted resources. they had bomb proof bunkers, great tanks, leaders, etc. they even had rail guns. so yeah, you're probably right. thanks for that.

@Ghostkillmaster Because USSR caused more than 80% of Wehrmacht and Waffen SS casualties. USSR had been pushing from the east from the 1943->. I have really hard time believing D-Day was necessary in order to win the war, as USSR had many times bigger and faster production compared to Germany. How ever, D-Day was needed to stop Communism to border of West and East Germany.

@JohQx3 well, without D-Day, i make it hard to believe that the Russians would take care of the western front (eastern for US). but then again, they would conquer Germany. plus the captured Berlin. but anyway, the world is full of conspiracies, so yeah. good points

@sheemsheem Rommel had in Normandy the 12th SS Panzer Division, arguably the best division in the SS. Also with them was Michael Wittmann, the best tank commander ever. With that I don't agree with the under tone of you comment at all.

Hitler knew a landing was coming, he sent his best General, his best SS division & his best tank commander to fight the allies before the landings even happened. Once it did happen, Hitler sent his best troops to fight the best the allies had.

@drtankify Simply because the Germans, although having built fortifications, couldn't guess where the Allies would hit and land in Europe. The Germans were also greatly outnumbered until the Allies go inland.

@fallschirmjager0000 What you're saying might be true, but the reason that all the interviewees encounter Tigers Or Panthers is because of ratings. It's much more interesting to watch Sherman try to battle with a Tiger than a AFV.

@123Productionstreet true but then again most allied tankers were quite poor at identifying what exactly the type of German tank they were coming up against. The Panzer 4 with armoured skirts was commonly mistaken for a Tiger.

My Grandpa fought in the battle of Caen, in the 11th Armoured Division (Bristish), Driving a Sherman Firefly. He got ditched and taken out by what he believes to be either 1 of the 3 German weapons : A Panzerfaust, A Panther, A Pak40 Anti-tank gun.

2:27 That is the turret from the Landkrezuer P.1000 Ratte! Biggest tank ever designed (except P.1000 Monster) it was canceled and all they had built was the turret so they shipped it to Normandy. AND I FOUND IT RIGHT DAR.

They are not, The Ratte turret was one taking from a german cruiser, also Ratte turret was supposed to have dual guns, these turret carry a single gun and are of a smaller calibre.

Ratte turret was never placed in normandie.

The Germans lost because of not having tanks in reserve and no air support.Imagine if the Germans had the number of tanks used in the battle of Kursk....the Allies would have been thrown back into the sea!

DD means duplex drive or Donald duck tank what they used to call it.

This is where the Sherman tank trumps against any other German tanks,

they are very versatile and very reliable able to do many different task.

After the landings, what of the remaining DD amphibious tanks? Are they used again but this time on the fields or not anymore since they seem like best used only for shore assaults?

After the Normandy Landings, the Sherman DD's were Deployed for the Rhine crossing near Aken ( Aachen) to make a foothold on German Soil and to create a save Beach- Head for the Infantry.

No, they diden't. Nicknames of the Sherman DD was the '' Donald Duck'' becuase you're a sitting duck in a pond waiting to be shot. the DD is nothing more then a Sherman with a Big rubber swim belt around it.
