  • I find the VM sounds a little thin and tinny compared to the growl of the 800. The 800 just sounds more "real" to my ears. Even the high notes through the 800 still sound fat while singing (if that even makes any sense). The VM would probably sound better to me if there wasn't an 800 in the room to compare it to. Good comparison video!

  • Hey NICE, GEnious IDEA and NICE playing, I have a question for all the marshall and amp heads out tehre..........I have a marshall MG sweries 30dfx amp but I want to hoook it to a cabinet instead of buying a cabinet and and head, I want to use my amp as the head...IF ANYONE OUT THERE KNOWS THE SOLUTION, BDEES23@LIVE.COM IS MY EMAIL

  • im assuming your a slash fan

  • VM sounds like dog poop. Which is why Everybody uses/used the JCM800/JMP/JTM and Nobody uses the VM Marshalls (on records or in studios). Too much treble!!! Crank the mids fuck the kids!! Leave the treble to wanky drummers who want to hit cymbals all the time ^^

  • VM all the way. btw, I hope the hum was nothing serious.

  • Sounds like the VM would sit much better in a real 'mix' while the 800 sounds better in person... but im guessing the recording makes the both sound like ass...

  • Lift the ground on one of the amps to get rid of the hum when using an A/B box.

  • @jimi71 how do you do that?

  • @keaulana1 Get one of those little grey things you put on the end of the power cord for one of your amps. Converts it from a three prong outlet to a two prong. Available at hardware stores. The other amp will provide your ground for both amps. Worked for me.

  • MASTER VOLUME AT 8?!?!?!? i have my roland cube 80xl on 1.5 and its loud wthhhhell/? nice vid though.

  • Your playing is more inspired with the 800. Both sound great...just different.

  • The 2210 is a 100 watter and will have more low end.

  • I prefere the JCM 800 low dark tone....

  • That lead bend from the VM at 2:48 was the only thing I like liked about the VM.

  • Jcm

  • this guy is rich xd

  • What cabinet are you plugged into?

  • jcm800...simple as that..

  • can't decide... both are really good. :-)

  • @hevechvy ok, jcm 800

  • come on no one with the VM?

  • The VM sounded scratchier. The 800 clearer, authoritative, just as crunchy though. Going back and forth I began to hear the VM sounding like a weak knock-off of the 800. I wonder what the condition of the tubes were in both amps. Damn! I just played a VM in Guitar Center for over an hour and was gonna go back tomorrow and buy it. They have an 800 there too for another $200 - I think I'll try that when I go back.

  • Sooooo......do you like Marshall's? : )

  • This is a great demo. Not slamming this video or anything but I think it is a bit unfair tone-wise. I mean, the JCM has 4 power tubes and the VM in the video (2266) only has 2 power tubes. Doesn't that make a sound difference?

  • the vintage modern. jcm sounds too hair metalish to me. maybe its how you have them eq'ed

  • JCM 800 wins on tone by a mile

  • JCM 800 has way more dynamics and less fizz. The winner is clear to me.

  • Some EQ'ing could get the VM to sound closer the JCM. The VM is brighter, maybe roll off the prescence and a little treble and boost the bass a little.

  • Comment removed

  • i cant decide to my ears the vm has a more focused tone where as the jcm has a more rounded tone and its a little more bass in it then the vm

  • I like both amps. I do alot of classic rock stuff but also some newer stuff. I had a 800 years ago & sold it . I have a VM now & I love the tone. I can get excellent 60s , 70s tones & also the flexability to play some of the harder rock. I am more than happy with the versatility of the VM. No regrets with this amp. There will always be those that prefer the older amps ,but for me , my 2466 sounds every bit as good as my 800 sounded.

  • I think this guy likes Marshalls

  • i played the VM 10 days ago with my guitar in a shop and it blew me away.. what amp would you recommend for GnR and other Hard Rockin 80s stuff??? VM or JCM800 ( im not a fan of online youtube videos cause they all sound nothing like the amp when its in front of me and hits me in my face! the VM sounded fuckin awesome, but i never played a jcm 800 )

  • @Diehardslashfan Vintage Modern beats the hell out of a JCM800. And this is coming from the owner of a JCM800.

  • 800 by a landslide

  • man im so jealous of your amps! :( really good playing, hearing you playing through that jcm 800 is awesome

  • does anyone know how much the jcm 800 2205 2210 cost back in the 80s ?

  • Speaker for JCM and VM please ?

