Obama primary proposal for a US energy policy equates to socialism (think shortages and poor quality). If he is elected he will cause a true energy crisis. He doesn't understand a market based economy. McCain wants to remove the barriers to energy diversity (nuclear, solar, synthetics etc...) and let the best technologies win while not killing our economy by restricting us to dependence on unstable supply chains.
Obama has been very tepid on the issue of nuclear power. It is a very misunderstood energy source. It is the only way the country can effectively supply baseload electricity, desalinate sea water, and sustain a hydrogen economy. Wind and solar will never be able to supply the amount of energy to do those things. I have a feeling that it is because the environmental groups that support Obama own many of the companies that produce wind turbines and solar panels.
Nuclear power's just not worth it. Just trying to store that stuff is a disaster waiting to happen. One mistake can turn cities into toxic dead zones for hundreds of years. Read up on all the problems that France has storing their nuclear waste. You never heard about COGEMA pumping their nuclear waste right into the ocean. We're better off using clean coal technology. I don't think there is such a thing, but it's better than nuclear. There's also a new kind of solar technology.
woohoo 1-2 million barrels produced a day after lifting the ban out of the 100 million we may need by then. energy crisis averted. phew.most analysts do not agree that drilling is in our best interest. another crappy plan that most informed people dont agree with. Mccain suported the gas tax holiday how can you trust this man.
The only reason Bush and his Daddy and McCain are interested in keeping this country dependent on oil is because they stand to lose all of the money that they would otherwise gain if the U.S. became energy independent. Bush gave Big companies big tax breaks and then allowed them to outsource outside of the U.S. which went against the reason why they got the tax breaks in the first place, to create more jobs in the U.S. and to strengthen the economy. They Suck.
Solar and wind are fine, but impractical for transportation needs. What we really need to be doing is investing in algae biofuel. It's basically oil, except that it's carbon-neutral and can be grown, thus inexhaustable.
well i agree with u on the biofuel we also need to revoke the subsidies that are given to big farm companies to produce ethanol which is quite stupid. but what if we used the energy from the wind and solar to do electrolysis to make hydrogen which is easily transported.
McCain is also pushing new alternative energy technologies forward. But just in case they don't work in 7 years at least we'll have something to fall back on.
7 years???? We would have had it by now if it wasn't for people like Obama voting againts drilling!!!! I can not beleive these people are smart enough to breathe on there own...
Someone isn't aware that oil companies have nearly 10,000 drilling permits that they are intentionally not using. They have plenty of land to drill on, but they're CHOOSING not to.
Instead of throwing around insults while keeping yourself willfully ignorant, why don't you think about what exactly it means when oil companies are asking for land when they're ignoring the land they already have.
Soooo, Mccain's idea is bad because we won't get oil for 7 years (which is not true by the way), but Obama's plan is better even though it doesn't get us oil EVER?!?!?!?!
and if you don't like this plan, tune in next week for obama's new plan - and don't worry, if u don't like that one, he'll have an even newer plan the next week.
It's time to start investing more in solar and wind energy, these are cleaner energy sources and more readily available. Now click on "ramotringo" and enjoy enlightening Obama videos
Yeah man, we should invest on alternative energy because with the tons of perfectly good oil beneath our feet (which we spend over 10 million gallons of oil a day) is perfectly logic.
Will those alternative energy sources fix the energy problem in less than seven years? Are we gonna build thousands of windmills before then? If I want to save money at the pump, should I strap a windmill to the top of my car? Is that the idea?
bull shit all the good oil is in either the middle east, which is why that fucknut bush started the war anyway, to get more money or him. The other good oil is in alaska and russia, and the U.S. with john McCain as leader will probably ruin Alaska's landscape for that oil, while obama sees that there are other ways for fuel that our country wont regret.
douker: don't you want to stop Global Warming. Global Warming is caused by burning fossil fuels such as oil into the atmosphere!! We need to change asap. The polar caps ARE melting which will cause more rainfall more flooding etc, etc!!
There is nothing perfectly good about oil. We can no longer afford continue to flood the atmosphere with co2 produced by the use of fossil fuels. A dramatic effort is required to develop new forms of energy. Furthermore, we need to cut the purse strings of the oil tyrants.
Yeah, lets keep burning dead dinosaurs instead of trying to harness some other form of RENEWABLE energy?? What about when the oil runs out!! WHAT THEN!
What about the other tens of millions of acre's the oil companies have leased but are NOT drilling? Total hypocrites, the republican party has led us down the wrong path for too long. The Republican party doesn't even stand for "conserving" anymore.
