It was all in the smoke and I am sure the heat was so hot they knew it was coming. Safety lines are always the best bet. As far as training, there is no need to train to feel extreme heat. Not that hot. An experienced person should have been there to see what was happening. The guys seeemd fine. Thank God for that. Big lessons learned that day.
I'd like to say, this wasnt a training film. we watched this at my county Fire Training center because it was a real fire, and there were plenty of mistakes made, including the fan(positive pressure). We used this as a "what not to do"
Dang... Wow.. Im glad no one was hurt, but smoke tells all.. watch how the smoke gets really turbulent right before the bank drops down.. these guys are Lucky Lucky LUCKY...
There as so many mistakes in this video that the only blame would be the training program. Opposing hoselines gets alot of firefighters killed, along with no overall scene management even during training.
I don't believe this was a flashover. More of ignition of superheated gas commonly known and flame over or roll over and began venting from the front door. It was definitely caused by the idiot putting the PPV fan in the front door which introduced fresh air to the super heated gasses. As an assistant fire chief and private sector fire and explosion investigator I would definitely chalk this one up as a huge no no. I think unfortunately too many departments are trying to use the PPV attack an

Perfect example of a bunch of remedial firefighters avoiding vertical ventilation. In order for the PPV to operate correctly, I would first cut a hole on the pitched roof to allow the smoke, gases, and heat from the building to facilitate a visible working environment. By allowing the smoke, gases, and heat to exit through the ventilated area while the PPV Fan is in operation will drastically decrease if not eliminate the smoke from moving in the away from the opposing direction.
Eliminate the heavy smoke moving into the point of entry. There smoke, heat and gases will then move through the vertical ventilation hole on the roof through positive pressure.
@MTalley7474 - Your right. I dont know if it was laziness on the trainers part but unfourtunatly there are times where even out chiefs will not vertically ventilate, maybe because we are understaffed and dont want to stress the man power. But this should never ever happen in training.
While it is obvious that the introduction of the PPV into the structure resulted in the subsequent flashover, I also noted that at about 2:56 into the video, that the firefighter with the hoseline was able to cool the fire down in about 4-5 seconds and return it to a "pre-flashover" condition.
My point is.... a "coordinated" offensive attack should (whenever possible) be supported by a back-up line whose crew maintains an adequate seperation from the attack crew.
the fact the fire fighter you see after the flashover which is AIT automatic ignition temperature was reached at the door pulls out the hose line from the house..the firefighters life line and their way out lucky they didnt get fried. bloody americans and their early ventilation policies there are better methods now gas cooling as such and actually knowing how to read fire behaviour. Definately good training video. Watch and learn
yeah not all but all my training and the footage i've seen on roofs as such ripping sheets of iron of while theres a blazing firing if the house is that involved know 1 in the building why risk life and limb..let it burn that thats what insurance is for.. u can't replace a life.. definately great video for learning though 1 good thing out of it.
Actually we are supposed to vent a fire with in-conjuction of the attack line. Which wasn't done here I actually am against PPV ventilation while thier is still a fire in the structure unless it is absolutely needed. Open the roof and take the windows.
There are many issues here, but from a UK point of view, among many other errors, this video demonstrates perfectly why a charged covering jet is so vitally important, even in a training scenario.
Technically it is not a flashover, as the ignition takes place almost outside the structure. This was a fire gas auto-ignition as the fuel-rich superheated gases were vented outside by the fans. Had it been a flashover, the last guy that you see coming out would not have been walking around like you see him. As 200chief says, PPV MUST be requires extremely good coordination, and plenty of training - not something to try one day because you read about it somewhere. Good educational video!
Positive pressure attack gone wrong, horribly wrong...

They should do a bit more training on reading smoke. There are some excellent resources and courses out there.

PPV venting while the fire is still going is usally a west coast thing. Most eastern depts us natural or hydrolic vents.

This was definately a flashover. And the firefighters caused it with the introduction of the fan.

not a good idea to be puttin water on a fire from the outside while there are crews on the interior.

The problem appears to have been the result of introducing the high volume of fresh air (PPV) into the super heated / fuel rich environment.
Great teaching video!
A standard guideline for PPV is that it can only be employed when the interior team leader and the IC agree, and then only on the orders of the IC.
Stay safe.