  • VM sounds harsh, trebbly and metallic.... The JCM800 is singing and smooth as silk... hands up for it!

  • @naxguitar LOL, it's not the same speaker dude.

  • I like the VM more in general--crunchier, livelier, more dynamic--but for leads I think I'd prefer the smoothness of the JCM800. You're quite a player, by the way.

  • thanks for posting this! I really like the vintage modern on other demos and this lest me see how it stacks up against a known amp... Nice playing too :) ohhh yeah to answer the question, I'm surprised to say I prefer the Vintage Modern....

  • Comment removed

  • The JCM 800 2210 Rules. The VM sounds like a JCM 800 2203/2204, buzzy and too much mid range.

  • JCM 800 is the best rock amp.

  • VM winns!! :D I like the fat sound of the 800 but I´m old school so the VM winns ^^

  • i demand a rig rundown!

  • damn, the jcm 800 just raped the VM

  • are you using pedals in the jcm 800?

  • I love several of the VM vids on this site, the tone seems amazing, but this comparison video makes it sound too bright and 'scratchy'. Maybe if the body and detail settings were brought down a bit it would sound better, but the 800 takes it. Much, much fatter and classier tone. The part with the Ozzy riff makes the VM sound like a toy.

  • The JCM 800 is a great amp, but I favor the Vintage Modern as it has a more complex sound and has a slightly brighter character. The guitar is a midrange instrument and once the VM is used in a context of a band, it shines brightly. It seems that some players want an amp to have so much bass that there is a point where you compete with the bass player. That equals mud for me. Obviously, when an amp is played alone in a bedroom it can sound thin, but cranked up to concert levels = FAT!

  • I got both and prefer the VM for overall sound, the jcm has such a superb creamy compressed tone which is user friendly for lead, however in a band,if you listen, the VM cuts through better due to it being more articulate, you can hear pick attack, dynamics are more evident etc and with a clean boost, this amp goues nuts too!!Both brilliant amps and DIFFERENT!

  • VM sounds like plastic ... 800 rules!

  • im sure the answer is no, but can these tones be had at apartment volumes?

  • @showsjohn

    buy an attenuator and yes

  • vinatge modern sounds too thin

  • I prefer the VM

  • The vintage modern seemed to have more harmonic content and be more open. When he switches from the 800, its like a blanket is lifted off the tone. 800s are pretty hit or miss I always felt because its got diode clipping. The VM just has an extra tube stage for its high gain. You can definitely hear the difference.

  • I do believe that that's a Master Lead 30 combo on the right there :P a rare find with some serious volume for a 30 watter, and a pretty damn good tone to it too ;)

I too have the privilege of owning one :P It's what I use for band practises :D

  • The JCM 800 definitely takes it hear but a cab makes all the difference for a VM. Ive played one and they are nothing short of amazing sounding

  • JCM 800 takes it. But what 1960 cabs were you using. vin 30's or greenbacks, or g12t-75's. They will all make a big difference in the sound of a head. I am buying a JCM 800 now. Fuck the JMD:1 I was looking at. You have some good talent. Keep it up. I liked your vid. But the humm has got to go. Either the a/b/y box or your homes gounding. Get back to me on what cab you were using please. Thanks T_REX

  • This cab and the VM aren't a good match, but great tones on the 800!

  • In this video I def gotta go with the thicker tone of the JCM 800, but idk I think it doesn't totally give the VM due credit because of it's abilities to hit so many types of tones. Idk - I'm still torn! Great vid tho. You must go deaf in that small room.

  • In this video I def gotta go with the thicker tone of the JCM 800, but idk I think it doesn't totally give the VM due credit because of it's abilities to hit so many types of tones. Idk - I'm still torn! Great vid tho. You must go def in that small room.

  • jcm 800 all the way!!!!

  • do you like marshall amps?

  • Both amps sound great

  • JCM 800 !!!

  • JCM 800 all the way. No doubts, regrets and the rest.

  • Mate I'd check the mains power of the place you're in, that's some SERIOUS hum you got going on there, and the fact that it's on both worries me!

Just make sure you're not running the risk of damaging your amps, tube amps are sensitive about what you're pumping into them!

  • @AdamDallas Just the hum of the AB Box mate I would be worried if my amps were humming like that all the time as well :L

  • @sparklijelibean Oh my bad, that's not so bad then ;) Have you checked the grounding inside the A/B box? Great tones btw, definitely think the JCM wins!