Why invest so much money into drilling for oil?..When you can invest and build on Solar/Wind that develops energy INDEFINITELY, and creates millions of jobs for upkeep. unlike oil, where once it is driller/consumed, it's gone.
Is this issue about providing cheap oil to Americans? If so, then why are Obama's only ideas aimed at requiring higher fuel efficiencies and reducing emissions? THE POOR will be most dramatically hurt by such a plan because they are unable to afford new, more efficient vehicles and because Obama completely ignores anything that would actually reduce the price of gas. Drilling won't help for 7 years? That's what he said seven years ago, too.
And when it comes to alternative fuel vehicles, we have all the technologies available; vehicles that run with water, vegetable oil, even urine....etc.......But the you can guess why this alternative fuel cars are not produced long time ago. The answer is clear.
The price of gas has no effect even if we start drilling four or eight years from now. Look, the gas price could have been as low as it it had been. The problem is that the big oil companies and corporate lobbyists are and lawyers are controlling the price of oil and on top of that OPEC is NOT willing to drill more oil to keep up with the demand and all these factors drive the price of oil.
I see this "Big Oil" bla bla all the time. I'm guessing you have no insight into the energy industry or more particular the production of petroleum. Obama is calling for Windfall profits tax to take money from the companies that they've made. While at the same time asking them to invest more in renewable sources. These companies spend more money on research and developement then entire countries and they only make a 7-8% profit on their money. Less then the average business in the U.S.A.
Drill here, drill now. And build nuclear power plants. And fast-track the auto industry. HHO is good. No E85, the nation is not buying into that mess. And forget about tax breaks, they never get us anywhere.
Ohhh, he sounds so good, I want to believe...sorry...I don't. Pap for the masses and it seems many are buying it. There are going to be a lot of disappointed and disillusioned people in 2009/10/11/12 but, I forgot. It's GWB's fault.
I work for a major oil company, so let me explain how this process works. Imagine we find enough oil in Alaska to last the entire world 50 years.
First off, it would take us roughly 10 years to actually get to the oil. Secondly, Exxon Mobile, Shell, ect..don't care about what country they sell to, so they would be selling that oil to the entire world. What does this mean for you? Well..you would see a marginal decrease in gas prices, because we wouldn't be hording all the oil just for ourselves
Here's a lesson on how oil is actually distributed. Let's pretend we drill Alaska, and when i say "we" it's actually Exxon Mobbile, or Shell..and as we all know they are a corporate monster with no allegiance to any country.
So, we drill Alaska and there's enough oil there to last us 150 years, so what happens? Do we keep the oil for ourselves, NO. The oil companies sell it to the entire world...and we see a marginal decrease (probably less than a dollar a gallon....
Wow, what the hell is this? It doesn't solve anything! This is a supply issue not a demand issue. Mark my words gas prices will bury the democratic party! You havn't done anything about oil supply in this country for over a decade. This will kill you all, mark my words. Nacy P. Said she'll lower gas prices yet they have gone up faster under Dem controled Sen and house. Congressional approval ratting lower than Bush's! Yeah you guys are doing a bang up job!
HELLO??...Honda has a car that runs on water!!!....Honda Clarity....why are we still searching for fuel? the Tesla eletric car 0-60mph in 4 sec? 200+ miles per charge about a penny per mile....oil is outdated...stop the greed and FREE the people.
too much money out there for governments and oil companys at the moment. most oil companys buy up all the inventions witch cut out fuel and store them away. eventually oil will get phased out but it will take around 5-10 years.
Btw love that tesla my dad was thinking about buying one of those badboys. only downside to it is the batteries it uses arent that efficient quite yet. hopefully with more developments the tesla or a variation of it will be able to travel further on one charge.
7 years to get oil out of the ground from new oil fields. I don't believe that for a second. But even if it is true, we had better get started now because imagine what the price of gas will be in 7 years!!
7 years is about right for the locations under consideration. It's not as easy as sticking a pipe in the ground, particularly for remote and sea-based oil fields. There are extensive (and expensive) field surveys; "developing" the fields and wells - the oil is at times difficult to extract requiring additional processes; design, build deployment and site assembly of rig equipment; infrastructure to get the oil efficiently to market; etc. It's billions of dollars and millions of manhours.
