my dog just had both his back knees replaced. I was pissed when it was so damn expensive, but we now call him the "5 thousand dollar dog" He's a few months out from the surgeries (one happened while recovering from the other, he favored his "good" leg too much and blew out his acl) i got a "discount" the second time, i "saved" $1000 on the second surgery cause i had just been in there a few weeks ago. Hes up and running again, i just cant run him on sand or anything to be safe
Allie is so cute! I like her Nutnfancy! Send her down to me I'll take real good care of her. No mountains in Florida. She will have plenty of swamps to run through. She should rest a few months, seriously the worst thing is to keep pushing when your body demands recovery and there are signs of pain. IMHO
Lol I love Allie she seems like such a wonderful companion to have, but I've always wondered (with no offence to Allie) why Nutnfancy doesn't have an ACTUAL sheepdog? It would make sense if you ask me.
Poor Allie. I picked up a pound puppy recently. He ended up having Parvo, costing $1800.00 to get back to health. These are the financial risks of having any pet.
I know she will get the best care from such good owners. My dog has just had a major operation here in the UK too. Its interesting to see that the bond between people and there pets and even veterinary practices are much the same on both sides of the Atlantic. She will be ok and back to business as usual before you know it. Much love to Allie.
Hey nutn i was wondering how old is allie the mountaindog? Also do you give her milk to drink often? I think milk is good for dogs because it builds strong bones and cartilage, it might help her heal faster? I dunno though im no expert, just a suggestion, I give my dog milk all the time and he luvs it.
Hey nutn' my girlfriend is a service dog trainer and they put all of them on fish oil and glucosimine to help this type of stuff! And they start with dogs that are 9-18 month old. They do that because the dogs carry weight and possibly have to do brace and balance for someone that lost a leg or something. It might help Allie to get better or live a longer life. Its worth the extra effort to keep them heathy longer. Labs are awesome dogs trust me I've seen it but the have joint problems!
i spend alot of time around animals. im sure your vet would say if dogness was underweight or something. but im also curious if you have her on a high activity diet or something else. function determines diet and that hiking is high intensity stuff
much love and hope for allie! i remember her from early videos how much she enjoyed the outdoors i hope she can regain her ability to do all those things with you. thinking of her and hoping she will get better soon! i will pray for her!
when your dog gets hurt it's like one of your kids getting hurt. I lost two dogs this year from old age and broke down and cried so I know what you are going threw.
the more you push the dog the worse the injury gets. that dog will go until it can't with out question. I hope common sense will tell you not to push her.......good luck

tearing up over here. Allie reminds me of my black lab i had when i was 5 years old until i was 17. I would have done anything for my dog. I'm sure you feel the same way. I hope it all turns out well.
My dog needed the same thang when she was 5 and it worked out for the best. She lived till 17 almost 18. It hard to see them in pain. I feel for you and your family. For the expense do it you won't regret it. Take care.
watching this video - - it is clear to me that you love Allie very much. Kudos to all animals lovers and double kudos to Vets. Their patients can't talk and tell, but they cat bite. Still they serve. Best wishes
@counkev Nutn didn't plan on turning this into a video...he just filmed it in case he wanted to remind himself of the details later on. Since then, we've been asked about Allie so much since Nutn tweeted about her that he decided to use the footage in a video. -- Veri
@ironlungdtoker What the fuck is your problem you jack ass. It was a simple question. I just wanted to know. Because I asked I now know he wasn't planning on turning this into a video. And plus I don't have a twitter so I didn't even know about Allie back then.
I'm not trained or an expert or anything, but I wonder if her wearing booties makes her gait change to something uncomfortable for prolonged periods. Have you noticed if the recovery periods occur with or without boots? Just a thought.
I have heard it said that veterinarians need to be "people" oriented. Reason being: "people" pay the pet bills - the pets don't. Mountain Dog Allie has the best "people" as her owners and adventure lovers. Here's wishing the best for her.
my dog had the same problem but we couldn't afford to fix it. we just had to exercise her less and she was already quite old so the vet recommended not to get surgery .