  • Definitely prefer the JCM800.. however I agree with the comment re the settings on the VM. On the whole the JCM800 just seems to have the better combination of tone/ crunch/ vol/ and reverb, without the ever-so-slightly "processed" sound of the VM. Still... a REALLY nice job by Marshall on both amps. BTW.. some very hot playing also. Thanks much for the vid.

  • I like the 800 alot sounds very bright and very smooth

  • If you want old school Metal... JCM 800 is right for you! If you want a nice Rock N Roll tone... Vintage is right for you! If you want high gain amp....With many tone selections.... ( Go from a Clean Tone, TO a Blues tone, To a Rock tone, To a High Gain Metal tone ) A Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier may be right for you!

  • Hey, thanks for doing this vid. I'm considering trading my Mesa Dual Rectifier for a Vintage Modern. I like the sound, nice playing too.

  • The VM is just brighter that is it.

  • I have to say the VM. I have the 100 watt 2466 and i run it through a 1960av cab.

  • First of all, the Marshall Vintage Modern is not suposed to play heavy metal. Is more like a rock and roll amp. Second the eq that you are using on the Vintage modern is ridiculous. On other side the best matching cabinet for the VM is the 425 with celestions Greenbacks.

  • hey man... can you play both at the same time? to get a biger tone maybe??

  • seriously dude where the hell do ya get ya cash from for all ya gear @ 15 yrs old?

  • the VM has much more midle tone i think... but the jcm is roaring :)

  • Yeah a Marshall fanboy! Keep it up dude.

  • What cabinet have you used?

  • The 800 wins in my humble opinion

  • i prefer the JCM800.

  • Master Volume 8 ????? Are you serious???

  • The vintage modern seems very fuzzy to me compared to the JCM800. The JCM800 seems much more natural sounding.

  • VM has more bite an snarl to it. i like it more

  • what cab on the VM ?

what cab on the JCM800 ?

    thanks and great job

  • prefer the vintage, really good playing. for rythm just roll of the tone a bit on the guitar if you think it's too thin. gotta work with the guitar to use the VM

  • Comment removed

  • The problem with the JCM is that it's not vintage nor modern.

    Besides, screwed Slash's tone.

  • Top job!!!!!!! Awesome improv. Mine goes to the Vintage modern as it sounds ballsier.

  • im about to buy one of these 2 but whats better for slash riffs and soli? what do you think. the intro of welcome to the jungle sounds so bad with vox!

  • I have had both of these amps and they are both amazing. The vinatge modern is more dynamic and can get a lot of sick tones. The800 is great for straight up rock n roll like gnr, van halen, zz top.

  • are you kiddin? JCM800 by far

  • The VM sounds more responsive and dynamic. I love my VM it sounds much better to me though, through the 1960b 300watt straight cab then it does through the vintage modern slant and 1960a slant cabs.

  • marshall ftw!

  • i like the vm more.. more presence. only the ballooooon riff sounded better on the 800. but if you want that sound just dial back on the detail.vm is more versatile

  • hey man what song is that at 1:40?

  • @sgplayer1022 Hey man Its just a riff I came up with on the spot :)

  • that 800 sound is just class mate

  • Don't blame you for not selling! I've got a '73 1x12 JCM 800 combo and STILL use that MORE than my 1/2 stack! lol ... BTW... JCM 800 FOR SURE!!!

  • most dislike these later channel switching 800s, the two input hole 800s are the sought after ,better sounding in my opinion. The vm sounded nice hear thoiugh and possibly better in this clip at least

  • Nice playing, I like the 800 even though it is not the 2203. . they all sound good to me (800's).

  • VM all the way

  • Thanx for the comparison mate, I don't think we'll ever get the next version of the jcm800. Jim Marshall really nailled it right from the start since the first design taken from the bassman pre-amp. I also think by them mounting the tubes directly on the circuit board, fucks up the signal.

  • vintage modern with a eq pedal would sound identical to the jcm800. actually i think if you just backed off the body knob and turned up the mid knob a little it would sound about the same.

  • both amps are great but i prefer the vm.

    which box did you use?

  • Wow this JCM sounds better than the VM here. I won't go into details. It just does.

Myself I prefer a plexi or a mid 70s master volume head.

I've had them all even the anniversary head. I've had bad JCM 800s and better ones all at once.

  • The JCM800 ROCKS !!!!!!

  • this is the clipping diode JCM800 amp right? It is not the 'classic' jcm800 we all know and love aka as 2203 or 2204 right?