The price of gas is determined not by the amount (supply) that is currently on hand, it is determined by current demand and the projected amount of oil in the future. Any drilling that ocurrs now, regardless of the actual amount immediately produced, will lower the price of gas.
obama understands that we would need nuclear energy but before building up nuclear reactors we need to make sure that we have land space available to dispose of the life threatening waste chemicals safely and efficiently other than mountain yuka...john mccain is just pandering to built about 30 nuclear reactors without having any plan to dispose the waste chemicals...i think i cleared up misconception a bit that u have....
you are most welcome for any more questions about barack obama policies.
the only problem with nuclear energy is putting the toxic waste somewhere. The French send theirs to Africa... I guess more and more republicans want us to be like the French...
Well, Africa needs money and we need a place to deposit waste. Seems like a good match to me.
That being said, Nuclear may help ease the burden a bit, but it's not a panacea. The bottom line that no one wants to talk about is that we all need to change our lifestyles to consume less energy and less resources. PERIOD. It's really just that simple. USE LESS SHIT.
It can take 10 years just to build and bring a new nuclear plant on line and they use a tremendous amount of energy in the process of building the plant, thus requiring years of production before the energy to build it is offset pushing the first day of useful production even further out.
Nuclear energy not a good idea. The next resource shortage we are beginning to see is water. Nuclear reactors take a lot of water in the cooling process. The states around the Great Lakes are already passing interstate legislation to protect the water because shortages could launch skirmishes here. Georgia is already looking for ways to cut Florida and Alabama from their supply. Solar and wind are clean and renewable with no radioactive waste.
Actually, if we drill more oil now it would produce oil in 2 years not 7. The problem is that we will continue to need gasoline for Obama's entire term of office (even if it is 8 years) and yes, I drive a Honda Civic Hybrid but it still needs gas. Obama can fast track whatever he wants but unless we increase supply, the price of gas will continue. Oh yeah, I forgot the main point was that Bush and McCain are both "evil." As such, we clearly should elect someone with no plan.
Energy and the Enviroment are two of Obama's strongest points. He needs to promote his plan as much as possible.
The Oil and Gas industry are all over the tv and radio trying to trick people into supporting the positions of McCain. They want more and Mccain will give it to them.
We got to hit them back hard with the truth! These Neocons are constantly putting out lies and the mainstream media regurgitates it ad nausea to us! Great response Obama... I am going to donate 10 bucks right now just to let u know i approve this message! LOL!
"He's gonna care alot about this stuff, and look for better options, punish SUV's, and you'll get 1000 dollars out of nowhere!"
I disagree. He didn't say anything except he wants to help, which is great but... everyone wants to do that. I want to know if hes going to resort to nuclear power (the only REAL option).
I didn't realize Obama was a genius engineer who knew how to raise fuel efficiency and create alternate energy (maybe like all that money he's helped waste on ethanol, which takes more energy to create than it produces). Big oil is 2% of the global market, they pay more in taxes (41%) than the entirety of the bottom 50% of individual income earners in the US, and Congress won't let them drill nor refine ... so they're forced into getting it from dictators overseas. Obama's solution: tax them
What does this do to solve our energy dependence issue?? NOTHING!!! where does the 1,000 comes from...from taxpayers?? oil companies??? if its taken from oil companies prices at the pump will rise...alternative energy is great but how long before its perfected and the infrastrucutre is built so it can be delivered to the consumer?...probably longer than it will take to drill and get more oil...oil is still necessary... Obama's plan doesnt increase the supply 1 bit...this is really a weak ad
right now for oil there is still more supply than demand, its the percieved future lack of supply that is why gas prices are so high i.e. the speculators. The prospect of viable alternatives, e.g. hydrogen/electric vehicles will cause oil prices to fall in the short term and in the long term will bring us to clean energy.
You know you people said this 30 years ago when alternative energy was first perposed. If we had just ignored you then we would have the infrastrucutre we needed now. Now your saying the same shit 30 years later. It will still take 10 years before we see a drop of that new oil McCain wants to drill for. How long do you people want to put this shit off. Do we have to be on the brink of economic collapse before you people wake up? The sooner we start obamas plan the sooner we get off of oil.
"10 years?" That's just ignorant right there. Maybe you're thinking of Natural gas or something. Oil can be transported following completion of a well. Sometimes frac completion isn't even neccessary. Well drilling time is dependant on the underlying strata, size and depth. Realistically, oil can get from production to consumer in under six months. These huge 5+ year numbers you're getting off the television are just garbage.
ive looked a lot into this issue. even the mccain camp says it wont add a drop of oil to the world market until 2013. and thats the most conservative estimate ive seen. most say an impact on the world market wont be made until at least 2017 and it will lower gas prices between 40 cents and 1.40 per barrel. that translates to 2-4 cents a gallon
Also your right we will still need oil. No one says we dont. But if we start using alternative the need for it will go down alot. We wont be so reliant on oil.
