I would disagee. This giant monster here was probably the "blue whale" of the animal kingdom of The Mist. Cloverfield monster was much more aggressive. Perhaps more like a combat model. So two very different animals. Cloverfield also bothered to eat individual humans. This giant monster seems to care little. Humans are too insignificant. It's already king of the hill.

this was my favorite scene from the movie. the music and the way that it's shot so perfectly captures the enormity of their situation. i love the sound that it makes as well, reminds me of the half-life strider or war of the worlds tripod.

Yes, I like that its not just a special effects scene, it has real gravity that puts the viewer in the characters shoes with an overwhelming sense that in the transition from the claustrophobia of the supermarket they have only found themselves more isolated in an increasingly desolate and frightening netherworld. The massive scale of the creature serves to highlight the hopelessness of their plight. They are on a road to nowhere that they want to go and they know it.

Which was why I thought that the 'surprise' ending completely reversed the movie's tone up until then and was unnatural. How plausible is it that this mist which has extended so far and has unleashed such awesome creatures would just dissipate and be brought under control by flamethrowers and tanks? I mean come on.

I've never read the book, so I don't know how the original plot goes, but I think the filmmakers were just desperate to give the audience some closure so they wouldn't be left with a cliffhanger begging for a sequel to wrap things up. (I'd actually like to see a sequel with some big fight scenes between the military and the monsters!!)