  • JCM 800 all the way.

  • JCM 800

  • I prefer JCM 800

So I think that 1960 Vintage 30 or green back speakes are better.

    :-))

  • DSL 100!

  • I love the sound of the JCM 800. So many rock albums were defined by that amp in the 80s and after. It has a rawness to it that no other amp (even from Marshall) can touch). I think the closest tonally was the JCM 900 but that was the next amp they made so that would explain that one. The VM is aimed at the market place of guitarists that want warm plexi tones with the modern additions Marshall have made over the years to add to the versatility of the amp. Personally ill stick with the JCM :D

  • both can sound much better with mids up. JCM800 sounds the same as the VM, you have to pull back the treble on the VM (has more to boot) and up the mids to 10.

And remember: JCM800 cost more, have no effect loop, is less reliable and is not versatile like the VM

  • Vintage Modern!!!

  • Um Can you do the JCM brighter like the Modern Vintage but still have that powerful feeling?

  • In this vid the 800 is a winner for me.

But I like the VM in real life really much.

You can't tell it from this video man.

  • JCM. The VM is very sensitive to tweaking though, so that could be the problem here. In which case I might change my mind.

  • ey man, great demo..but if i get the jcm 800 2205, will it be loud? cause..the 100 watt is stupidly loud (as you said in your review =P ) so will the 50 watt do clubs for live? and...give a good sound on a low volume setting?

  • Hey I was wondering, that Vintage amp is is capable of make like plexi sounds and more old school rock sounds like AC/DC and Aerosmith and such?

  • AHhh the vintage modern is just jizzable, im gettin one ;)

  • i have the 2466, and love it, it,s sooohh! organic and alive, its the most tonefull marshall ive ever played, but hey all marshalls are awsome as far as i am con conserned, i bought mine because ive been in constant search of hendrix,s tone the lord of the strings, u know!!,, both are great!! but VM is a bit more tonefull! thanks!

  • @stratcat70

mate, i agree totally, i got a VM 2466 last week, with the cab made for it, and it sounds orgasmic lol

  • Theres clearly a diference between the 2! I love the JCM800 rythm tone but the VM Kicked ass on the lead one!

But I believe this was actually about the amp settings! I guess with a good setting either one or the other can do the job.

My choice? The VM cause I can't get a JCM new and I won't pay such a bunch of money to get a thing used!

  • Well. It's a very fair comparison in terms of settings. However, every Marshall after the 2204 is pretty bright. The sweep of the presence knob on newer Marshalls is very extreme. I have a TSL and you can sweep almost all those highs out of a newer Marshall by lowering the presence. The VM does sound shrill in this clip

  • ATTITUDE!! yeah duff rocks

  • Is that a 100wt VM or a 50?

  • A few comments had it correct. The JCM800 channel switchers used solid state diode clipping for distortion, and the Vintage Modern uses an extra preamp valve for added gain.

  • The 800 for sure for rhythms but the Modern hands down for the leads played at 2:49

  • Holy crap!!

    U Marshall whore!

  • jcm 800 sounds meatier

  • The 800 sounds fuller in this demo. . but the amps might be dialed in to match each other better? I have read that this model of the 800 uses a diode to help push the distortion channel the same as the Jubilee and the JCM 900s? The 2203 800 (If I have the model correct) uses only the tubes for distortion. The 2203 does not drive as hard but has the sound and is great when pushed with a pedal.

  • Wooh! Gnr poster in the background ^^

JCM800 for me though, just has that badass classic rock sound

  • VM sounds better in my opinion.. but more of that punch in the face rock kind of tone (which I like)

The JCM 800 sounds better for heavier music but I just love the tone out of the fucking VM so much ha

  • VM is way more verstatile. You can control the tone WAY more than the 800. It also has a more raunchy in your face sound, to me the 800 sounds to smooth and doesn't cut through much. The gain is on VM is great because each note is still heard with clarity. Btw, Slash use both of theses amps, he uses the VM combined with his 2555SL for his studio and live sound.

  • jcm all the way way more balls i personally own both these amps aswell

  • An original old amp will of course sound better than a new model trying to sound like the old thing. Pretty logic to me

  • Nice rig! I cant decide witch one that sounds better.

  • the jmc 800 is definetly the better amp. It's the best Marshall amp ever ( In my opinion)!!

  • I do like the 800 better but they're so hard to find so i've never actually played one. The VM is a killer amp in it's own name, I've played one and it was great for rock stuff.