The only problem here is the "1000 dollar tax cut to help families". How is that breaking the grip of oil dependence now? Instead of a general 1000 dollar tax cut, how about a government subsidy on alternative energy, hmmmm? How about making the purchase of solar panels or for home use be tax deductible, or tax deductible with an additional subsidy? Now THAT would be one hell of a selling point!
It's disappointing to see the media praise McCain for supposedly "breaking" from the GOP on energy. The facts show, however, that Obama is the candidate who has actual concrete plans; McCain is the one with the empty rhetoric.
Keep in mind that raising mileage standards affects cars not yet made, not the roughly 250 million cars currently on American roads. How long do you think it will take to implement that?
I believe Obama can find a way to balance the 10 trillion dollar deficit, though McCain wants more war, where is the money going to come from if we are bankrupt? OBAMA 08'
How come no is asking where the money for $1000 middle class tax cut will come from or for that matter how not producing our own oil will reduce our dependence on foreign oil?
I am all for raising mileage standards, that is good. I am all for going with renewable technologies. I am also for increasing our domestic production and refining capacity. Also, the statement about no oil for 7 years is BS, the actual time it would take is far less. Also, why no talk about nuclear?
he should havementioned how hes going to block the loopholes that allow speculators to artifically jack up the price of oil. That will really help bring the price of oil down.
Also you gotta love how they used the awkward mccain bush hug!
A politician is a politician. A politician can, and will say anything to keep his job as a politician. But unlike McCain, Obama is new blood, McCain has been in politics long enough to become manipulated by it. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Vote for new blood. Vote Obama.
I can't believe the American people elected a former oil company CEO to office. It almost seems as if the oil companies snuck Bush into office in order to raise thier profits. Time to give the government back to the people. Obama 08!
I am so sick of seeing McCain ads on TV with his stupid "domestic drilling" stance... yeah, let's do further damage to our environment so you can stay in bed with Big Oil. Good one, John. Same ol' same OIL for the Republicans, of course. I hope this one gets some airtime in St. Louis.
mccain has already put up energy ads in wisconsin and i have had to explain to all my friends whyobama is the better choice and finally i will have a ad to do it for me
Good ad but not enough information. The problem is that most people want offshore drilling, but most important is that this ad doesn't mention 150 billion for 10 years on alternatives... it is still not clear... people want specifics...
Right on. John mcCain would not help America one bit. We need new energy, new ideas. Plug-in electric cars are the answer, and power them by wind electricity.
Obama said his energy plain would take 10 years. Why not produce oil 3 years before that time? How often has Obama voted with Bush?

Shamgar1776 3 years ago
imagine if everyone stopped driving everywhere and we developed alternative energies
tnichols321 3 years ago
7 years is about right for the locations under consideration. It's not as easy as sticking a pipe in the ground, particularly for remote and sea-based oil fields. There are extensive (and expensive) field surveys; "developing" the fields and wells - the oil is at times difficult to extract requiring additional processes; design, build deployment and site assembly of rig equipment; infrastructure to get the oil efficiently to market; etc. It's billions of dollars and millions of manhours.
mightym1 3 years ago
The price of gas is determined not by the amount (supply) that is currently on hand, it is determined by current demand and the projected amount of oil in the future. Any drilling that ocurrs now, regardless of the actual amount immediately produced, will lower the price of gas.

Why dont we just use nuclear energy? Lets think for once democrats!
thebigjonson 3 years ago
obama understands that we would need nuclear energy but before building up nuclear reactors we need to make sure that we have land space available to dispose of the life threatening waste chemicals safely and efficiently other than mountain yuka...john mccain is just pandering to built about 30 nuclear reactors without having any plan to dispose the waste chemicals...i think i cleared up misconception a bit that u have....
you are most welcome for any more questions about barack obama policies.
harshdral 3 years ago 6
the only problem with nuclear energy is putting the toxic waste somewhere. The French send theirs to Africa... I guess more and more republicans want us to be like the French...
lewghost 3 years ago 2
France does not send their waste to Africa, they store it in nuclear storage facilities. Please get your facts straight before you comment.
mfhettig 3 years ago 2
Well, Africa needs money and we need a place to deposit waste. Seems like a good match to me.
That being said, Nuclear may help ease the burden a bit, but it's not a panacea. The bottom line that no one wants to talk about is that we all need to change our lifestyles to consume less energy and less resources. PERIOD. It's really just that simple. USE LESS SHIT.
elperropatron 3 years ago
lol. and they say they hate the French.
bassman5588 3 years ago
It can take 10 years just to build and bring a new nuclear plant on line and they use a tremendous amount of energy in the process of building the plant, thus requiring years of production before the energy to build it is offset pushing the first day of useful production even further out.
