As long as an artist writes something that epic, the music "style" will never matter if ur a friend of music. As to why Anathema changed from "doom metal", or w/e u call Serenades, then i guess they thought that more ppl can understand soft core than metal.U can write a song in many ways and it will still have the same basic meaning.Same way u can express anger through tears or sadness through rage. Anathemas music has always been TRUE.Respect.
Stare czasy, taka Anathema zapamietalem a teraz jak chce odświeżyć relacje z kapelami z przeszlosci to za glowę sie chwytam... Gdzie ten stary klimat ? :-(
HELP!Can anyone HELP ME? Im looking for an Old Anathema song-a "Ballade"(acustic..?)-Its a WOMAN Who sings the most Beautiful "serenadic" intro/verse in it-and its almost an opera-with heavy metal afterwards.. ist amasing-special and fantastic! But- its a song who is about 20 yrs. old..
@MightySolo I can only think of three old Anathema songs with female vocals: Everwake, J'ai Fait Une Promesse and Alone. However, since you mentioned "metal afterwards", I'll stretch it a bit and ask you to look after Paradise Lost's Christendom. Hope it helps :)
@FanisBarf TNX A LOT! Cuz-It was Everwake!!-But I've also heard Paradise Lost-and I really like the song :"christendom" too! Tnx's to u' I can play that song again also! ;) You really helped me a lot! Im so glad you took the time to answer me! (Thumbs up!!)
@MightySolo Perhaps you are looking for the "J'ai Fait une Promesse" song, which is the third on Serenades album, right the next track after this epic "Sweet Tears". It's one one my all times favs ballads also
I enjoy the new stuff and the old stuff, but there's something about the old Anathema they'll never achieve with the new style. Songs like this one go right through my spine, up and down, tearing me apart and then putting it all back together every time. In a few days I'll see them live, and I can only hope to see them singing some old songs!
@SHIMMYshookmybone Totally agree with you on that one. It's not only Anathema, look at Tiamat or Sentenced - all started with a really raw style, more or less close to old school death metal, then refined to become what they are now (or "were").
@SHIMMYshookmybone Thanks for the Haken hint, I must admit it was the first time they got to my ears. Excellent stuff! You got me, I enjoy a lot of stuff from ambient/electro/synth to black metal, I can't stand most Linkin Park-kind of shit, and grindcore and other really extreme genres aren't actually something to sit back and listen to for me.
In exchange for your Haken hint, here's mine - Winds (try looking for Reflections of the I on YouTube).
@juddweiss I forgive you for listening to their new shit. It's a shame they moved from this exciting doom metal, becoming more popular to the mainstream generation, like yourself. So please do not over speculate the greatness of the old anathema.
Man, is this were bad, Anathema never would be considered so important as today. "Serenades" is and always will be a classic in the metal scene. We who grow up listening to this music will always preffer this sound, than the shitty "Sigur Ros wanna be" sound that they have now. Maybe you are to hypster to understand.
Master of Puppets is classic metal. Low by Testament is a classic metal album. Corrosion of Conformity have some classic metal. Early Anathema is junk. Go look up the lyrics for Sweet Tears. It's more sappy than any new stuff. Just sung stupidly. Guitar is repetitive, boring. Nothing original or impressive with the song writing or the musicianship, or even the attitude. This is music for the brain dead. So I'm glad that Anathema has moved on to become so phenomenal and original
This proves that you´re really a hypster...those albums you mention are mainstream metal clasic albums. Anathema was an underground band, and Serenades is a classic, you can{t deny it. Even bands like Cradle of Filth (when they were good) made covers of song of this album (sleepless)...so don´t try to teach us who is good or bad...the only fact is your ignorance.
This song makes me travell in time back in the 90's when i was at high school and this cd was released and it was so great to listen these dark and sorrowfull doom songs through the cold winter evenings...
One of the most intense songs in history. Brutal, melodic, sad. A masterpiece! I like new Anathema, too, however. Still waiting for a new record. It's been five years, guys... Ok, there were some records recycling old songs and two or three new songs, but an all-new record would be cool. It's about time!
i maybe listen to nightwish but it is nothing in compare to anathema. nightwish is just another commercial band. anathema is quality in my opinion but not nightwish... its kind of childish.

I didn't know this was a gay forum?! Look at this guys speaking of metal as they know something :-)))) Yeah, Meshuggah will not save your sorry ass from listening to Nightwish when you are alone and sad in the dark hahahaha
the one thing that i always thought made Anathema standout from the peaceville trinity was the basslines, so eerie and empty, but memorable and catchy at the same time
Paradise Lost ruled, not rules. They ruled. And yes, those two records are pish. And yes, they're OK these days, but a shade of the fucking juggernaut they once were.
Shades of god all the way, one of the best metal albums penned. The newer stuff sounds cheap in comparison. Not like they care though, they're fucking HUGE these days.
Listen to: One Second, Host, Believe in Nothing. There's more over-production on those three records than in the whole of the Linkin Park/Papa Roach back catalogue put together. New stuff is, indeed, not too bad, but more reminiscent of Nightwish than the Peaceville dirge/Music for Nations epic depression.
Well, when Paradise Lost still were a metal band it could be argued...
That Depeche Mode thing was pretty gash. I like Depeche Mode a lot, but not so much that one of my favourite bands of all time decided to rip them off to oblivion and back.
@funeralcoachdriver I hate when people stop liking bands because they get less heavy over time. Why can't metal fans appreciate beautiful music? All you fucks wanna do is bang your heads.
Say what you will, but I think that ALL of their albums are masterpieces. And even though they stopped playing doom metal, they certainly kept the 'doom' vibe in the music they are making now. I'm not sure this is true for the new album , though, as I've heard some samples of the songs from it and was quite dissapointed...
