  • I just noticed how at every interview he always crosses his leg like that :) x

  • oh yeah! he was the teacher in the faculty HAHA

  • Elijah is correct you can in fact have conversations in both Quenya and Sindarin, they are real viable languages. He is also correct about the fact that Aragorn and Arwen are speaking Quenya.

  • They are real, viable languages, but you can't have a real conversation because the corpus isn't extensive enough. Also, he's not correct there, Aragorn and Arwen are speaking Sindarin. There is very little Quenya in the movie - two examples of it are Aragorn's song at his coronation, and Elijah holding up his light in Shelob's lair.

  • ooops sorry you're right, that's Sindarin my mistake.

However he is right about the fact that you can (sort of) have a conversation (at least a simple one) in Quenya, believe me it's been tried. The corpus of attested words for Quenya is 200. hey, people manage to have convos in Sindarin which only has 150 attested words. You just have to think creatively.

  • always and forever~ elijah wood!

  • Oh my gosh, I love that site! :D Go A&F!!!

  • Well yeah, strictly technically you could, you're right, and I shouldn't have said 'can't.' I just mean that the corpus doesn't allow much room to improvise or change the subject, so "conversation" would be so limited as to lack much in the way of spontaneity. But hey, maybe elves mostly like to talk about stars and leaves and beauty and the Valar and don't have much need for random chat :-)

  • he's so cute, and funny, and sweet and hotttt i loveee himm

  • elijah rocks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What is Quenya (sp?)? What were all those language thingies he was listing off? And also, lol, if he knew all that stuff about LOTR, then why was he so surprised that Elvish was a real language. You'd think he'd know that too.

  • Quenya is the first sort of 'branch' of the elvish language that Tolken made.

  • Quenya 1 of the 2 forms of elvish. The vowel placement of Quenya is different from Sindarin. They are both speakable translatable languages that Tolkien created. As to your second question, I have no idea, but I have people surprised when I say that though... let me know if that made sense...

  • He explained in the interview that he actually knows nothing about LOTR. It was Colbert who wrote up those questions for him. (Quenya is an Elvish language, Sindarin another one.)

  • for sure, stephen has his nerd credentials in order ;)