18oroldermyass 3 years ago
Nuclear energy not a good idea. The next resource shortage we are beginning to see is water. Nuclear reactors take a lot of water in the cooling process. The states around the Great Lakes are already passing interstate legislation to protect the water because shortages could launch skirmishes here. Georgia is already looking for ways to cut Florida and Alabama from their supply. Solar and wind are clean and renewable with no radioactive waste.
fastcats3 3 years ago
The French and other nations use sodium for their cooling of reactors. They still use water though for the generation through steam turbines.

Thank you Obama for pointing out that offshore drilling will not solve America's energy woes.
Higher standards, more efficiency, and new technology will.

I disagree. He didn't say anything except he wants to help, which is great but... everyone wants to do that. I want to know if hes going to resort to nuclear power (the only REAL option).
mrzl13 3 years ago
I didn't realize Obama was a genius engineer who knew how to raise fuel efficiency and create alternate energy (maybe like all that money he's helped waste on ethanol, which takes more energy to create than it produces). Big oil is 2% of the global market, they pay more in taxes (41%) than the entirety of the bottom 50% of individual income earners in the US, and Congress won't let them drill nor refine ... so they're forced into getting it from dictators overseas. Obama's solution: tax them
MatchesMalone242 3 years ago
What does this do to solve our energy dependence issue?? NOTHING!!! where does the 1,000 comes from...from taxpayers?? oil companies??? if its taken from oil companies prices at the pump will rise...alternative energy is great but how long before its perfected and the infrastrucutre is built so it can be delivered to the consumer?...probably longer than it will take to drill and get more oil...oil is still necessary... Obama's plan doesnt increase the supply 1 bit...this is really a weak ad
mcsully1975 3 years ago
right now for oil there is still more supply than demand, its the percieved future lack of supply that is why gas prices are so high i.e. the speculators. The prospect of viable alternatives, e.g. hydrogen/electric vehicles will cause oil prices to fall in the short term and in the long term will bring us to clean energy.
Ashwento 3 years ago
You know you people said this 30 years ago when alternative energy was first perposed. If we had just ignored you then we would have the infrastrucutre we needed now. Now your saying the same shit 30 years later. It will still take 10 years before we see a drop of that new oil McCain wants to drill for. How long do you people want to put this shit off. Do we have to be on the brink of economic collapse before you people wake up? The sooner we start obamas plan the sooner we get off of oil.
warcraft1920 3 years ago
"10 years?" That's just ignorant right there. Maybe you're thinking of Natural gas or something. Oil can be transported following completion of a well. Sometimes frac completion isn't even neccessary. Well drilling time is dependant on the underlying strata, size and depth. Realistically, oil can get from production to consumer in under six months. These huge 5+ year numbers you're getting off the television are just garbage.
kamamootra 3 years ago
ive looked a lot into this issue. even the mccain camp says it wont add a drop of oil to the world market until 2013. and thats the most conservative estimate ive seen. most say an impact on the world market wont be made until at least 2017 and it will lower gas prices between 40 cents and 1.40 per barrel. that translates to 2-4 cents a gallon
agh668 3 years ago
Also your right we will still need oil. No one says we dont. But if we start using alternative the need for it will go down alot. We wont be so reliant on oil.
warcraft1920 3 years ago 3

The only problem here is the "1000 dollar tax cut to help families". How is that breaking the grip of oil dependence now? Instead of a general 1000 dollar tax cut, how about a government subsidy on alternative energy, hmmmm? How about making the purchase of solar panels or for home use be tax deductible, or tax deductible with an additional subsidy? Now THAT would be one hell of a selling point!

lilgame28 3 years ago
How come no is asking where the money for $1000 middle class tax cut will come from or for that matter how not producing our own oil will reduce our dependence on foreign oil?
I am all for raising mileage standards, that is good. I am all for going with renewable technologies. I am also for increasing our domestic production and refining capacity. Also, the statement about no oil for 7 years is BS, the actual time it would take is far less. Also, why no talk about nuclear?

Actually McCain voted 95% of the time with Bush in 2007.
So far in 2008, he's voted with Bush 100% of the time. Not 95, not 96, not 97, not 98, not 99. He voted with Bush 100% of the time.
McCain agrees with Bush more than Dick Chaney agrees with Bush. It's scary.
It's also funny that he thinks he has a chance in hell of winning. lol