Allie, what else can you say except what an awesome dog she is! I hope she gets better soon so she can rejoin the adventure with all of us here in TNP!! Good luck!
So sad to hear Allie has problems!! :-( I just love seeing her in your vid's Nutn!!! But hey, there is hope, you know what the problem is and the vet's can fix it!! I know it is very expensive, we paid over 2.500€ more then 15 years ago, just to take a small piece of soft tissue away ( came loose from the bone) My Berner, Ruby has some problems now too in her R front pols, if she does a long walk :-( i hope she will be alright just as for Allie!!! I do everything for my best friend!
@mindblown76. Weight probably had little effect. CCL issues are one of the most common dog ortho issuses. Being overweight would be a factor but IMHO not carrying occasional weight especially for a fit dog.
Sorry to hear that Nutnfancy. We're going through the same deal with our 8 yr old black lab. She ruptured her cruciate lig. chasing a bunny. We're almost a month out from surgery and she's doing very well. Best thing we did for her was buying a memory foam bed and setting a foldable pen around her bed. Gives her much more room than her crate. The hardest part is keeping her quiet. She thinks she's good to go already! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Buddy I feel you. I have two great danes, and I run them hard and often. They have hip and joint issues. I hope all goes well. I am a pretty poor musician, but I will donate what I can when I can. I believe you would do the same if I needed it.
Get well soon Allie! Glad you are able to get her issue corrected. I wass kind of concerned that you were just going to wrap her knee/hip/leg with 550 paracord and see if she heals :-)
I feel like Allie is part of the family as we have all watched her grow up here on TNP. We wish her all the best and will have her in our prayers. Hopefully she'll be able to hit the trail again soon.
No doubt others have said these things, but perhaps (1) her backpack-carrying days or should be over for now? and (2) hikes in the winter snow not so good?
I've walked dogs for 5 years and am happy to see she doesnt have hip dysplasia. I still walk a now 15 year old husky and hip dysplasia is one of the most crippling for an active dog and owner. Hope she does better,
That sucks man! My wife and I have an almost 2 year old boxer/pit and we just found out that she has a tore ACL on the left knee and a sprained ACL on the right. The vet told us that it will heal in (up to) 6 months on it's own, or get surgery then still have months of healing before she's all better. Good luck Nutn.
I remember back to your "AK vs AR vids" where she showed up behind the table in the middle of your comparisons, begging you for a run. Practically breaks my heart to see her like this. How old is she? 8 years?
I agree that it is possible to get a new dog, but the love and companionship from a current friend is great enough that some of us are willing to put the money out there to help them feel better when they are sick or injured, and that is what nutnfancy is doing. I would do it too, you cant have too many good friends in this world and helping them to recover is something that is important as well, even if they walk on four legs.
sucks that you broke your dog. i recently lost mine...she wasnt tactical black like yours, she was more like a dark earth (brown) with patches of army digital (brindle). hope everything works out...it sucks to lose your buddy.
I lost a Springer to kidney/liver failure about 7 years ago. Blew through about the same amount to save him and I'd have doubled it. Allie and my Spencer are the reasons we humans have pets. We know she is in the best of hands. She will be back on the trail before you know it.
i've been thinking about this video for roughly 24 hours and i still dont know if i'd spend all that money on my dog..... my wife is from a 3rd world country, and i still remember telling her parents about our $900 surgery for a cat.... ugh
Watching you for this many years makes me feel like Allies' a member of the family. I wish you both the best. If she requires an expensive surgery, you should call upon the TNP family. With how much you've given I have a feeling they'll respond generously to help you out.
It put a smile on my face when I noticed how Allie always matches in her gear. But it saddens me to hear all this, I hope you can get it all worked out and I wish Allie the best of luck.
@prosig556 my uncle has had to put down about 4 hunting dogs in his life, he's hunted ducks since he was 18 and it killed him to put his best friends down...
...I know your not asking for money, but Allie is part of TNP, heck I've bought lots of stuff for my dogs that you have reviewd. if you can set up a Pay-Pal account or any other way I can help you with her bills drop me a line and I will gladly donate to her vet bills and recovery.
... $2600 and a year later she's got a bit of a gimp but she is back to normal, and as she gets older Rymadil will be needed for her knee joint. It's different for my wife and I as we don't have children, instead our dogs and cats are our family and I don't regret spending the money on her as she gives us so much enjoyment in our lives.
I have a Chocolate Lab that at the age of 3 was fooling around the beach while we were on vacation and she tore her meniscus in her knee. Went through the same procesure as you Nutn' 3 different vets and they all said the same thing. "Oh she's young enough for it to not bother her too much". Well 2 years later on the same beach on vacation she tore it again, this time badly. Continued.....
Nutn it looks like a right cranial cruciate rupture or partial tear, based on her gate on some of the clips in this vid, they should be able to get tibial thrust or drawer with Palpation under anesthesia or heavy sedation. The procedure they recommended is called a tplo and is the preferred method for cruciate repair in dogs over 40lbs. Regardless of what surgery she has or doesn't have she NEEDS to be on chondroprotectives to slow thre progression of arthritis I prefer the hills j/d diet adequ
I'm very sorry about your dog, Allie. A similar problem happened with my Lab and she had to have alot of surgery. My dog was born with bad hips and we run her alot and she loves to run a lot so she damaged it more. I know the pain of having problems like this. My dog had to go through 3 surgeries. I am very willing to pay a dollar towards her getting better!
You remind me of Tom Hanks. Like in Saving Private Ryan. cool.

She's a great dog.
No doubt others have said these things, but perhaps (1) her backpack-carrying days or should be over for now? and (2) hikes in the winter snow not so good?
Best of luck for Allie.

8 years?

@nunvikingsofthesea

Nutin,
I lost a Springer to kidney/liver failure about 7 years ago. Blew through about the same amount to save him and I'd have doubled it. Allie and my Spencer are the reasons we humans have pets. We know she is in the best of hands. She will be back on the trail before you know it.
Best of luck

i've been thinking about this video for roughly 24 hours and i still dont know if i'd spend all that money on my dog..... my wife is from a 3rd world country, and i still remember telling her parents about our $900 surgery for a cat.... ugh

I hope all your viewers can give at least 1 dollar, I know I have a dollar for Allie.

Watching you for this many years makes me feel like Allies' a member of the family. I wish you both the best. If she requires an expensive surgery, you should call upon the TNP family. With how much you've given I have a feeling they'll respond generously to help you out.
