Actually it -was- the live action Dog featured for the animated series on WB. As far as i remember it went the same way as with Mr. T or Captain Planet.

Real World Actors gave a moral Lesson after every episode.

Why do you only classify this as "late 90s"? It says here that the show was "coming in four weeks", so obviously this is from 1997. Plus, I doubt they would've been using the live-action version of the dog in the promos after the show premiered.