  • I preferred the JCM 800. Which model and year is that and any chance you are interested in selling it? Also what speakers are you running them through and was the VM dialled in to replicate a JCM?

    Thanks, Jonny.

  • Hey mate this is the 2210 dual channel 800 ummm it was a original one back in the day not sure what date though i will look it up ut na sorry dude i have thaught about selling it but i couldnt live with myself if i did I would regret it more than anything and i cant put myself through that sorry bud its a great amp just look around they are around its just finding them !!!

  • I think that the VM sounds more Van Halen and the JCM sounds more Slash.

  • slash recorded one of the velvet revolver albums with a vintage modern

  • @Luckums135 Eddie never used KT66 tubes and thats whats in the VM. The tube type is what gives the type of characteristic tone to it. Listen to Eddie at the US Festival 1983, he's running JCM 800s and plexis and you can hear the EL34 crunch.

  • If I had to pick, I'd definitely go with the VintageMODERN. Definitely the VM. As for the EL34 vs. KT66, as a grad electronic engineer I must tell you that the tubes in the output (final) stage have the least influence on sound (either linear or nonlinear distortion), if they are designed correctly. And I think Marshall wouldn't botch that. So, the difference in sound comes from the preamplification, mostly.

  • Cheers dude, you really know what you are talking about, stay in touch as I am always up for learning anything I can! Cheers :) David

  • Thanks. Every amp manufacturer's requirement for the final stage is absolute linearity in the transfer characteristic. Some go so far to achieve this, that they have a class-A final stage, which consumes at least 75% of the power for bias. The output stage of any power amp is actually a servant, it is not permitted any "creativity" - it must amplify the signal as-is. The distortion that a final stage would add is extremely ugly. Just FYI :)

  • Wow man this is awesome. You should apply for a job with Marshall!! Marshall deffo don't botch anything, everything top class. Cheers for sharing your knowlege and stay in touch. So much genius in that black box! Plug it in and im in rock heaven ha ha!! :)

  • @r5cpt

Thats why the Valve State amps are epic fails, because they don't have the one thing that makes the tube amp sound... Power Amp Distortion. You must be somebody who doesn't push their amp very hard, so at low volume it is all pre amp tone for you congratuFUCKINGlations.

  • @r5cpt, the power section of a guitar amp is probably the MOST important part of a GUITAR amps sound. Guitar amps are turned up to extreme volumes (10!) to push the tubes well past their clipping point which is when they start to sound good. EL34s lose their lows but get real creamy when driven. KT66s hold their lows much better. The difference between the two is as noticable as night and day.

  • @r5cpt unless youre cranking it...? power tube distortion sounds better to me. :)

  • @r5cpt Then why do people make big deals out of the power stage tubes? Different tubes have different tonal characteristics though, right?

  • @theShowStopper321 But the biggest difference in tone doesnt come from the power tubes (el34 KT66) the pre-amp makes the biggest difference so tubes are not the reason but by experience i guess the KT66 are a bit louder and ruffer but you cant tell that much

  • @r5cpt as a guitarist, there are huge differences (tone wise) between kt66's and el34's. the power amp and pre amp both affect sound not just pre amp. plus power amp distortion sounds much better than pre amp distortion IMHO

  • jcm 800- the big dady

  • I like the 800 for big sounding, smooth rhythms. The VM cuts through nice on leads but sounds like an overgrown fuzz box on rhythm stuff.

  • Vintage modern is far to shrill and fuzzy when I played one so its a jcm 800 for me.

  • hey, where did u get the 5010 combo? because i really want one but i cant seem to find one

  • Hey mate I was given it sorry they are rare i think though cheers for watching !!!

  • @sparklijelibean ok man, no problem, has i think the jcm 800 has the edge, such an amazing amp. :)

  • VM is better there's KT66s in the power section JCM 800 comes with EL34s good tube but has some fuzzy mids

  • Fair enough man I know what you mean the KT66 is a great tube but the EL34s give a better saturated Metal sound whereas the VM is great for my hardrock like ACDC and Zepplin that sort of stuff both amazing amps

  • vintage modern for me man, im into hard rock, not metal

  • dude man i've played this head before u can get a really badass metal sound if u turn up the body and turnon the mid boost

  • yes you can get a killer metalsound on this amp. I use emg pickups and the sound i amazing. This amp i also amazing when i plug in my strat ;P
